Several of the best states for golf might surprise many golfers

USA Today11-07-2025
Most golfers, when asked to envision the best places to tee it up, will quickly picture sun-draped destinations in warmer golf-all-year environments. Florida, California, Arizona, maybe Georgia and the Carolinas. There's nothing wrong with those states and their great golf destinations, of course, and there's something to be said for a good dose of Vitamin D in January.
But golfers shouldn't overlook the states where snow may fall in great quantity for much of the year, but where great layouts await in the summer. Based on Golfweek's Best rankings of elite courses in the U.S., such seasonal locales outrank many of the sun-kissed states etched in players' minds as offering the best golf in the country.
Oregon, Michigan and Wisconsin are perfect examples. Oregon is boosted by the five layouts at the famed Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, but the others also offer elite public-access golf courses that should be on every golfer's radar. It sounds obvious to well-traveled players, but too many golfers would be surprised by how good the golf is in these northern climates.
Using the Golfweek's Best rankings of just the top five public and private courses in each state, we offer a new set of rankings that highlight how good the top courses can be in sometimes overlooked golf states. Pack your bags while the sun is shining.

Looking for the best public-access golf courses in your home state, or planning your next getaway? Golfweek's Best has you covered with our annually updated ranking of the Best Courses You Can Play list for each state, as judged by our nationwide network of raters for 2025. The hundreds of members of our course-ratings panel continually evaluate courses and rate them on 10 criteria on a points basis of 1 through 10. They also file a single, overall rating on each course. Those overall ratings are averaged to produce all our Golfweek's Best course rankings. How we rank courses The courses on this list allow public access in some fashion, be it standard daily green fees, through a resort or by staying at an affiliated hotel. If there's a will, there's a tee time – no membership required. (There are a handful of courses on this list that some players might consider to be traditionally private, but they do allow non-hosted, non-member guest play in some limited form, normally through a local hotel or similar arrangement.) KEY: (m) modern, built in 1960 or after; (c) classic, built before 1960. It's official: 2031 Ryder Cup returning to Spain, to be held at Camiral near Barcelona

Many have wondered when the Ryder Cup would return to Spain after a thrilling match at Valderrama in 1997. We now have the official answer. It was officially announced on Tuesday that the 2031 Ryder Cup will be contested at Camiral in Costa Brava, outside of Barcelona. Spain will become the first country in continental Europe to host more than one Ryder Cup. Golfweek had previously reported (via other sources) that this would likely be the venue. Legendary Spaniard Seve Ballesteros captained the European squad to a 141⁄2 to 131⁄2 victory at Valderrama, with the Americans falling one point short of a comeback in Sunday Singles after trailing by five points coming into the final day. 'Today's announcement not only recognises Camiral as one of Europe's leading venues, but also the considerable contribution Spanish golf has made to the proud history of the Ryder Cup," Guy Kinnings, Chief Executive of the European Tour Group, said in a release. 'The Ryder Cup has grown significantly since Spain last hosted it in 1997. It is one of the world's leading sporting events, which brings significant economic benefits and global exposure to a host region and country, so we could not be happier to be taking it to Costa Brava and Barcelona for the first time, and to Spain for the second time." Camiral, formerly known as PGA Catalunya, is ranked as Spain's top golf and wellness resort. It opened in 1999 and has hosted the DP World Tour's Open de España on three occasions, in 2000, 2009 and 2014, and the Catalunya Championship in 2022, as well as the Final Stage of the DP World Tour's Qualifying School for nine consecutive years from 2008-16.
