‘Pure heart and determination' – Kerry fans rejoice after epic display to land the Kingdom's 39th All-Ireland

It was a rousing opening quarter display from the Kingdom that set the tone for their demolition of Donegal, and with talismanic performances from David Clifford and Gavin White, among others, Kerry cruised to All-Ireland glory.
It was the names of the Clifford brothers, Paudie and David, along with White, that spewed from fans' mouths as they streamed out on to Jones' Road in delight after Kerry's 10-point win over Donegal.
Michael Harmond from Ardfert, Co Kerry, said: 'It was tense enough, but Kerry were almost always in third gear and eventually they pulled away at the end.'
Despite criticism of Kerry, which made the team feel 'disrespected', according to David Clifford, Mr Harmond never doubted them. 'I think it was always coming,' he said.
David Clifford was a standout player for me
'We played more football, they took so long, almost two to three minutes each time to get a score, I felt.
'Even when they were losing with a few minutes to go, they were taking that much time. We were more clinical, I thought.
'David Clifford was a standout player for me and he was marked very well.'
Similarly unyielding in support was Brendan Reardon, who watched the match with his daughter Aoibhín. 'It was an absolutely fantastic performance, they were brilliant in the first half and kept on going in the second,' he said.
The pair travelled from Beaufort for the final, a first for Aoibhín, with Mr Reardon saying that she was Kerry's 'lucky charm'.
'It took pure heart and determination, they kept going and never gave up even when Donegal came back in the second half, Kerry kept going,' he said.

We are lost for words now and roll on the celebrations
'Gavin White and Paudie Clifford were absolutely unbelievable.
'We just couldn't be happier. We are lost for words now and roll on the celebrations.'
Fandom in sport comes in all shapes and sizes and a woman who has only indirect ties to the Kerry team, but was nonetheless ecstatic, was Deirdre Brady from Co Louth.
Sporting a Palestine GAA jersey, Ms Brady said: 'My husband is from Cork but his grandparents are from Kerry. He's a big Kerry supporter, so are my sons.
'I thought Kerry came in very strong in the first quarter and in the second quarter Donegal came back but Kerry had enough of a buffer to keep going, it was a great game.'
Donegal did indeed come back in the second half with a Michael Murphy-led charge at Kerry, but they could never get the gap below four points and despite the urgings of Donegal manager Jim McGuinness, Kerry found another gear when it mattered.
After the match, Jack O'Connor indicated that he will step aside as Kerry manager, after watching Kerry lift the most coveted trophy in football five times as manager. 'You can't beat panel spirit. We said what happened to Cork last week wouldn't happen to us. It's the stuff of dreams. I'm delighted for them all, a massive team effort, backroom effort, panel effort,' he said.
It was a tough one to take but we'll regroup
It was to be an uneasy journey home for boyfriend and girlfriend, Wendy Eadie and Conor McGinn, who were wrestling with both delight and disappointment while milling out of Croke Park.
Donegal supporter Mr McGinn, from Creeslough, Donegal, said he was 'sickened' by the match while Ms Eadie, whose family is from Killarney, expressed her delight.
'It was a tough one to take but we'll regroup,' Mr McGinn said. '[David] Clifford got on very well; they kept [Michael] Murphy very quiet.
'They were very strong around the midfield. Obviously with Clifford there was a lot more threat for scoring two-pointers, and we didn't really pose that threat.'
Donegal's lacklustre offensive was a hot topic, with another Donegal supporter, Anthony McBride, from Downings pointing to the Kingdom clinching the title by nullifying their threats.
'I can't really complain, I don't think Donegal played to their usual level. I am very disappointed, we'll come back next year,' he said.

Joe Brolly responds to subtle jibe by Paudie Clifford after Kerry proved him wrong in All-Ireland final

JOE Brolly has laughed off Paudie Clifford's pointed response to him effectively calling Kerry a one-man team. 2 The 27-year-old starred as Kerry beat Donegal 1-26 to 0-19 2 Brolly has been a heavy critic of Jack O'Connor's side all Championship The columnist and podcaster had scrutinised the Kerry team after their In his 'So there it is. 'Like, Joe O'Connor, the turnovers, winning balls, scoring, Jason Foley, Brian Ó Beaglaioch, Gavin White – I'm only naming a few. I see the work that they put in every day. 'To be called a one-man team then, it's nearly like it's disrespectful. It's kind of personal. I suppose that's the angle we were coming from." Most read in GAA Football The Fossa man's indirect reaction to Brolly's remarks had sparked a response from the 1993 All-Ireland winner. On his David Clifford's son adorably hijacks RTE interview after dad dominates All-Ireland final "If you'd been with me coming out of Croke Park on Sunday, the Kerry people were roaring and shouting, 'Whatcha think of that!' This is all interest, it's all part of the game." Not even the 'one-man' in the 'one-man team' was safe from a wisecrack from Brolly. The two-time All-Star joked: "What do you do with Superman? I wrote it in my column this morning, I had to laugh when I read it again. After he had got his ninth point, it was such an amazing thing to happen. "He was sent clean through on goals, goes round the goalkeeper. Everybody was in the air already and he missed. "I wrote it was like Superman dropping a woman who had fallen from the top of a skyscraper. He looked down at his foot, mystified." The former RTÉ pundit was however complimentary of David Clifford as he has now finally buried the 'can he do it in an All-Ireland final?' myth. Brolly added: "That is such an essential point when it comes to greatness. The first time I really appreciated that was how he revelled in his Fossa teammates. "He revelled in it, and never presented as better than them or as being higher up in the pecking order. He just absolutely blended in. "That humility is his most important quality. From the point of view of longevity with Kerry, from the point of view of his teammates being inspired by him all the time."

Casey: Hunger as strong as ever for veteran Dublin players

Dublin manager Paul Casey believes the hunger within his side is as strong as ever as they prepare for battle with Meath in Sunday's TG4 Ladies Football Championship final at Croke Park. The Dubs, winners of five of the last eight editions of the competition, most recently two years ago, take on the Royals in an all-Leinster battle that will see many previous winners take to the field at Headquarters. Meath came out on top in the last final between the sides in 2021 and followed it up a year later against Kerry, so pedigree is not a question when it comes to this decider. However, Casey feels the veterans of his team remain as ambitious as the first day they donned the blue shirt. Speaking to RTÉ Sport, he said: "The hunger with those players is still there. We've Sinead Goldrick back from Australia and Hannah Tyrrell is still going very strong. "Carla [Rowe], Leah [Caffrey], Martha [Byrne], lots of girls with multiple All-Ireland medals, but they still have a hunger just like any of the younger girls and it's great to see. "They're really looking forward to it because they wanted to be back on the biggest stage of the year and hopefully they can do themselves justice now on Sunday. "You see the experience and we have so many natural footballers and players that always play full of heart, but they're well able to play football as well. "Their skills execution is brilliant, they're a fit team and do that jersey proud every single time they pull it on. "They will fight to the very, very end as we've seen a couple of times this year and the team that goes out plays it like it's their last game "We've had young players come into the squad and they've stepped up to the mark and they've been looking at the older players and learned lots from them. "The older players have only been too happy to pass on their knowledge to those younger girls." The Dubs have not had it their own way this year, coming out on top against Galway by a goal in the semi-final and drawing with Waterford in the group stages. Two matches with Meath in Leinster have given some indication of what to expect this weekend, with close games between the sides. Casey feels the way his side have progressed through the year has been hugely beneficial: "We've had a tough route along the way. We went down to Dungarvan to play against a very good Waterford team. "Obviously, we've beaten Meath in the Leinster final before that, but then after the group stages, we played an old enemy in Cork and gladly got over that. "Then we had the win a couple of weeks ago against Galway which obviously came down to the last kick of the ball. "We've been delighted with the progress we've made. "Meath really put it up to us in the Leinster final. We were in a bit of trouble and thankfully we pulled it out at the end. "But we were impressed with Meath, and even watching them since, they've improved massively as the championship has gone on. "We know the challenge that lies ahead. We've made lots of improvements along the way as well so I think you're going to see a really, really good game and there's not going to be much in it at the end of the 60 minutes."

Coolera Strandhill's Con O'Meara will be the head coach, with ex-Donegal footballer Eamon McGee also part of the backroom team. Sloyan represented Sligo from 1996 to 2006 and was previously a selector during Kevin Walsh's spell at the helm from 2009 to 2011. The Easkey man guided his home club to Sligo and Connacht junior titles in 2019. Sloyan managed the Sligo under-20 footballers to a maiden Connacht title at that grade in 2022. Meanwhile, Limerick's Tom Hennessy has been appointed Sligo senior hurling manager for a two-year term with an annual review.
