(Reuters) -Manuel Caceres, the drum-pounding Spanish football superfan known worldwide as "Manolo el del Bombo", died on Thursday at the age of 76, silencing the rhythmic heartbeat that had accompanied Spanish football for overfour decades.
With his trademark oversized Basque beret and red number 12 shirt, Caceres became as much a fixture at Spanish matches as the players themselves - a percussive national treasure whose relentless drumming provided La Roja's unofficial soundtrack.
"My aim is to retire after 12 World Cups, which will make me 77, if Spain qualify for all of them. I'll be there even if I have to go with a walking stick," the Spanish fan told Reuters at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
His love affair with the team began when he first travelled abroad to watch Spain play in Cyprus in 1979. The 1982 World Cup on home soil transformed him from a passionate supporter into a cultural phenomenon, with his drum becoming inextricably linked to the Spanish footballing identity.
Caceres ultimately fell two tournaments short of his ambitious goal, attending a total of 10 World Cups but missing the 2022 showpiece in Qatar. His final appearance came at Valencia's Mestalla stadium during the Nations League quarter-final against the Netherlands in March.
"I've given up everything for football - my businesses and everything - but I'm still alive. I'm happy, I can follow Spain wherever I go. What more could I ask for?" he told Reuters at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Such was his fame that the Spanish federation covered his travel and accommodation during the showpiece in Russia, recognising a man whose celebrity often rivalled the players' themselves.
"One of our most loyal fans has passed away, someone who was always with us through thick and thin. We know you'll keep rocking our hearts. Rest in peace, Manolo," the Spanish team wrote on X.
Caceres, who ran a bar opposite the Mestalla stadium for more than 30 years, made big personal and financial sacrifices in service to what he called the great passion of his life: his national team.

Rugby-Springboks forced into late bench replacement ahead of Australia clash

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) -South Africa have been forced into a late change to their bench for Saturday's opening Rugby Championship test against Australia at Ellis Park in Johannesburg with prop Boan Venter replacing the injured Jan-Hendrik Wessels. Wessels was injured in training on Wednesday and has not recovered in time and will be replaced by Venter, who made his Springboks debut against Georgia last month. Venter joins fellow prop Asenathi Ntlabakanye and experienced hooker Bongi Mbonambi as the front row replacements, with South Africa opting for a 5-3 split between forwards and backs on the bench, diminishing the effectiveness of their so-called 'Bomb Squad' of forward replacements. Updated South Africa team: 15–Aphelele Fassi, 14–Edwill van der Merwe, 13–Jesse Kriel, 12–Andre Esterhuizen, 11–Kurt-Lee Arendse, 10–Manie Libbok, 9–Grant Williams, 8–Siya Kolisi (captain), 7–Pieter-Steph du Toit, 6–Marco van Staden, 5–Lood de Jager, 4–Eben Etzebeth, 3–Wilco Louw, 2–Malcolm Marx, 1–Ox Nche Replacements: 16–Bongi Mbonambi, 17–Boan Venter, 18–Asenathi Ntlabakanye, 19–Franco Mostert, 20–Kwagga Smith, 21–Cobus Reinach, 22–Canan Moodie, 23–Damian Willemse. Rugby-Proud All Black Kirifi keen to sink teeth into Argentina

(Reuters) -Late-blooming flanker Du'Plessis Kirifi is glad the fuss over his test debut is receding in the background so he can focus on cementing his spot in New Zealand's back row in the Rugby Championship. The Hurricanes hard-man soaked up his first All Blacks minutes off the bench against France in Dunedin last month and finished the series with a full match in Hamilton as a late replacement for the starting openside Luke Jacobson. He has retained the All Blacks' number seven jersey for the first test against Argentina in Cordoba on Saturday, beating out a raft of quality loose forwards, including Samipeni Finau, who was named in the reserves. "It's obviously another proud moment, officially being named to start for the first time," Kirifi told reporters in a video call on Friday. "But I'm kind of glad that the first couple of tests are over and all the noise around me becoming an All Black is behind me. "Now I can just focus on training hard and playing well." Named after former South Africa captain Morne du Plessis by a rugby-loving dad, 28-year-old Kirifi has waited a long time for his moment in test rugby. Five years ago he was called up to Ian Foster's All Blacks squad as injury cover but he never got to pull on a jersey. Current coach Scott Robertson also gave him a call-up during the Northern Hemisphere tour last year, but he missed out on selection again. While processing the disappointment, Kirifi flirted with a move overseas to take up a "juicy deal" with a Japanese club which would have meant shelving his test rugby ambitions. Instead, he re-signed with the Hurricanes and New Zealand Rugby in March after his father urged him to give the All Blacks one more crack. Little wonder there were warm cheers when Kirifi took the field in Dunedin and finished his victorious All Blacks debut with a blood-soaked collar from a cut to his ear. Kirifi said post-match he would give the jersey, unwashed, to his father to hang in the hallway of the family home. Starting alongside enforcer Ardie Savea on Saturday, Kirifi will be ready to spill more blood for New Zealand against a ferocious Argentina back row featuring Marcos Kremer and Pablo Matera. "We're pretty aware of the challenge that's in front of us and the environment that we're walking into over the next couple of weeks," he said. "We're really looking forward to sinking our teeth into some pretty solid opposition." (Reporting by Ian Ransom in Melbourne; Editing by Christian Schmollinger)

Soccer-Silva laments Fulham's 'passive' transfer activity as Premier League opener nears

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Premier League - Fulham v Manchester City - Craven Cottage, London, Britain - May 25, 2025 Fulham manager Marco Silva before the match Action Images via Reuters/Andrew Couldridge/File Photo (Reuters) -Fulham manager Marco Silva has criticised the club's "passive" approach in the close-season transfer window, with only one signing secured ahead of their Premier League opener against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday. Fulham, who finished 11th last season after flirting with European qualification, have so far signed goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte from French side Montpellier on a free transfer. Arsenal winger Reiss Nelson, who spent last season on loan at Craven Cottage, has been linked with a move to Fulham, while the West London club's Brazilian forward Rodrigo Muniz has reportedly attracted interest from Italian side Atalanta. "It's not an ideal scenario. You used the word 'quiet' — I have to say we've been too passive. If you asked me if I expected it, I'd say of course not. But it is what it is, it's the market," Silva told reporters on Thursday. "It's important we didn't get injuries during pre-season because, in some positions, we are very short on numbers. We want to at least have a squad and players on the bench to play a Premier League game and meet the demands the league asks of you. "It's unexpected, even if it's normal for Fulham to sign players late. I don't go in that direction — I know what we want, and the plan was there." Muniz, who has scored 26 goals in 97 appearances for Fulham since joining in 2021, remains part of Silva's plans for the Brighton match despite speculation about his future. "It is not for me to comment on any type of offers, but he is going to be in contention for the Brighton game. Rodrigo knows what I think about him and how important he is," Silva said of the 24-year-old Muniz. Fulham visit Brighton before hosting Manchester United on August 24. With the transfer window set to close on September 1 for Premier League clubs, Silva is hopeful of bolstering his squad before the deadline day. "Let's hope we can do something before the end of the month, because right now it doesn't make sense for us to look toward the Brighton game or even the Man Utd game, as we've left it very late to reinforce the positions we need," Silva said.
