Shillong aims to become ‘cleanest city in India' ahead of nat'l games

Shillong: Following the ceremonial handover of the National Games 2027 baton to Meghalaya by Uttarakhand on Feb 14, 2025, CM Conrad K Sangma has entrusted the urban affairs department with the responsibility of showcasing Shillong as a world-class host city and a decision was made for unified efforts to make it the 'cleanest city in India', given the context of Meghalaya already being home to the cleanest river and cleanest village. "In response, cleanliness activities have been significantly intensified and are now being implemented in mission mode. The Shillong Municipal Board has employed 190 staff on a contractual basis, including 105 sweepers, 35 drain cleaners, and 50 security staff dedicated to cleaning rivers and penalising littering. The new contractual staff are working alongside 295 permanent staff, collectively contributing to noticeable improvements in the city's cleanliness," commissioner & secretary, urban affairs department, Vijay Kumar D said, adding the staff are working in three rotational shifts and are on the streets day and night. "It is heartening that these improvements are being commended by residents and tourists," Kumar said, even as he informed that the CM had recently convened a high-level consultative inter-departmental meeting with civil society members, technical experts, and key stakeholders to address pressing challenges related to cleaning up of Wah Umkhrah and Wah Umshyrpi Rivers.

"Tura Secretariat will function as 'additional secretariat' for Garo hills": Meghalaya CM

Shillong (Meghalaya) [India], May 28 (ANI): Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma declared that the Tura Secretariat will function as 'additional secretariat' for the people of Garo Hills. Speaking at a programme at Samanda and Williamnagar on Tuesday, CM Sangma unveiled the architectural drawing of the Tura Secretariat. 'Initially, the project was conceptualised as a mini Secretariat, but the government felt that the infrastructure should be upgraded to accommodate all department offices, the chief minister office, ministers office and bureaucrats', he said, while stating that the Tura Secretariat will ensure delivery of government services to the people of Garo Hills. 'People from Garo Hills have to travel to Shillong for different official works. The purpose of the Tura Secretariat will be to ensure that people from Garo Hills can easily get their official paperwork submitted for further processing at Tura itself', he added. The initial cost of the mini secretariat at Tura was Rs 30 crore, which has now been estimated at Rs 150 crore. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma stated that the Tura Convention Centre will be adjacent to the Tura Secretariat, as depicted in the architectural 3D drawings. He added that the first phase of the Secretariat is slated to be completed by January 2027. Earlier on May 22, CM Sangma launched the German Language Training Programme for Overseas Placement at the Shillong Tech Park. The programme, supported by the Meghalaya State Skill Development Society (MSSDS) under the Department of Labour, Employment & Skill Development, is aimed at training and placing qualified healthcare professionals from the state in Germany. Following the successful deployment of Meghalaya's youth to Japan and Singapore, Germany has now become the next destination offering a global stage for the state's aspiring nurses and healthcare professionals. 'What we are doing here today is converting a challenge into a great opportunity. Meghalaya has one of the youngest populations in the country, and we are turning this demographic advantage into a global force. If we send even 30,000 professionals abroad, the remittances can amount to Rs 250 crore a month -- that's Rs 3000 crore a year into our families' hands', the Chief Minister remarked. (ANI)

Conrad gives smartphones to anganwadi workers, focus on enhancing efficiency

1 2 Shillong: CM Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday distributed smartphones among anganwadi workers at a ceremony held at St George Higher Secondary School in Samanda, East Garo Hills. Anganwadi workers from different regions of East Garo Hills gathered to receive their smartphones at the event. State social welfare minister Paul Lyngdoh and PHE minister Marcuise Marak attended the function. Sangma emphasised that the smartphones would improve the efficiency and delivery of anganwadi services. The Union ministry of women and child development provided Rs 6 crore funding to purchase 6,162 smartphones for the workers to support their essential duties. "The phones will bridge the digital divide and improve service delivery," Conrad said and noted that the POSHAN App installation would enable workers to input data, information and complete reporting duties, leading to enhanced monitoring of social welfare programmes. "The mobile application digitizes the physical registers used by anganwadi workers, improving the quality of their work while enabling real-time monitoring," he said. The CM announced that anganwadi workers would receive incentives for consistent monitoring and recording of children's height and weight measurements up to age six, with data uploads to the POSHAN Tracker. The chief minister also presented IIT Innovation ECO H2O Filters to anganwadi centres during the programme, ensuring clean drinking water access for rural children. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Additionally, he opened the new building at St George Higher Secondary School, Samanda, dedicating the facility to students' educational advancement. 1 2 3 4 Shillong: Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday launched a climate-adaptive-community-based Water Harvesting Project, externally funded by Asian Development Bank under the soil and water conservation department, at Mendipathar College Cricket Ground, North Garo Hills district, with an aim to enhance water security and increase community climate resilience in the state. "This project amounting to $62.5 million (Rs 516 crore) aims to create 10 million cubic meters of water storage, protect 12,500 hectares of catchment areas, and transform about 3,297 hectares of command area to provide reliable irrigation areas for farmers," a statement issued by the soil and water conservation department said. "The project aims to establish 50 weather stations for climate data gathering and monitoring and micro-irrigation systems in all 12 districts of the State. The project will support the construction of 533 water harvesting facilities across all districts. These facilities will incorporate climate-resilient designs to capture and manage heavy rainfall and flash floods during monsoon season," the statement said, adding that the CM, along with senior officials, visited remote areas of North Garo Hills to better understand the situation and connect with citizens at grassroots level. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 새로 나온 '실손보험' 최적가 비교가입!
