Heritage Grocers' CEO exits
Dive Brief:
Heritage Grocers Group announced Thursday that Suzy Monford has stepped down as board chair and CEO to 'pursue other opportunities.' Monford joined the company as chief executive at the end of last year.
The grocery company, which oversees several Hispanic chains, named David Hirz, who most recently served as president and CEO of Smart & Final, as chair of the company board.
The company also created an Office of the CEO to guide the company as it searches for a replacement. The group is comprised of senior leaders, including its COO and CFO as well as the CEO of Tony's Fresh Market.
Dive Insight:
Monford served a short stint as chief executive at Heritage Grocers Group, which oversees more than 100 stores across the Cardenas Markets, El Rancho Supermercado, Tony's Fresh Market and Los Altos Ranch Market banners.
During her roughly nine months at the helm, Heritage made numerous executive appointments and strategic adjustments to help the company grow and evolve. This included creating a chief transformation officer role to oversee a new department focused on improving e-commerce, retail media, pricing and other areas. Heritage also named a new CFO earlier this year and promoted veterans from H-E-B and Kroger to leadership positions in merchandising and marketing, respectively.
Heritage Grocers also took strides during Monford's tenure to refine its technology, including automating parts of its retail planning and supply chain management systems.
Monford previously served as CEO of PCC Community Markets and Andronico's Community Markets and has held executive roles with Kroger, H-E-B and Australia's Woolworths Group, according to her LinkedIn profile. She declined to comment when asked about her future plans.
As it searches for a new leader, Heritage will look to members of its Office of the CEO group to steer the company. Those members are:
Prabash Coswatte, chief operating officer at Heritage Grocers
Leticia Espinoza, chief administrative officer and general counsel at Heritage Grocers
Matthew Holt, CFO at Heritage Grocers
Frank Ingraffia, chief transformation officer at Heritage Grocers and CEO at Tony's Fresh Market.
Hirz, meanwhile, brings more than four decades of experience leading grocery companies, including more than 12 years as president and CEO of Smart & Final, according to his LinkedIn profile. Hirz, who has been on Heritage's board for the past year, has also served as president of Food 4 Less and Ralphs. He will provide oversight and offer guidance to the Office of the CEO, according to Thursday's announcement.
'Throughout my time on Heritage's Board, I have seen firsthand the strength of Heritage's value proposition and customer loyalty across our banners,' Hirz said in a statement. 'We have a unique ability to serve communities with authenticity – and we're committed to carrying that forward.

AI Startup ChatBlu Secures $500K in Pre-Seed Funding to Automate Inventory for Online Retailers
ChatBlu has raised $500,000 in pre-seed funding to launch an autonomous AI agent that automates inventory management across platforms for multi-platform e-commerce. Founded by 20-year-olds Kristian Lukauskis and Alexander Dillon, the startup is backed by Matador VC and angels from Google and Courtesy of ChatBlu LONDON, Aug. 19, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- ChatBlu, a rising artificial intelligence startup founded by Kristian Lukauskis of Miami and Alexander Dillon of London, has announced the close of a $500,000 pre-seed funding round. The company is building an autonomous AI agent designed to eliminate manual inventory management for e-commerce sellers operating across multiple platforms. The round was led by Matador Venture Capital, a firm known for backing several Y Combinator X25 companies. It included participation from angel investors associated with Google and Amazon Web Services. The funding will support ChatBlu's product development and go-to-market rollout, which is planned for September 2025. ChatBlu was incorporated in April 2025 and aims to solve a widespread pain point in digital commerce: syncing listings, managing stock, and adjusting pricing across storefronts like Shopify, Amazon, Etsy, and WooCommerce. By enabling store owners to issue simple, natural-language commands, the AI agent executes all backend tasks autonomously across channels. 'E-commerce has evolved, but inventory management hasn't kept up.' Said Dillon, 'ChatBlu is here to change that and set a new standard for how stores operate across platforms.' Industry research estimates that poor inventory coordination results in $1.8 trillion in lost revenue for retailers every year. ChatBlu's team believes their product can help merchants increase conversion rates by up to 20 percent through intelligent listing optimization and real-time inventory control. The company was developed within the 2024–2025 cohort of the Genoa Entrepreneurship School, a European accelerator program that boasts a 75 percent funding success rate. Supported by mentors such as Douglas Leone of Sequoia Capital, Genoa provides students with access to capital and global networks. ChatBlu's technical development is led by CTO Sairam Vangapally, a former Amazon and Shutterfly engineer. Additional team members bring experience from Apple, Meta, Adidas, and Xbox. ChatBlu will initially serve English-speaking markets, with expansion into the Hispanic e-commerce sector planned for 2026. SpartanNash expands Hispanic grocery banner to new state
This story was originally published on Grocery Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Grocery Dive newsletter. SpartanNash is growing its Hispanic-focused grocery banner, Supermercado Nuestra Familia. The company announced Monday plans to open its fifth store under the banner in Topeka, Kansas, in November. The nearly 50,000-square-foot store will be located at the corner of 29th Street and California Avenue. This will mark the first Supermercado Nuestra Familia in Kansas. Currently, the banner's stores are located in Omaha, Nebraska, with the most recent opening in May. "The brand-new location reflects the tastes and traditions of Topeka's vibrant Hispanic community. Shoppers will enjoy exceptional service from our Associates and a terrific assortment of authentic Hispanic grocery items," SpartanNash Senior Vice President and Chief Retail Officer Djouma Barry said in the announcement. Supermercado Nuestra Familia stores each feature aguas frescas and horchata; a full-service carniceria; freshly made corn and flour tortillas; handmade tamales and enchiladas; and tres leches cakes, gelatins and flans made daily. In May, SpartanNash CEO Tony Sarsam told investors that the company planned to open two or three more stores under the Supermercado Nuestra Familia banner in the Midwest later this year, with more coming in the first quarter of 2026. SpartanNash runs nearly 200 brick-and-mortar grocery stores, primarily under the Family Fare, Martin's Super Markets and D&W Fresh Market banners. During SpartanNash's most recent quarter, the company's retail sales rose by almost 13% while wholesale sales decreased by 3%, continuing the trend of growth in its retail division outpacing its larger wholesale unit. Supermarcado Nuestra Familia is growing at a time when grocers are turning to new store formats and private brands to cater to Hispanic shoppers. Last year, Save A Lot launched Ahorra Mucho, a new discount store catering specifically to Hispanic shoppers, and Big Y expanded its Hispanic grocery section when remodeling a store in West Springfield, Massachusetts.
