Meghalaya unveils ‘Mission Clean Shillong '27' ahead of Nat'l Games

Shillong: With Meghalaya to host the next National Games, the state govt has launched an ambitious new campaign — Mission Clean Shillong 2027 — aimed at transforming the state capital into one of India's cleanest cities.
The two-year initiative, spearheaded by CM Conrad K Sangma, calls for collective action to achieve 'litter-free streets, pristine waters, and pure air'. The timing of the campaign is crucial, as Shillong is set to host thousands of athletes and tourists for the National Games.
"We have the cleanest river and the cleanest village, why not the cleanest cities too?" the CM asked, framing the mission as a natural extension of Meghalaya's legacy of environmental stewardship.
"A community-first approach unlike previous top-down programmes, the campaign emphasises participatory governance. Localities will lead monthly clean-up drives, receive incentives for waste segregation, and compete for the 'Cleanest Locality' title," an official statement said.
The draft campaign document is open to public feedback until June 25. Citizens, civil society organizations, and local leaders have been invited to contribute suggestions via email, phone, or by visiting the Shillong Municipal Board office.

Indian students accounted for nearly 27% of all international students in the United States in 2024, according to the latest report by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The report, titled SEVIS by the Numbers 2024, shows that 4.2 lakh Indian students were actively enrolled in the US, marking an 11.8% increase from 2023. This growth helped push the total number of foreign students in the US to 15.8 lakh — a 5.3% rise over the previous year. As per a report by Lubna Kably in the Times of India, the data comes from the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), a tool used by the US Department of Homeland Security to track foreign students. F-1 visas are issued for academic programs, while M-1 visas are used for vocational training. Asia remained the largest source region, with nearly 11 lakh students — making up 72% of the total foreign student population. India and China were the two top source countries. While Indian student numbers rose sharply, China saw a slight decline of 0.25%, with 3.2 lakh students in 2024. The ICE report highlights that more than 90% of foreign students — about 14.3 lakh — were enrolled in higher education degree programs. California and New York were the top destinations for international students, hosting 2.37 lakh and 1.72 lakh students respectively. The number fell from 11.53 lakh in March 2024 to 10.22 lakh in March 2025. Glass said, 'The current year-over-year decline is a reflection of an enrollment cycle that began under the Biden administration, so the March 2025 numbers have yet to reflect any impacts of policies implemented under the second Trump administration.' Experts point to several reasons for the recent fall in Indian student numbers — including the arbitrary termination of F-1 visas and SEVIS records, legal uncertainties, delays in consular services due to planned social media scrutiny rules, doubts about the continuation of the STEM-OPT program, and widespread layoffs in the US job market. These factors could push student numbers further down in 2026. Despite recent declines, Indian students continue to lead in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields. In 2024, nearly 1.65 lakh international students received a two-year STEM OPT extension after graduation. Of these, 48% were Indian students and 20.4% were Chinese. Eid prayers not allowed at Srinagar's Jama Masjid, Mirwaiz alleges house arrest
For the seventh year in a row, the authorities in Srinagar did not allow Eid-ul-Adha prayers at the historic Eidgah ground and Jamia Masjid in the old city on Saturday and placed Kashmir's leading cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house arrest. The gates of Jamia Masjid were locked early in the morning, and police were deployed outside to prevent entry. 'Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid, Srinagar, deeply regrets to inform that the authorities have once again disallowed Eid-ul-Adha prayers at the Eidgah as well as at the historic Jama Masjid in by closing the gates of the mosque and deploying police personnel outside,' the management of the historic mosque said in a statement. It said the authorities did not even permit the pre-dawn (Fajr) prayers. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq condemned the move and posted on X: 'Eid Mubarak! Yet again, Kashmir wakes up to the sad reality: no Eid prayers at Eidgah, and Jama Masjid locked down for the 7th straight year. I too have been detained at my home.' 'In a Muslim-majority region, Muslims are deprived of their fundamental right to pray -- even on their most important religious occasion celebrated across the world!' he said. 'What a shame on those who rule over us, and on those elected by the people who choose to remain silent as our rights are trampled over, again and again,' Mirwaiz said on X. After offering namaz at Hazratbal dargah on the outskirts of Srinagar, chief minister Omar Abdullah said, 'While we are celebrating Eid, unfortunately, once again, permission was denied to offer namaz in Srinagar's iconic Jama Masjid. I don't know the basis of these decisions, but we need to learn to trust our people. These are the same people who came out to protest against the Pahalgam terrorist attack. The government should think about allowing namaz at the historic Jama Masjid.' Reacting to the developments, PDP leader Iltija Mufti said: 'I want to ask the National Conference government and the lieutenant governor (Manoj Sinha) why the Mirwaiz is still being placed under house arrest when you claim everything is normal. As India's only and the largest Muslim majority state, we Kashmiris have the right to worship... More than infrastructure, we need dignity and security of life.' PDP chief and former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti said: 'Unfortunately, the government, on this pious day, has denied permission to offer namaz in the Jama Masjid, and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has been put under house arrest... I protest against the state government also, which is just watching everything and doing nothing.'
