Feeling blue? ‘Find Your Happy' at the 135th annual Orange County Fair

If you find yourself with a case of the summertime blues, there's perhaps no better place to 'Find Your Happy' than this year's Orange County Fair, which returns to the Costa Mesa fairgrounds on Friday.
Organizers of this year's 135th annual celebration have been busy planning the start of the big show, prepping staging areas on the 150-acre site for the more than 1 million visitors anticipated to walk through the gates each Wednesday through Sunday before the fair closes on Aug. 17.
'There are trucks parked everywhere, and they're unloading the rides. Concessionaires are rolling trailers in and putting up all the big signs,' OC Fair & Event Center spokeswoman Terry Moore said in a catch-up session Thursday.
'At Centennial Farm, everything's getting spruced up and looking good. I'm seeing 4-H folks and FFA kids start to get their stuff set up. Kids raise these animals and it's an enormous amount of work and there's a lot of expense but you learn a ton. And it's one of those things you'll find only at the county fair.'
Attendance at this year's event will be capped at roughly 50,000 visitors per day, but those who pay for entry to a concert at the Pacific Amphitheater or other ticketed event will be able to access the fair for the entire day, even on days already deemed 'sold out.'
Last year, officials reported more than 1.13 million guests visited the fairground, up more than 81,000 people compared to 2023, with 12 of the fair's 23 days exceeding the cap and nine days selling out.
More than 130,000 fairgoers attended concerts at the amphitheater, while 32,000 guests enjoyed performances at the Hangar and some 30,000 audience members partook in high-octane events at the Action Sports Arena, OCFEC estimates.
Area residents stunned in the competition and display categories — from table settings and personal collections to handicrafts and culinary entries — bringing in 16,259 submissions and netting a collective $38,275 in prize money.
This year, eager to stay on top of the latest foodie trends, concession stand operators are offering some new and unique treats, such as nopales tacos, Dubai chocolate brownies at Mom's Bakeshoppe, tres leches cinnamon rolls at Country Fair Cinnamon Rolls and deep-fried apple pie a la mode at Tom's Puffs & Pie.
Moore said even employees at the fairgrounds are looking forward to the coming attractions, along with the return of culinary novelties that hit the mark last year.
'A surprising one for me was the bacon cotton candy on a smoked pork belly stick,' she said of a creation concocted at the stand Bacon Nation. 'They have bacon-flavored cotton candy on top of this pork belly stick, then put bacon chunks into it — it's a sweet and savory treat.'
Fairgoers looking for a little bit of everything can once more enjoy a special Taste of the Fair every day until 4 p.m., where smaller samples are available at certain vendors for just $5.
Ridesharing and public transit are encouraged, and parking costs $15 daily. General admission is $13 for adults on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and $15 Fridays through Sundays. Tickets cost $9 for those over 60 and children aged 6 to 12, while kids 5 and under are free.
Fair hours are from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays and from 11 a.m. to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays at the Orange County Fairgrounds, 88 Fair Drive, Costa Mesa. For more, visit ocfair.com.

'Happy Gilmore 2' shoots up the charts, earns Netflix's biggest opening weekend numbers

Adam Sandler's big swing at Netflix has paid off. "Happy Gilmore 2" snagged 91.9 million minutes watched in its first weekend, per Netflix's internal data. This amounts to 46.7 million views between July 25 and 27, according to the streamer's calculations. This viewership gives Sandler's star-studded sequel bragging rights for having the biggest U.S. opening weekend of all time for a Netflix movie, a spokesperson for the streamer confirmed to USA TODAY on July 30. "Happy Gilmore 2" is currently in the No. 1 position for movies streamed worldwide. Variety was first to report the news. In the sequel, co-written by Sandler, Happy has left golf behind after a tragic accident years ago. When he needs to raise $300,000 to send his daughter, Vienna (Sunny Sandler), to a prestigious ballet school in Paris, Happy hits the links again and runs into old pal Shooter McGavin. Happy also teams up with the who's who of the PGA Tour – including Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Collin Morikawa – to save traditional golf when an energy drink mogul (Benny Safdie) tries to popularize a more extreme version of the sport. The number of cameos from stars like Bad Bunny (who was billed as Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio and had decent screen time to flex his acting chops), Eminem, Kid Cudi and Travis Kelce even shocked Julie Bowen, who plays Happy's wife, Virginia. "The call sheet was coded. It did not have anybody's names on it and there were 135 different cast members," she told USA TODAY. "I would see Polaroids in the hair and makeup trailer and I saw a person that no one's mentioned yet. And I'm like, 'When was he here?!' (They'd say) 'He's Newscaster No. 4.' And I'm like, 'Are you kidding me?'" Christopher McDonald, who plays Happy's one-time nemesis Shooter, also found himself starstruck. "I have known a few of these golf legends and legends-in-training. But seeing them one-on-one, it's like: 'Oh, my God, that's Rory McIlroy. That's Bryson DeChambeau. That's Scottie Scheffler.' It was mind-blowing for me," he told USA TODAY. "And I came in on my days off just to hang out with them." Contributing: Brian Truitt, USA TODAY

Birmingham gives an emotional farewell to Ozzy Osbourne as tearful family lead tributes

BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) — Ozzy Osbourne returned to the 'home of metal' for the last time on Wednesday as an emotional Birmingham honored one of its most cherished sons. Thousands of Black Sabbath fans paid their respects to the band's frontman as his hearse made its way through the city center followed by his tearful wife and children. The hearse carrying Osbourne, who died last Tuesday at the age of 76 , went down Broad Street, one of the city's major thoroughfare, to the Black Sabbath bench, which was unveiled on the Broad Street canal bridge in 2019. 'Ozzy, Ozzy, Ozzy, oi, oi, oi,' fans screamed. Six vehicles carrying the Osbourne family followed the hearse, accompanied by police motorcycle riders and a police car. The family emerged briefly to inspect the array of tributes, with his wife of 43 years, Sharon, visibly moved and wiping away tears. And long after the hearse had moved on for the private funeral, the city, which has embraced its reputation as the citadel of heavy metal, was pounding to the beat of Black Sabbath. It was in Birmingham, where he grew up, that the world-conquering heavy metal band was formed in 1968. Osbourne embraced the city in central England as much as it embraced him, as was evident on the streets. Long-time fan Antony Hunt said it has been an 'emotional' day and that he wanted to be in the city to pay his respects. 'What's amazing is there's so many, such a wide variety of age groups, from little, little children, teenagers to people in their 60s, 70s, so it's great to see that,' he said. Katie Brazier, head of events at Birmingham City Council, said Osbourne meant 'everything' to the city. 'He never forgot where he came from,' she said. 'You could still hear that Brummie accent wherever he was, you know, I think some people have hidden away from the fact that they are from Birmingham and they've got that accent but he kept it all the way through.' Osbourne and his Black Sabbath bandmates — Terence Butler, Tony Iommi and Bill Ward — were recently awarded the Freedom of the City in recognition of their services to Birmingham. Black Sabbath's story began in Birmingham in 1968 when the four original members were looking to escape a life of factory work. Without doubt, the sound and fury of heavy metal had its roots in the city's manufacturing heritage. Osbourne never forgot his working-class roots. The band has been widely credited with defining and popularizing the sound of heavy metal — aggressive, but full of melodies. Osbourne was Black Sabbath's frontman during its peak period in the 1970s. His antics, on and off stage, were legendary, and often fueled by drink and drugs. He was widely known as the 'Prince of Darkness.' The band's eponymous debut album in 1970 made the U.K. top 10 and paved the way for a string of hit albums, including 1971's 'Master of Reality' and 'Vol. 4' a year later. It went on to become one of the most influential and successful metal bands of all time, selling more than 75 million albums worldwide. At the final show on July 5, 42,000 fans watched the band perform for the first time in 20 years at Villa Park, home of the city's biggest soccer club, Aston Villa, with Osbourne seated on a black throne. Osbourne had been in poor health in recent years, especially after being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2019. Osbourne, who also had a successful solo career, found a new legion of fans in the early 2000s reality show 'The Osbournes' in which he starred alongside Sharon and two youngest children, Kelly and Jack. ___ Pylas contributed from London.
