MUMBAI: Facing a daunting situation where they have to win both their last two league matches to give themselves a chance to qualify for the playoffs, the
Delhi Capitals
are badly missing Australian left-arm pace ace
Mitchell Starc
(14 wickets in 11 matches@26.14), who decided against travelling back to India after his terrifying experience at Dharamsala during the war-like situation.
Starc also has to join the Australian team in its preparations for the

final against South Africa from June 11-15 at Lord's, London.

In Starc's absence, DC suffered a 10-wicket thrashing by Gujarat Titans, as their openers Sai Sudharshan (108 not out) and skipper Shubman Gill (93 not out), raced away to 205 for no loss in 19 overs while chasing 200 in their last match in Delhi on May 18.
Who's that IPL player?
Ahead of his team's do-or-die match against
Mumbai Indians
at the
Wankhede Stadium
on Wednesday, former India pacer and Delhi Capitals' bowling coach Munaf Patel admitted his side will miss Starc in this key match, especially on the normally pace-friendly Wankhede wicket, but there was no point in dwelling over it.
"'We don't have our main bowler in Mitchell Starc and we have to decide who has to bowl with the new ball. It will matter because he is our main fast bowler who (he) bowls at 145 kmph, swings the ball.

Obviously, coming off that loss (to GT), here at the Wankhede where the ball does move (off the surface) and there is bounce, there has been a lot of discussion on it. It matters 100 per cent, but when there is no option, you have to think of other alternatives, you cannot get stuck thinking 'oh he is not there now, what will happen?'.
You have to move ahead with whatever (players) you have and ensure they perform," Munaf said on Tuesday.
Patel revealed that DC's in-form 'keeper-batter
KL Rahul
, who is just seven short of the 500-run mark in this IPL and is coming into this game after an unbeaten century against GT in the last outing, suggested to the team management that he would switch to the opening slot to help the team's cause, as Australian opener Jake Fraser-McGurk didn't return for the rest of the tournament. "He is batting extraordinarily, he has scored runs in all positions.
He puts his hand up whenever the team is in need.
He only suggested that he would open the innings because the opening pair wasn't settling down and went on to make a hundred," Patel praised.

IPL extends extra time for matches by one hour
Meanwhile, in order to counter the threat of rain spoiling the rest of
IPL 2025
, the BCCI has extended the extra time stipulated for an IPL match by an hour with "immediate effect." All IPL games from Tuesday night will have an extra waiting period of 120 minutes, instead of the extra hour earlier.
"Obviously the weather has been threatening most of the games and it's a decision that they've collectively taken. If it helps, it helps, but if you have serious rain, I don't know whether the extra hours are going to help. But as long as we can get a game with the extension... Everyone wants to play a game of cricket rather than not play," Mumbai Indians head coach
Mahela Jayawardene
said.
Rahul hit in the nets, but is 'fine'
Delhi Capitals' KL Rahul suffered a minor injury scare in the nets when he was hit by a delivery on his right knee by DC seamer Mukesh Kumar. Visibly in pain, Rahul walked off the nets after being struck by the ball, but sources in DC informed that the batter was "fine."

Mark Boucher handpicks two youngsters who can be key to SA's success in WTC final

New Delhi [India], June 7 (ANI): Former Proteas head coach Mark Boucher believes that if South Africa can gun down the reigning World Test Champions, Australia, it could mark the beginning of a new era. He also identified two youngsters who could be the key to their success in the upcoming final at Lord's. South Africa earned a spot in the WTC final after winning seven consecutive Tests and finished at the top of the table standings. After getting a shot at ending their trophy drought, South Africa found itself surrounded by criticism, considering they had just played 12 fixtures to fight for the WTC mace. 'A lot of people have criticised South Africa, which is not really fair. You play what's in front of you, and with all due respect, the sides that we've played against, we probably should have beaten, and we've done that. So we find ourselves in a final. But I wouldn't say that it has got the crowds going in our country,' Boucher told ESPNcricinfo during the IPL. 'Everyone's very excited about it now as the opportunity arises, a lot of people are going to travel over to London, spend all their Rands and go watch what should be a good match. If we win it, I think then that could be the turnaround for Test cricket in our country,' he added. During the buildup to the high-stakes contest, fans and many former cricketers deemed Australia the on-paper favourites. After years of faltering in the semi-finals of the ICC events, Boucher believes it is time to get rid of the 'chokers' tag. 'We're playing for a trophy, so I guess a lot of people are saying no [we can't win], but I think it's a different feel in Test match cricket,' he said. 'It's played over a longer period of time and you've just got to win big moments in the game as well. Yes, there will be that tag [chokers] that gets thrown our way until we win a trophy,' he said. 'You're not going to get rid of the tag. Is it deserving on these youngsters coming through? No, it's almost like they're carrying the burden of what happened in previous years, which is always going to be tough on them, but they're the ones in control of their futures at the moment,' he added. For Boucher, South Africa youngsters Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs are two youngsters who could be the key to their success in the pulsating contest that kicks off on Wednesday. 'Ryan Rickelton has been playing nicely for Mumbai Indians (MI) and he was actually on the tour that we went to England [in 2022] as well. He's actually played quite a few games in England as well, so he'll know the conditions,' Boucher said. 'And Tristan Stubbs has come back and played a lot of domestic cricket and basically forced his way into the Test side because of the runs that he's got. On paper, Australia will probably feel that they've got a better batting line-up than what we have, but have we got the attitude to go out there and in a one-off game, just leave it all out there? Absolutely,' he added. South Africa squad: Tony de Zorzi, Ryan Rickelton, Aiden Markram, Temba Bavuma (c), David Bedingham, Tristan Stubbs, Kyle Verreynne, Wiaan Mulder, Marco Jansen, Corbin Bosch, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Dane Paterson, Keshav Maharaj, Senuran Muthusamy. Australia squad: Usman Khawaja, Sam Konstas, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Alex Carey, Josh Inglis, Cameron Green, Beau Webster, Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Scott Boland, Nathan Lyon, Matt Kuhnemann. Travelling reserve: Brendan Doggett. (ANI)

Karnataka CM increases compensation for Bengaluru stampede victims' families to Rs 25 lakh each

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 7 (ANI): Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has ordered an increase in the compensation announced for the families of those who died in the Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede in Bengaluru to Rs 25 lakh each. Earlier, the government had announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi demanded that CM Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar should 'resign right now' in connection with the June 4 stampede near Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium that claimed 11 lives and left dozens injured. Joshi told reporters, 'The state government should bear moral responsibility. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar should not continue on his position even for a moment. CM and Deputy CM should resign right now.' Earlier, top senior officials of Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), Secretary A Shankar and Treasurer ES Jairam, tendered their resignations, taking 'moral responsibility' for the stampede that took place near M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday ahead of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team's felicitation after winning their Indian Premier League (IPL) title by defeating Punjab Kings (PBKS) in a tight final on Tuesday. Meanwhile, a Bengaluru Sessions Court on Friday remanded four individuals, including senior Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) official Nikhil Sosale and three event managers, to 14 days of judicial custody in connection with the stampede. They were arrested in a joint operation by the Cubbon Park police and the Central Crime Branch (CCB) at Kempegowda International Airport in the early hours of June 6 (Friday). Earlier in the day, the Karnataka High Court granted interim relief to the office bearers of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), who had approached the court seeking the quashing of the FIR registered against them in connection with the an interim order, the court directed the state police not to take any coercive action against them until further orders. The High Court adjourned the case to June 9. KSCA President Raghu Ram Bhat, Secretary A Shankar, Treasurer ES Jairam, and other KSCA office bearers moved the High Court seeking to quash the FIR. Nikhil Sosale also approached the High Court to challenge his arrest. He claimed that he was arrested without any materials and even before the police had conducted a preliminary enquiry. He has thus sought to declare his arrest as illegal. On Thursday, the Bengaluru police registered an FIR against the RCB franchise, DNA Entertainment Pvt. Ltd., an event management company, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) for culpable homicide, illegal assembly, and other serious charges. A day after the stampede , the Karnataka police suspended multiple IPS officers, including the Bengaluru city police Commissioner, B Dayananda. Apart from Dayananda, Additional Commissioner of Police Vikash Kumar Vikash, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Shekhar HT, Assistant Commissioner of Police Balakrishna and Cubbon Park Police Inspector Girish AK were also suspended with immediate effect. Bengaluru stampede: KSCA Secretary, Treasurer resign after emergency meeting

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 7 (ANI): Two top Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) officials -- secretary A Shankar and treasurer ES Jairam -- resigned from their posts during an emergency managing committee meeting held on Saturday, accepting 'moral responsibility' for stampede near M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The incident occurred during celebrations following Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) maiden IPL title win and claimed 11 lives and left dozens injured. KSCA President Raghuram Bhat confirmed the development, saying that the resignations were discussed and accepted during an emergency meeting on Saturday. 'I had called an emergency managing committee meeting. Two of our members -- the secretary and treasurer -- have resigned on moral grounds. The committee has accepted their resignations. So far, nothing has come in. When the inquiry takes place, we have already told the government and the High Court that we will never shy away from anything that is there. We are ready to cooperate with the investigation,' Bhat told reporters. Speaking to ANI later, the KSCA said, 'The two resignation letters have been accepted by the managing committee. Today, it was important to accept the resignations as it has already come into the public domain.' The stampede occurred during the celebrations following Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title win on Wednesday, June 4. The incident sparked widespread concern regarding crowd management and safety arrangements at major public events. The stampede left 11 people dead and several others injured. Communicating to KSCA on Friday night, both Shankar and Jairam wrote as quoted by ESPNCricinfo, 'Due to the unforeseen and unfortunate events that have unfolded in the last two days, and though our role was very limited, but owing moral responsibility, we wish to state that last night we have tendered our resignation to our respective posts as secretary and treasurer of the KSCA.' The Bengaluru Police also filed a first information report (FIR) against the popular IPL franchise on Thursday, as per ESPNCricinfo. The police have said that RCB was not given permission to conduct the event at the stadium. RCB has been listed as the first accused in the FIR, along with DNA Entertainment, the franchise's event partners, and the KSCA, which is in control of the stadium. On Friday, the cops also confirmed the arrest of RCB's marketing and revenue head Nikhil Sosale, while acting on directives of newly appointed police commissioner SK Singh, who took over after his predecessor was removed by the chief minister Siddaramaiah after the incident. Later that day, a writ petition was filed by KSCA, arguing that the FIR against them was a move made under pressure of state government by the police and hence a 'knee-jerk' reaction. KSCA said that the stampede was caused due to an unexpected crowd surge and no intent or motive could be attributed to the petitioners. They also stressed that the crowd management was a responsibility which lied with the franchise's management, event organisers and the police. The council defending the state's cricket governing body also raised concerns about Sosale's arrest, claiming that it indicated a targeted approach. Sosale also approached the Karnataka High Court and challenged his arrest, as per Bar and Bench, an Indian legal news platform. RCB is yet to issue an official statement on Sosale's arrest, though on Thursday, they announced compensation worth Rs 10 lakh for the family of each deceased and also pledged to cover the medical expenses of those who sustained injuries.
