School let vicious gang of bullies beat disabled student, 17, to death, stricken dad's lawsuit claims
Jonathan Lewis Sr. claims the November 2023 death of Jonathan Lewis, 17, was the result of widespread negligence on the part of the Clark County School District (CCSD).
Lewis was violently stomped to death outside Rancho High School with his agonizing final moments were captured in now viral-footage.
The harrowing clip which showed him being savagely attacked by a swarm of bullies, four of whom later pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
Jonathan Sr said the school 'should have been on notice' for potential violence at the time in a complaint filed this week in which he accused the school district of negligent hiring, training and supervision.
Jonathan Sr also alleged that the CCSD knew the bullies who attacked his son had a 'pattern of aggressive behavior' and 'should have been on notice of escalating tensions' between them.
Lewis died after he was led to an area around the back of Rancho High School to confront the group over a previous altercation involving a friend.
His father's suit claims that the CCSD knew that the area was a 'gathering spot' for fighting among students.
'Despite this knowledge, CCSD failed to take reasonable steps to supervise students in or near the area, implement preventative and security measures, restrict or exclude access, or notify law enforcement,' the lawsuit alleges.
Jonathan Sr's lawsuit follows a similar court filing from Jonathan's mother Melissa Ready in April, where she also accused the CCSD of wrongful death and negligence.
She also alleged that there had been at least one previous fight between Jonathan and the bullies who killed him, and said the school district 'owed a duty to supervise students, investigate and respond to threats of violence'.
That lawsuit is still ongoing, and CCSD said at the time that it could not comment on pending litigation.
In his complaint, Jonathan Sr pointed out that his son was a special needs student, and said that he should have been provided with 'reasonable supervision and protection' against his bullies.
He accused the CCSD of failing to adequately train its employees on how to control and prevent bullying, and said that Jonathan's death could have been avoided.
CCSD told Fox5 it cannot comment on pending litigation. Daily Mail has contacted CCSD for comment.
Jonathan's family described him as a 'loving, giving, kind, fierce young man', and said he was trying to help a friend when he was savagely beaten.
The mob had reportedly stolen a pair of headphones from his friend days before and stuffed him in a trash can, leading Jonathan to confront the bullies to get the device back.
The savage beating of a white teen by mainly black assailants sparked a media firestorm at the time, but Jonathan Sr told NewsNation that he condemned the implication that race had anything to do with it.
He branded it a 'disgrace to my son's memory'.
Sickening videos of the attack showed a group of teens hitting, kicking and stomping Lewis to the point of unconsciousness.
Footage also showed Lewis being carried to safety by a student and neighbor back to the high school after the savage attack.
Jonathan was hospitalized and placed on life support for a week after suffering 'nonsurvivable head trauma', and his death was ruled a homicide after he was declared brain dead.
Four teens - Dontral Beaver, 16, Damian Hernandez, 18, Treavion Randolph, 16, and Gianni Robinson, 17 - were arrested and charged as adults over the incident.
Their cases were transferred to juvenile court in August 2024 as part of a plea deal, agreeing to admit to manslaughter.
Ready slammed the plea deal at the time, saying: 'There's literally no one being held accountable with true punishment for my son's murder. It's disgusting.'
Jonathan's father said that his heartbreak over losing his son was only helped by knowing that he was helping a friend from bullies in his final moments.
'Jonathan knew the strength of love, that's what we teach in our family,' he told NewsNation at the time.
'Love is the greatest strength and we protect our family members, and have a deep sense of community, and I think that just inspired him to do so.'

Off-duty NYPD officer fatally shoots man on Staten Island pointing fake gun
An off-duty New York Police Department officer fatally shot a man pointing a fake gun at the officer on Friday night on Staten Island, according to law enforcement. At about 8 p.m., a 911 call came in about a man with a gun at the back of a diner, Assistant Chief Melissa Eger, of the NYPD Patrol Borough of Staten Island, said during a news conference. An off-duty officer then spotted the same man with what appeared to be a firearm and told another off-duty officer, said Eger. They told the man to put the firearm down but instead he pointed it at the officers, said Eger, who added that surveillance video captured the events. One officer then fired at the man. The officers 'performed life-saving measures' and then the man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, she said. 'Our officers were confronted with a dangerous and unpredictable situation, and they attempted to de-escalate the situation multiple times,' she said. An imitation firearm was found at the scene, she said. The shooting is being investigated. She said the man has a criminal history, but the details were not immediately clear.

Frantic search for seven-month-old boy kidnapped during attack on mom outside store
A seven-month-old baby is missing after being kidnapped from his mother's truck as she tried to change his diaper outside a California sporting goods store. A frantic search is underway from Emmanuel Haro after he was wrenched from his mother Rebecca Haro, who was knocked unconscious during the attack. Haro was running an errand at a Big 5 retail store in Yucaipa on Thursday when she says a stranger suddenly attacked her from behind as she prepared to change her son's diaper, according to KTLA 5 News. When she regained consciousness with a black eye and no memory of what had happened, she quickly realized her infant son was nowhere to be found. The family is desperately pleading for help in bringing Emmanuel home, as search teams and tracking dogs have yet to uncover any trace of the missing infant. 'I'm begging you please, if you know anything, I'm begging you please bring him back,' Haro begged the public, as reported by CBS News. Haro had been watching her son and stepson at football practice when one of them needed a mouthguard, prompting her to leave the local stadium around 7pm to pick one up - and change Emmanuel's diaper. The mom says the last thing she remembers is someone greeting her in Spanish before she was knocked out in the parking lot. 'I was going to get the diaper and somebody said, "Hola,"' the mother told KTLA News. 'I don't remember anything since. I woke up here on the floor and I didn't see Emmanuel.' With a fresh black eye, the mother was overcome by a wave of crippling fear as she realized Emmanuel was missing. 'I checked all around my truck,' Rebecca told the outlet. 'And I ran into Big 5, and I asked the lady if she saw a baby or someone with a baby. She said no.' 'He's a happy boy,' she added. 'He was a healthy baby, he was crawling, he was kicking, he was playing with his toys. Whoever took our son, please give him back.' Officers with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Office arrived at the scene just before 8pm, where they brought along additional search tools, including K9 scent-tracking dogs to track either the child or a suspect down. 'Everybody came,' Rebecca told KTLA. 'The dogs, the helicopters.' Despite exhaustive search efforts, the family remains both confused and fearful, insisting they have no enemies and cannot understand who would want to harm them. 'Whoever took my son, please return him,' Emmanuel's father, Jake Haro, told the outlet. 'We just want him back. We won't do anything to you. Just give us our son. Keep him safe, don't hurt him, make sure you feed him and change him,' he added in tears. Rebecca echoed her husband's plea, adding: 'If you know anything, please come forward or take him to the cops. Please come and bring my son back. I'm begging you.' On Friday evening, friends and family gathered outside the sporting goods store to begin their own search efforts, armed with flyers they had prepared. Authorities have not released a suspect description, as the case remains under active investigation.
