August 14 - Michael Harris II closed out a nine-run fourth inning Wednesday night by hitting a grand slam for the visiting Atlanta Braves, who stunned the New York Mets in a 11-6 win in the middle game of a three-game series. The Braves, who trailed 6-0 after two innings before mounting their biggest comeback of the season, have won five of seven. The Mets fell to 2-9 this month. Pete Alonso's two-run single in the first put the Mets ahead before Carlos Carrasco could record an out. Cedric Mullins added a sacrifice fly later in the inning. New York scored three more times in the second, as Juan Soto hitting a two-run homer to center and Jeff McNeil added a two-out run-scoring double. But Mets starter David Peterson couldn't get out of the fourth, when he allowed six of the seven batters he faced to reach base. Nick Allen drew a bases-loaded walk and Jurickson Profar laced a three-run double before Matt Olson chased Peterson by working another walk. Reed Garrett (3-5) gave up Marcell Ozuna's run-scoring single and struck out Ozzie Albies before walking Sean Murphy. Harris followed with his second career grand slam. Ozuna added insurance with a two-run shot off Paul Blackburn in the sixth inning. Aaron Bummer (2-2) gave up two hits over 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Braves, who earned their first win after trailing by at least six runs since Apr. 6, 2024, when Atlanta beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-8 after trailing 6-0 in the first. Profar finished 3-for-5. Alonso was 3-for-4, while Francisco Lindor, Starling Marte and Brett Baty had two hits apiece. Carrasco allowed six runs on six hits and three walks while striking out two over two innings. Peterson gave up six runs on five hits and five walks while striking out five over 3 1/3 innings. Broncos Ring of Fame WR Lionel Taylor dies at 89
August 14 - By Field Level Media Lionel Taylor, a member of the Denver Broncos' Ring of Honor and the first pro receiver to make 100 receptions in a season, died on Aug. 6 at age 89, the team announced on Wednesday. Taylor also was the first Black man to hold a coordinator job in the NFL, according to NFL Films, when he served as the Los Angeles Rams' offensive coordinator in 1980 and '81. Taylor made eight appearances for the Chicago Bears in 1959 before jumping to the new American Football League in 1960 with the Broncos. He played seven years in Denver, winning first-team All-Pro honors four times and making the Pro Bowl three times. In 1960, he had an AFL-high 92 catches for 1,235 yards and 12 touchdowns in 12 games, then followed up by logging 100 receptions for 1,176 yards and four scores in 14 games the next year. Taylor topped the AFL in receptions five times during his stint with the Broncos. He concluded his playing career by playing for the Houston Oilers in 1967 and '68. In nine AFL seasons and 113 games, Taylor amassed 567 catches for 7,195 yards and 45 touchdowns. He still ranks among the Broncos' all-time top five in each of those categories as he totaled 543 catches for 6,872 yards and 44 scores for Denver. Taylor was the Pittsburgh Steelers' wide receivers coach for two Super Bowl championships in the 1970s before heading up the Rams' offense. The Broncos inducted Taylor into their Ring of Fame as part of the inaugural group in 1984.
