Heath ‘Central Park' district earns $5.8 million Ohio tax credit for second phase
HEATH, Ohio (WCMH) — A $218 million project tasking with building a downtown district for the city of Heath can move forward with a second phase after receiving a tax credit from the state of Ohio.
New Albany-based Wallick Communities earned a $5.8 million tax credit on Jan. 27 from Ohio's Transformational Mixed-Use Development Program to build the $66 million second phase of Heath's 'Central Park' development. The project's first phase was also awarded by the program, receiving an $8.5 million tax credit in January 2024.

Central Park is one of nine Ohio projects that the mixed-use program decided to support last month, like a development being built on the former Germain Amphitheater site near Polaris Fashion Place. Tax credits were also provided to a new Columbus tower and a project aiming to revitalize Capital Square around the Statehouse.
The Heath project's first phase is being built this year on 48 acres near Indian Mound Mall, spanning 500,000 square feet of development and including four mixed-use buildings, a community center and eight multi-family residential buildings.
Amenities will include a clubhouse with a community pool, volleyball courts, green space and recreational trail access. In addition, the mixed-use buildings will be home to 42,000 square feet of commercial retail space expected to be occupied by shops, offices, restaurants and breweries.

Central Park's second phase will develop more than 729,000 square feet and include additional multi-family residential buildings and assisted living facilities. A public plaza and a 410,000-square-foot sports complex with soccer fields and an ice skating rink are also planned for this phase.
The Heath development is expected to create about 575 construction jobs and 376 permanent jobs at the site once completed.
Fischer Homes announced last summer it will construct 21 single-family homes off State Route 13 in Heath as part of a development named 'Linnview Crossing,' marking the first time the company has built in the city. Linnview will be a few miles away from Central Park, and will offer 10 floor plans from Fischer's 'Maple Street Collection,' which range from 1,700 to 3,000 square feet.

Michaels completes acquisition of Joann's intellectual property and fan-favorite labels
NEW YORK (AP) — Craft labels from the now-shuttered fabrics seller Joann are making their way to a new home: Michaels. The Michaels Companies announced on Thursday that it had completed its purchase of Joann's intellectual property and private label brands — in an acquisition that arrives as the Texas-based arts and crafting chain works to expand its own fabric, sewing and yarn offerings. 'We're honored to have the opportunity to welcome JOANN customers into our creative community and are committed to delivering the selection, value, and inspiration they are looking for at Michaels,' Michaels CEO David Boone said in a statement. The deal, he added, allows the company to better 'respond to rising demand' among both new and existing customers. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. The Associated Press reached out to Michaels for further information on Friday. With roots dating back to a single Ohio storefront in 1943, Joann had grown into a destination for generations of sewers, quilters, knitters and lovers of other crafts for more than 80 years. But more recently, operational challenges continued to pile up — with the retailer pointing to sluggish consumer demand, inventory shortages and rising competition. Joann announced it would be going out of business back in February, just one month after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for the second time within a year. At the time, the company said financial services company GA Group, together with Joann's term lenders, had been selected as the winning bidder to 'acquire substantially all of Joann's assets' and conduct going-out-of-business sales at all store locations. Michaels on Thursday said that its purchase of Joann's IP and private brands included the acquisition of 'Big Twist' yarns, which had become a staple in Joann stores over the years. Those 'Big Twist' labels are now being developed as part of Michaels' portfolio — and will be available in-stores and online later this year, the company said. In the meantime, Michaels has also dedicated a landing page to welcome former Joann customers online. And as part of its overall expansion into fabrics, Michaels said on Thursday that its adding more than 600 new products from new and existing brands — including quilting supplies and fabrics, specialty threads, sewing machines and more. Michaels, founded in 1973, currently operates 1,300 stores across 49 U.S. states and Canada. Its parent company also owns Artistree, a framing merchandise manufacturer.

Exclusive-US suspends licenses to ship nuclear plant parts to China, sources say
By Karen Freifeld and Fanny Potkin (Reuters) -The U.S. in recent days suspended licenses for nuclear equipment suppliers to sell to China's power plants, according to four people familiar with the matter, as the two countries engage in a damaging trade war. The suspensions were issued by the U.S. Department of Commerce, the people said, and affect export licenses for parts and equipment used with nuclear power plants. Nuclear equipment suppliers are among a wide range of companies whose sales have been restricted over the past two weeks as the U.S.-China trade war shifted from negotiating tariffs to throttling each other's supply chains. It is unclear whether a Thursday call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping would affect the suspensions. The U.S. and China agreed on May 12 to roll back triple digit, tit-for-tat tariffs for 90 days, but the truce between the two biggest economies quickly went south, with the U.S. claiming China reneged on terms related to rare earth elements, and China accusing the U.S. of "abusing export control measures" by warning that using Huawei Ascend AI chips anywhere in the world violated U.S. export controls. After Thursday's call, further talks on key issues were expected. The U.S. Department of Commerce did not respond to a request for comment on the nuclear equipment restrictions. On May 28, a spokesperson said the department was reviewing exports of strategic significance to China. "In some cases, Commerce has suspended existing export licenses or imposed additional license requirements while the review is pending," the spokesperson said in a statement. The Chinese Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment. U.S. nuclear equipment suppliers include Westinghouse and Emerson. Westinghouse, whose technology is used in over 400 nuclear reactors around the world, and Emerson, which provides measurement and other tools for the nuclear industry, did not respond to requests for comment. The suspensions affect business worth hundreds of millions of dollars, two of the sources said. They also coincide with Chinese restrictions on critical metals threatening supply chains for manufacturers worldwide, especially America's Big Three automakers. Reuters could not determine whether the new restrictions were tied to the trade war, or if and how quickly they might be reinstated. Department of Commerce export licenses typically run for four years and include authorized quantities and values. But many new restrictions on exports to China have been imposed in the last two weeks, according to sources, and include license requirements for a hydraulic fluids supplier for sales to China. Other license suspensions went to GE Aerospace for jet engines for China's COMAC aircraft, sources said. The U.S. also now requires licenses to ship ethane to China, as Reuters reported first last week. Houston-based Enterprise Product Partners said Wednesday that its emergency requests to complete three proposed cargoes of ethane to China, totaling some 2.2 million barrels, had not been granted. Enterprise said a May 23 requirement for a license to sell butane to China, in addition to the ethane, was subsequently withdrawn. Dallas-based Energy Transfer said it was notified on Tuesday about the new ethane licensing requirement, and planned to apply and file for an emergency authorization. ‘Cable cowboy' to put 30,000 EV chargers on Britain's roads
'Cable cowboy' John Malone is bankrolling a deal to put 30,000 new electric vehicle (EV) chargers on Britain's roads. Liberty Global, which is controlled by the US billionaire, is spearheading a £300m investment in charge point operator Believ that will improve public access to chargers across the UK. The deal will deliver a major boost to the expansion of the UK's public charging network, which is a crucial factor in persuading drivers to switch to EVs. The Government has set a target of reaching 300,000 public charge points by the end of the decade, but drivers currently only have access to around 80,000. Believ will partner with both public and private sector organisations to roll out the new chargers where they are needed most. Most of the investment will go towards on-street, residential locations to help drivers without off-street parking transition to EVs. Funding will also be allocated to rapid and ultra-rapid charging hubs, as well as rural locations. Denver-based Liberty Global is controlled by Mr Malone, a Trump-supporting billionaire who is one of the largest individual landowners in the US. The 84-year-old holds a number of US media and entertainment assets, including Formula One. He is also a shareholder and board member at Warner Bros Discovery. An aggressive dealmaker, Mr Malone's holdings in paid TV and telecoms have earned him the nickname the 'cable cowboy'. Expansion into EV charging represents a new market for Mr Malone but builds on his other business interests. Believ partners with Virgin Media O2, which is also jointly owned by Liberty Global, to deploy its charging infrastructure. Guy Bartlett, the chief executive of Believ, said the funding 'recognises the scale of investment required and the urgency of the need'. He added: 'Confidence in EVs will continue to grow as drivers see more infrastructure going into the ground.' Figures published this week by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) showed that one in five new cars sold in Britain were battery-powered. Sales have been boosted by heavy discounting, but a rise in EV chargers is also starting to pay off. A record of nearly 3,000 charging devices were added to Britain's roads in April, equivalent to one every 29 minutes. Lilian Greenwood, the roads minister, said: 'We're working hard to ensure all drivers can charge easily and conveniently – no matter where they are. 'Believ's investment is a brilliant vote of confidence in the transition to electric and another fantastic example of Government and industry working together to roll out tens of thousands of charge points across the country.' In addition to private funding, the Government has pledged £2.3bn to support the switch to EVs, with a £200m budget to help expand public charging and a dedicated £381m fund for local authorities. Zouk Capital, the private equity firm that jointly owns Believ alongside Liberty Global, is also contributing to the funding, alongside banks Santander, ABN Amro, NatWest and MUFG.
