CM launches water harvesting project in North Garo Hills

Shillong: Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday launched a climate-adaptive-community-based Water Harvesting Project, externally funded by Asian Development Bank under the soil and water conservation department, at Mendipathar College Cricket Ground, North Garo Hills district, with an aim to enhance water security and increase community climate resilience in the state.
"This project amounting to $62.5 million (Rs 516 crore) aims to create 10 million cubic meters of water storage, protect 12,500 hectares of catchment areas, and transform about 3,297 hectares of command area to provide reliable irrigation areas for farmers," a statement issued by the soil and water conservation department said.
"The project aims to establish 50 weather stations for climate data gathering and monitoring and micro-irrigation systems in all 12 districts of the State.
The project will support the construction of 533 water harvesting facilities across all districts. These facilities will incorporate climate-resilient designs to capture and manage heavy rainfall and flash floods during monsoon season," the statement said, adding that the CM, along with senior officials, visited remote areas of North Garo Hills to better understand the situation and connect with citizens at grassroots level.

Nine people -- seven in East Kameng district and two in Lower Subansiri district -- were killed on Friday night due to landslides triggered by torrential rain in the northeastern state since May 29. Chief Minister Pema Khandu expressed condolences over the deaths and said that necessary assistance would be provided to the affected people through the respective district administrations. State Home Minister and local MLA Mama Natung, and Union Minister Rijiju also deeply condoled the deaths. Seven people, including two women and two children, lost their lives on Friday night in East Kameng district when a vehicle carrying members of two families was swept off the road by a huge landslide between the Bana-Seppa stretch of National Highway-13. In a separate incident in Lower Subansiri district, two labourers were killed and two others rescued after a landslide hit a cabbage farm near the Pine Grove area along the Ziro-Kamle road. The Chief Minister urged people to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel, particularly during the night. He also appealed to the people not to venture into rivers and water bodies for the time being. All departments concerned are on high alert to respond to emergencies, CM Khandu said.

Floods, Landslides Batter Northeastern States Amid Rain Fury, Death Toll Rises To 34
Last Updated: Earlier on Sunday, the Indian Air Force (IAF) and Assam Rifles were roped to assist in the rescue operation of people stranded amid floodwaters. At least 34 people have died as the northeast states– Assam, Manipur, Tripura, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and others– reel under heavy rain in the past three days. Several regions in these states are experiencing flooding, landslides and increasing river water levels. Earlier on Sunday, the Indian Air Force (IAF) and Assam Rifles were roped to assist in the rescue operation of people stranded amid floodwaters. 19 Districts Hit In Assam In Assam, 764 villages across 19 districts have been hit in flash floods, affecting 3.6 lakh people across Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, Hailakandi, Hojai, Kamrup, Dhemaji, Nagaon, Sribhumi, Darrang, Karbi Anglong, Sonitpur, DimaHasao, Biswanath, Cachar, Sivasagar, Majuli, Golaghat, Tinsukia, and Karbi Anglong West districts. According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) flood reports, one person drowned in flood waters in Sribhumi district, while a child lost his life after drowning in flood waters in Cachar district. With two more deaths, the toll of flood and landslides in Assam have gone up to 10. Assam Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah said the state government has announced Rs 4 lakh compensation to the families of victims. The ASDMA report has said that over one lakh people have been affected in Cachar, while over 83 thousand have been affected in Sribhumi, 62 thousand in Nagaon, 46 thousand in Lakhimpur, 19 thousand in Tinsukia, 10 thousand in Dibrugarh. As per the ASDMA report, over 55,000 people have taken shelter in 155 relief camps and distribution centres set up by the district administration in the flood affected areas, while the Air Force, NDRF, SDRF, fire and emergency services, Civil defence and local administration have engaged in rescue operations. Tourists Stranded In Sikkim More than 1,200 tourists have been stranded in north Sikkim. Evacuation was scheduled for Sunday, but fresh landslides came in the way. Eight tourists who went missing on May 29 after their vehicle plunged into the Teesta River at Munshithang, are yet to be traced. In Meghalaya, 10 districts have been affected by flash floods and landslides. More than 10,000 people have been affected by flash floods in Tripura. 1500 Rescued In Manipur Meanwhile, in Manipur, the Assam Rifles, with the Army and fire officials, have rescued over 1500 people, providing them with relief materials. Commanding officer of 33 Assam Rifles Colonel Radha Krishnan said that over 1500 people have been rescued in Imphal East and West. 'So far, we have rescued around 1500 people from Imphal East and West. Eight columns and four reserve columns are deployed on the ground, helping the people," he said as quoted by news agency ANI. 9 Dead In Arunachal Pradesh Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu offered condolences to the families of the people who died due to massive landslides triggered by incessant monsoon rains since last few days across the state and announced ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh each to the kin of the deceased. At least 9 deaths have been reported in the state, seven in East Kameng district and two in Ziro valley. Expecting more rain in the coming days, Khandu has called upon the people to remain vigilant and maintain extreme caution. He appealed to all not to travel, especially during the night, if not absolutely necessary, as almost all rivers, rivulets, and streams across the state are in spate, he advised all not to venture into rivers and urged dwellers in vulnerable areas to move to safer locations. 'My heart goes out to the departed souls. Our prayers are with them. Let's maintain extreme caution and remain vigilant to avoid further loss of lives," he added. Heat, humidity return as monsoon progress stalls

Paralakhemundi recorded the highest temperature of 39.4 degrees Celsius on Sunday, followed by Bhubaneswar and Nayagarh, both recording 38C. Relative humidity ranged between 45% and 91% in places across the state, increasing the discomfort level. "Monsoon has not advanced for the last three days. Due to cloudless sky, temperature increased in various parts of the state on Sunday, and the humidity levels also went up," said IMD weather scientist Uma Shankar Das. "Due to lack of major rainfall, temperature increased slightly.
