Strengths: Chris Jans' junkyard dogs possess considerable size. They're 6-foot-4 or taller at shooting guard, on the wing and across the frontline. It's no shock they're one of the better offensive rebounding teams in the field, generating a second chance on 34.4 percent of their possessions. Stretch Armstrongs RJ Melendez and KeShawn Murphy also steadily rack shots within 15 feet. Both are major reasons why MSU ranks top-80 nationally in 2-point percentage offense. Generally in control due to the crafty handles of Josh Hubbard, the Bulldogs commit few turnovers. Conversely, they coax numerous mistakes, as evidenced by their No. 81 slotting in defensive turnover rate in the regular season.

Weaknesses: The defensive inadequacies are alarming and apparent. MSU has a tendency to overcommit, leading to frequent open opponent 3-pointers. Over the last month of the regular season, competitors shot a blistering 38.5 percent from distance against them. Only subpar at challenging hoists inside the arc, the Bulldogs ranked an abhorrent No. 344 in effective field goal percentage in their last 10 games. On the opposite end, their perimeter execution was equally ineffective, ranking No. 330 in 3-point percentage offense. Their lack of conversions at the charity stripe are also inexcusable. State entered the postseason No. 255 in free-throw percentage. Spoiled opportunities in close games are likely to lead to its demise.
Outlook: Roll the dice on the representatives from StarkVegas, and your chip stacks could immediately disappear. Yes, Hubbard is a scoring machine who can leave opposing coaches vexed. His dishing and scoring wizardry are well documented. However, the Bulldogs' gashable defense is an unignorable weakness. Save that Milkbone for a more deserving dog. Mississippi State last reached the Round of 32 in 2008. It's doubtful the streak of futility ends.

Strengths: Elite one-and-done talent has been a theme for Scott Drew over the past few years, and this season is no exception. Baylor has one of the nation's best NBA prospects in projected top-10 pick VJ Edgecombe, a 6-foot-5 freshman who is a walking highlight reel. The Bears are also one of the best offensive-rebounding teams, grabbing 36 percent of their misses to rank top-30 nationally. Their team speed stands out when you watch them play. They have athletes all over the floor capable of taking defenders off the dribble when they deploy 6-7 Norchad Omier at the five in small lineups. Another strength is Drew. He's one of six active coaches with a national title on his resume.

Weaknesses: Baylor lacks size, making it difficult to play consistently good defense. Only one player from its top eight — 6-10 Josh Ojianwuna — is taller than 6-7, and the team's average height of 77 inches ranks 211th in the country. That puts a lot of pressure on the guards to limit paint touches. The Bears are top-20 in offensive efficiency but just top-60 in defensive efficiency, making for a less-than-ideal blueprint for March Madness success. They also rank below 190th nationally in effective field goal percentage and 3-point field goal percentage defense. To make a run, they'll have to correct some of their defensive inefficiencies.
Outlook: When playing a team capable of filling it up, Baylor struggles. All but two of its losses (Tennessee and TCU) have come against teams in the top 25 of KenPom's offensive efficiency metric. This team can score, but when that ability is matched, the Bears tend to falter. That could make them an easy out before the second weekend.

Shohei Ohtani notches 6 strikeouts in 3 simulated innings against live batters as he ramps up return to mound

Shohei Ohtani was back on the mound on Tuesday as he ramps up his return to pitching in an actual MLB game. By most accounts he looked pretty good. Ohtani pitched three simulated innings against live minor league batters at Petco Park Tuesday afternoon prior to the NL West tilt between his Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres. Advertisement Per and The Athletic, Ohtani threw 44 pitches. Per The Athletic's Fabian Ardaya, Ohtani allowed one hit and one walk and threw a wild pitch. He recorded six of his nine outs via strikeout. Here's video of a swinging strike to record the final out of his session: Again, the effort was against minor league batters during batting practice. But it's another encouraging sign for the Dodgers and their fans eager to see the two-way superstar pitch in Dodger blue for the first time. Tuesday's simulated innings were Ohtani's first on the mound since a May 31 session that went two innings. It was his third time overall throwing a live batting practice session and the first time he's exceeded two innings. Advertisement Ohtani's pitching work was previously limited to bullpen sessions that didn't involve batters. So when will Ohtani actually pitch? There were no immediate updates from the Dodgers after Ohtani's session on Tuesday. Roberts previously said after Ohtani's May 31 session that he'll need to reach "five or six" simulated innings before the Dodgers consider putting him into an actual baseball game. Shohei Ohtani continues to progress on the mound, but a return timeline to pitching in an actual game remains unclear. (AP Photo/Joe Puetz) (ASSOCIATED PRESS) '[He] used his entire mix, take some hitters up, down and came out of it well, which is most important,' Roberts said on May 31. 'I think he wishes his command would have been a little bit better. But a really positive day for Shohei. Advertisement 'You still got to get to five or six innings, so we still got a ways to go. … I didn't ask what the velocity was, I would think a safe guess is somewhere in the mid 90s.' Ohtani hasn't pitched in a game since August 23, 2023, when he was a member of the Los Angeles Angels. He underwent surgery a month later for the second time to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. He previously underwent Tommy John surgery in 2018. Ohtani signed with the Dodgers the following offseason and earned his third MVP after a historic 50-50 season at the plate. The Dodgers went on to a World Series championship, Ohtani's first. Ohtani's off to another sensational start at the plate that includes an NL-best 23 home runs through Monday. But his return to the mound is still unclear as his absence approaches the two-year mark. Advertisement A 40-27 Dodgers team leading a tight race in the NL West could certainly use the pitching services of Ohtani, who's at an All-Star level at his best. But don't expect them to throw caution to the wind. They won't put Ohtani on the mound until they and their medical staff are fully convinced that he's ready. In the meantime, the Dodgers and their fans can take solace in Ohtani's quest for a fourth MVP at the plate.

Nets projected to take Michigan C Danny Wolf No. 27 in 2025 NBA Draft

The Brooklyn Nets have some important decisions to make ahead of the 2025 NBA Draft that begins on June 25 in which the team will have five picks to use. Brooklyn is focused on more than just the Draft, but when it comes to their future, the Nets will have to do their homework given that the players they take this year could be crucial members of the roster. In his latest mock draft for Bleacher Report, Jonathan Wasserman projected the Nets to take Michigan center Danny Wolf with the 27th overall pick in the Draft, the last of four first-round picks Brooklyn has at its disposal. Wolf, standing at 6-foot-11 and 252 pounds, is one of the more interesting players in this class given his ability to handle the ball and shoot at his size. Advertisement "Danny Wolf made a strong, final pitch to scouts against Auburn, finishing with 20 points and a number of eye-opening highlights that showcased his creation and shotmaking," Wasserman wrote on Wolf. "Though his three-point numbers might not indicate shooting improvement, he added a pull-up and step-back to his repertoire this year." Wolf, 21, is coming off a junior season with the Wolverines in which he averaged 13.2 points, 9.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.4 blocks per game while shooting 49.7% from the field and 33.6% from three-point land. Wolf put forth his production for a Michigan team that finished the 2024-25 regular season with a 27-10 record, allowing them to make the NCAA Tournament where they made it all the way to the Sweet 16 before losing to the Auburn Tigers. While it will be interesting to see if Wolf last until the 27th overall pick in a class that seems to taper off around the 12th pick or so, his skill set will be interesting for every team that has a first-round pick outside of the Lottery. "A 7-footer who made 21 dribble jumpers, served as Michigan's lead playmaker and still averaged 9.7 boards and 1.4 blocks is bound to entice a number of teams," Wasserman continued. Micah Parsons will attend Cowboys training camp with or without a contract extension: 'I'll be out there'

Micah Parsons confirmed that he would attend the Dallas Cowboys training camp in Oxnard, California in August, even if he and the team do not reach a new contractual agreement. The statement comes as the pass rusher attempts to negotiate a new deal in Dallas. On Tuesday, Parsons was present at the Cowboys mandatory minicamp and told media members, 'I'll be out there.' Advertisement Parsons did not clarify if he would be participating in the Oxnard camps despite guaranteeing his presence. He also did not participate in drills on Tuesday despite addressing the press. According to The Athletic's Jon Machota, Parsons mentioned a lengthy meeting with team owner Jerry Jones in which his contract was not discussed. The Cowboys' minicamp runs through Thursday, meaning Parsons may get an answer about his contract over the next 48 hours. Before Tuesday, Parsons made a social media statement that had fans wondering if he was foreshadowing a training camp holdout. 'Even though the contract is not done, I have teammates and a playbook!' Parsons posted on X. 'I'm preparing as if I will be on the field the first week of camp! But it's in the owner's hands. I'm ready to win a Super Bowl." Advertisement Parsons is currently under the fifth-year option of his rookie contract that pays him $24 million in 2025. In his fourth year with America's Team, the 26-year-old tallied 30 solo and 13 assisted tackles with 12 sacks. Unfortunately, after three straight 12-5 seasons, the Cowboys had a tragic 7-10 record and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2021. The brutal ending led to the Cowboys firing coach Mike McCarthy after five seasons. The head coach was replaced by Brian Schottenheimer, who assured Parsons his contractual limbo would be sorted. After Parsons called his new coach for a TikTok video, Schottenheimer commended Parsons' attitude over the situation. 'I know this is weird for everybody, but look, you're handling everything the right way, bro,' Schottenheimer told Parsons. 'This thing is going to get worked out.'
