The second man in the plane was hospitalized with serious injuries following the crash, according to CBS News, local outlet WHDH and NBC affiliate WBTS. The crash occurred shortly after the plane took off from the airport, according to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which is leading the investigation. 'After take off, witnesses reported seeing black smoke from the belly of the aircraft and the pilot reported engine issues to local air traffic control,' the agency said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE. On Thursday afternoon, the NTSB arrived on scene and the plane was recovered so it could be examined further by investigators. Andrews' family said they are 'devastated and heartbroken,' according to a GoFundMe page created by a loved one. 'We thank the investigators who we trust will conduct a thorough investigation into what caused this catastrophic loss of life,' wrote Geoffrey's uncle, who did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment. 'We also pray for his passenger in the plane and are sending his loved ones strength through this difficult time.' Andrews, who dreamed of becoming an astronaut, was a staff scientist at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, and had earned his PhD from Purdue University, according to a message shared on the donation page. He was also a graduate of Lehigh University and had started teaching there as a visiting lecturer. Beyond his work in a laboratory, the young man was excited about flying and was a volunteer glider pilot, flew aerobatics for years and was working on becoming a certified flight instructor. Additionally, family said that his wife is expecting their first child, who's due in October. 'He was so excited about the upcoming birth of their baby,' wrote his uncle, adding that Geoffrey was a 'charismatic, beautiful soul who cared deeply for his family and friends and always had a kind word for others.' Burial service to be held June 9 for Gravette WWII soldier killed in D-Day invasion
GRAVETTE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — After more than 80 years, a Northwest Arkansan hero is returning home. Private Rodger Dean Andrews, a World War II soldier from Gravette, will be laid to rest with full military honors at 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 9, at Bethel Cemetery in Gravette, according to the Benton County Sheriff's Office (BSCO). His remains, recently identified after decades of uncertainty, will arrive in Northwest Arkansas the evening of Sunday, June 8 and be received by Epting Funeral Home in Bentonville. On Monday, the BCSO Motor Division will escort Private Andrews to his final resting place, joined by Military Honors and the Patriot Guard. The procession will depart Epting Funeral Home (709 N. Walton Blvd, Bentonville) at 1:15 p.m. and follow this route: South on N. Walton Blvd Right on SW 14th Street (Highway 102) Right on Highway 59 through Decatur Right on Bethel Road in Gravette Left into Bethel Cemetery 'Community members are encouraged to line the route and pay their respects to honor the life and service of Private Rodger Dean Andrews, a true American hero,' BSCO said in a Facebook post. Andrews, 19, was accounted for on June 5. Andrews was assigned in June 1944 to Company C of the 37th Engineer Combat Battalion in the European Theater. On June 6, 1944, American, Canadian and British forces came ashore on the beaches of Normandy in France during Operation Overlord. The release said that at some point during the battle, Andrews was killed, but due to the chaos, it is not known what happened to him. Private Rodger Dean Andrews' remains were recovered after D-Day but went unidentified for decades. In 2014, his family requested renewed efforts. A belt with his initials helped prompt a review, and in 2019, the remains were exhumed. Scientists confirmed his identity through dental and anthropological analysis. A rosette will now mark his name at the Normandy American Cemetery. Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders said during her remarks at the 2025 Memorial Day Observance at Camp Robinson in North Little Rock that U.S. Army Private Rodger D. GOP state Rep. Eddie Andrews launches 'ground up' campaign for Iowa governor in 2026
State Rep. Eddie Andrews has formally launched a campaign for governor, saying he hopes to build a "people-first," "ground-up" movement to create a new way forward for Iowa. At a rally in front of the Iowa Capitol on Wednesday, June 4, Andrews, a Republican, said he doesn't expect to be the best-funded candidate in the race. And he alluded to the more than $8 million Democratic candidate and State Auditor Rob Sand has already raised for his gubernatorial bid. But Andrews said he's been outspent in his previous races and still managed to win. "You're effectively looking at a race with unlimited resources," he said. "… I've learned the hard way that you still run if you feel led to do that and let the chips fall where they may." Still, he said, his campaign will be able to raise some money and has a seven-figure financial commitment he will roll out in the coming days. Andrews represents Iowa House District 43 and was reelected to a third term in 2024. His district includes Johnston, as well as parts of Urbandale and Saylorville. He is married to Betty Andrews, the Iowa-Nebraska NAACP president. He said, like many Iowans, he and his spouse have different political beliefs. 'I think a lot of people look to us as an example of how love can conquer differences sometimes," he said. In his pursuit of the governor's office, Andrews said he'll run a campaign focused on improving Iowa's education system, combating human trafficking, eliminating property taxes and fighting against the use of eminent domain for carbon capture pipelines. "People in rural Iowa are fighting for their lives not to be bullied by people with money," he said. "And I am on the landowner's side. I have chosen a side. It's the Constitution and landowner rights." Andrews' announcement comes after incumbent Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds announced in April she would forego reelection in 2026, opening the Republican primary field and shifting the state's political landscape. Andrews said he began praying about whether to enter the race before Reynolds said she would not seek another term. "As people of faith, we can't always explain why we have an urge to pray about something," he said. "But we had an urge, and we were talking right there in the rotunda, and we just started to just start praying right then about whether Eddie Andrews should be putting his hat in the race for the governor." Andrews said he doesn't plan to campaign against the other Republicans competing in the primary, but he will put forward his vision for the state. "I'm all about helping people. Full stop," he told reporters. "Protecting the Constitution, defending your rights, being creative. … Let's be creative in our solutions. Let's be creative in things that we provide to Iowans. We don't have to do things the same old, same old way." Former state Rep. Brad Sherman, a Williamsburg pastor and a Republican, launched his campaign for governor before Reynolds' announcement. And other Republicans have begun making moves toward formal campaigns. Republican U.S. Rep. Randy Feenstra has formed a gubernatorial exploratory committee, and he has aggressively made moves toward a formal campaign. State Sen. Michael Bousselot also has formed an exploratory committee. And Attorney General Brenna Bird has hinted at a run, posting a video to social media mashing together clips of President Donald Trump praising her and telling an Iowa crowd that "she's going to be your governor someday, I predict."
