Outback Wrangler Matt Wright hit with new bombshell charges over the helicopter crash that killed his co-star and paralysed the pilot
Matt Wright is facing two further criminal charges in the Northern Territory Supreme Court following a fatal helicopter crash that killed his co-star Chris 'Willow' Wilson.
The TV personality and crocodile wrangler had been scheduled to front Darwin court in early July over one count of attempting to pervert the course of justice.
But during a pre-trial hearing via Teams on Wednesday, the charges changed.
A Director of Public Prosecutions spokesperson said Wright is facing three counts of attempting to pervert the course of justice rather than one, News.com.au reported.
The charges are related to events which allegedly took place following the helicopter going down in West Arnhem Land in February 2022.
Mr Wilson plunged to his death in a remote area of the Northern Territory while dangling from a helicopter owned by Wright as he collected crocodile eggs.
He is survived by his wife Danielle and their two young sons.
The pilot, 28-year-old Sebastian Robinson, was seriously injured during the crash and has been left a paraplegic. Wright was not aboard the helicopter.
Following the incident, Wright and his pilot Michael Burbidge were allegedly first on the scene, with former NT police officer Neil Mellon.
The three were later charged over their alleged actions following the crash.
Burbidge was fined $15,000 after he pleaded guilty to destruction of evidence, for disposing of Mr Wilson's phone.
Mellon was sentenced to eight months behind bars after pleading guilty to offences including, six counts of disclosing confidential information, destroying evidence and obtaining a benefit by deception.
Charges against both men of attempting to pervert the course of justice were withdrawn.
Wright has consistently denied all allegations against him. His legal team declined to comment when contacted by Daily Mail Australia.
During the hearing, Justice Blow heard that the prosecution expected to call 56 witnesses for the eight-week trial, NT News reported.
Defence barrister Luke Officer told the court that it was 'inconceivable' to complete preparations within four weeks before the trial was due to begin.
Prosecutor James Moore argued the defence did not adequately engage when it was finalising the list of matters.
Justice Blow set the trial date to July 28.
Wright was also facing an additional six charges which are understood to have remained before the Local Court.
They include one count of menacing or intimidating chopper pilot Sebastian Robinson, one count of making a false declaration, one count of fabricating evidence, one count of destroying evidence and two counts of unlawful entry.
Wright is yet to enter pleas to those charges but, in a statement released in 2023, he said he was 'hopeful the remaining charges will all be withdrawn once this charge (of perverting the course of justice) is dealt with'.

A man who raped a 15-year-old girl after following her in a busy town centre has been jailed for nine years. Sadeq Nikzad, an Afghan asylum seeker, preyed on the teenager after spotting her in Falkirk in October 2023. The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service said the 29-year-old attempted to speak to the girl, repeatedly asking for her phone number and uttering sexual remarks. He then led her into a courtyard where he subjected her to a serious sexual assault. Detective Inspector Forbes Wilson, from the Forth Valley Public Protection Unit, said: "This was a particularly harrowing attack which was carried out during daylight in a busy town centre. "Nikzad's heinous actions had a profound effect on his young victim and I would like to commend her strength throughout this ordeal. "I would also like to thank local officers for their excellent work which ensured Nikzad was identified, arrested and off the street within a few short hours following the incident." Nikzad was in March found guilty of rape following a trial at the High Court in Edinburgh. At the High Court in Livingston on Wednesday, Judge John Morris KC said: "Mr Nikzad, whilst I appreciate that you do not accept you have done anything wrong, the fact remains that you have been convicted of an extremely serious sexual offence against a child." He added that "only a substantial custodial sentence" would be appropriate. Nikzad was handed a 12-year extended sentence, with nine years in prison and three years on licence once released back into the community. He was also placed on the sex offenders' register indefinitely and banned from contacting his victim. Katrina Parkes, procurator fiscal for high court sexual offences, said: "This was an appalling, opportunistic attack on a young girl who should have been safe going about her daily business. "The victim should be commended for reporting Sadeq Nikzad to the police, ensuring that he has now been held accountable while also protecting others from harm."

Grim update on underworld figure's bodyguard following broad daylight shooting in busy Sydney kebab shop
One of the victims of a brazen shooting in a kebab shop may 'never walk again'. Two masked and hooded gunmen, dressed head to toe in black, sprinted into M Brothers in Auburn, in Sydney 's west, just after 1pm on Monday. Samimjan Azari, 26, was hit in the arm and shoulder, 25-year-old Kali Taiseni was shot in the face and an innocent female shop employee, Yurdagul Aydogu, suffered two gunshot wounds to the torso. Mr Taiseni, an aspiring footballer, was travelling with Azari when the shooting unfolded. While he was hit in the face with a bullet, it has been revealed that shrapnel travelled through to his head to spine. His loved ones were told he may never walk again, reported The Daily Telegraph. Ms Aydogu, 47, remains in a medically induced coma but is expected to make a full recovery. She underwent two round of surgery to remove the bullets from her body. Azari also remains hospitalised for his arm and shoulder injuries. The would-be assassins on Monday unleashed a volley of eight handgun shots as their victims tried to flee out the back, while another man attempted to fend them off with a chair. Police believe Azari was the target of the attack due to his underworld links. Azari has survived three prior attempts on his life - including being shot while he was riding in the back of a ute at Brighton Le Sands - and he was allegedly behind a heist at Condell Park in January. In that incident, he allegedly sent two men to steal illegal tobacco valued at roughly $4.5million from a black market syndicate, but it turned into a violent kidnapping. Three men were allegedly threatened with weapons, tied up, bashed and one of the men had his toe 'partially severed' in the attack which lasted up to half an hour. Officers are believed to have seized the cigarettes, Nine News reported. Police believe this incident is why Azari is wanted dead and Detective Superintendent Jason Box believed he also escaped a planned attack last Friday. 'On this occasion, witnesses sighted a white ute with several occupants with their faces covered, and one occupant was believed to be holding a firearm,' he said. Azari and his associates reportedly provided 'limited information'. CCTV showed the aftermath of the kebab shop shooting, with NSW Ambulance paramedics treating the injured at the scene. 'There was a lot of blood,' he told Daily Mail Australia. 'I was basically putting pressure [on them].' A rapist who preyed on a 15-year-old girl after following her in a town centre has been jailed for nine years. Sadeq Nikzad, 29, targeted the schoolgirl after spotting her walking down a town centre street in Falkirk on October 16 2023. He attempted to strike up a conversation with the teenager, and repeatedly pestered her for her phone number. Nikzad also made sexual comments, before leading the girl into a courtyard where he raped her, prosecutors said. The predator was convicted on March 5 following a trial at the High Court in Edinburgh. Nikzad was given a 12-year extended sentence comprising nine years in custody and three years of supervision upon release when the case called at the High Court in Livingston on Tuesday, the Crown Office said. He was also added to the sex offenders register indefinitely, and given an indefinite non-harassment order banning contact with her. Katrina Parkes, procurator fiscal for High Court sexual offences, said: 'This was an appalling, opportunistic attack on a young girl who should have been safe going about her daily business. 'The victim should be commended for reporting Sadeq Nikzad to the police, ensuring that he has now been held accountable while also protecting others from harm. 'This type of offending will not be tolerated, and I hope this prosecution sends a clear message to men who commit serious acts of sexual violence against women and children. 'I would urge anyone who has experienced similar crime to report it. You will be listened to and supported as we use every tool available in seeking justice.' Detective inspector Forbes Wilson, from the Forth Valley public protection unit, said: 'This was a particularly harrowing attack which was carried out during daylight in a busy town centre.
