Camden County boxing gym in need of new building after reaching full capacity

He recently opened the Anointed Boxing Fitness and Outreach gym in Folkston as a way to help kids focus their anger, learn discipline and have a safe space to go. He's now seeing a blow to the business not because of a punch to the profits or participation, but an uppercut in growth causing the current gym building to tap out.
'If I have to give everything for this community, for these kids, that's what I'll do,' Davis said.
Davis says the gym building is now at full capacity, yet there are still more kids around the county looking to join. He recently started a fundraiser asking for $20,000 to help build the second gym.
'This is not about, 'oh I want to get rich.' No, I get rich by seeing these kids come in, be successful and be somebody,' said Davis.
Anointed Boxing teaches the sport to kids for free, even offering lessons and classes for adults looking to learn. Davis says he worked with the Jacksonville Jaguars to help get the gym off the ground, which he doesn't make any personal money off of.
Donations are what made the gym possible and Davis is now asking for more to get a second gym standing.
'We can invest our money in all types of other stuff, but what about lives?' Davis said. 'This isn't about the money, it's about giving these kids a safe place to go.'

Former Wisconsin basketball star agrees to one-year deal with Phoenix Suns
Former Wisconsin Badgers basketball star Nigel Hayes-Davis has agreed to a one-year contract with the Phoenix Suns, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. The deal is fully guaranteed. It marks Hayes-Davis' first taste of NBA action since he played five games with the Sacramento Kings during the 2017-18 slate. The news arrives roughly one month after the Badger alumnus wrapped up a spectacular season with Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul in Turkey. Hayes-Davis capped off the 2024-25 EuroLeague campaign with an 81-70 victory over Monaco, securing him EuroLeague Final Four MVP honors and the club's first championship since 2017. Hayes-Davis' recent title followed another championship run last summer, when he pocketed a Turkish League Championship and MVP honor in Turkey's Basketbol Süper Ligi Finals. The Ohio native averaged over 17 points per game to snag finals MVP honors throughout the series, which ignited his return to professional basketball in the United States. Between his time in Europe, the former Badger suited up alongside the USA Men's National Team during its exhibition schedule before the Olympic crew won gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Outside of practice, he played exhibitions in Las Vegas, London and Abu Dhabi alongside a bevy of NBA Hall of Famers, including now-teammate Devin Booker. Hayes-Davis reportedly drew interest from the Boston Celtics' head coach Joe Mazulla, who was spotted in Istanbul for the Bachesehir - Fenerbahçe game in early June. While the Celtics didn't bite, another franchise did. The former Wisconsin standout suited up in nine games for the Kings, Lakers and Raptors during the 2017-18 slate following his career in Madison, but he didn't experience as much success as he did in college. His European basketball journey appears to have rejuvenated his career, and now he will look to compete alongside players like Booker, Jalen Green, Bradley Beal, Dillon Brooks and Mark Williams. During his time in Madison, Hayes-Davis was named Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year (2014), a two-time third-team All-Big Ten (2015, 2017) honoree and an All-Big Ten first team selection in 2016. He, along with Frank Kaminsky and Sam Dekker, wound up in the 2015 NCAA title game against the Duke Blue Devils during one of the most memorable runs in franchise history. Pair of former UNC basketball stars to open NBA Summer League play on same day
Will these two Tar Heel standouts make their NBA teams' final rosters? Anticipation built throughout the week for this year's NBA Draft, with hundreds of prospects hoping to hear their names called. That anticipation continues into the weekend, after 59 draft picks and numerous free agent signings. Drake Powell was the only former Tar Heel to hear his name called in the NBA Draft, with the Atlanta Hawks choosing him 22nd overall. The Brooklyn Nets owned Powell's draft rights, so Powell will play in the New York City suburbs instead. RJ Davis starred for Hubert Davis during five years at UNC, but he wasn't considered an NBA Draft prospect. Davis didn't have to wait long in finding an NBA home, though, with the storied Los Angeles Lakers signing him to a free agent deal. The next stop for Powell, Davis and their fellow rookies is the NBA Summer League, which released its full slate of games on Friday. Powell and Davis won't play against each other, but the Nets and Lakers will both open against other opponents on July 10. Powell and his new Brooklyn teammates will open their Summer League slate against the Oklahoma City Thunder, which won its first-ever NBA Championship earlier in June, at 2:30 p.m. on July 10. Two-and-a-half hours later, RJ and his new Laker teammates will face the Dallas Mavericks. There's a chance Powell and Davis face each other in the Summer League playoffs, which starts July 19, but they'll get golden opportunities to showcase their NBA skills in several regular season games. RJ's collegiate career is more established than Powell's, with the former named ACC Player of the Year in 2024. Powell has everything an NBA roster covets, though: height, athleticism, lockdown defense, plus the ability to slam down thunderous dunks and drain 3-pointers at a high clip. North Carolina has two HBCUs on 2025-2026 schedule
North Carolina has officially announced its 2025–2026 non-conference men's basketball schedule, which includes two matchups against in-state HBCUs - Winston-Salem State and North Carolina Central. The Tar Heels will host Winston-Salem State on October 29 in an exhibition game, followed by a regular season contest against North Carolina Central on November 14. The games continue a meaningful tradition of North Carolina engaging with HBCUs, highlighting the state's rich basketball history and cultural connections. The Tar Heels last played Winston-Salem State to open the 2019–2020 season, earning a 96–61 win. That WSSU team would go on to win the CIAA championship under head coach Cleo Hill Jr., proving itself as one of the top programs in Division II HBCU basketball. North Carolina's last contest against North Carolina Central came during the pandemic-impacted 2020–2021 season. Despite being heavily favored, UNC had to battle for a 73–69 win over the Eagles, showcasing the competitive edge of HBCU programs even against traditional basketball powerhouses. This year's matchups hold special resonance for UNC head coach Hubert Davis. A native of Winston-Salem, Davis has personal ties to HBCUs - his father played at Johnson C. Smith University, a fellow CIAA member alongside WSSU. In 2022, Davis received the Clarence "Big House" Gaines Coach of the Year award, named in honor of the legendary WSSU head coach and Naismith Hall of Famer. These games provide valuable exposure and experience for HBCUs while giving North Carolina a chance to honor its connections to Black college basketball culture. For WSSU and NCCU, the opportunity to compete in Chapel Hill adds another layer of visibility and challenge for their respective programs. As UNC prepares for another season with national expectations, these early-season contests against HBCUs will serve as both a competitive tune-up and a celebration of North Carolina's deep basketball roots across all divisions.
