EXCLUSIVE Father who murdered his estranged daughter, 19, by running her over with his car is found dead in prison

Daily Mail16-05-2025
A father who murdered his estranged daughter by running her over in his car has died in prison, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman has said.
Nigel Malt, 47, was jailed in 2022 for the killing of his 19-year-old daughter Lauren after he deliberately ran her over twice following a family row.
The murderer died at category B prison HMP Gartree on April 29. A cause of death has not yet been released.
The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman has launched an investigation into his death, as is standard after a prisoner dies in custody.
Malt was sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty in July 2022 of crushing Lauren to death in his car while 'totally consumed by anger'.
The father, who was estranged from his wife and children, had already threatened her boyfriend with a crowbar outside her home in West Winch, Norfolk, on January 23 2022, where she lived with her mother and younger siblings.
On the day of the tragedy, Malt had argued with his daughter before threatening her partner, Andrew Marnell, with the weapon.
He then got into his car and reversed over his daughter, before then driving over her a second time.
Afterwards, he put her body into the passenger seat and drove her to hospital in King's Lynn, where she was pronounced dead.
A post-mortem examination recorded that she died of significant traumatic injuries to her chest and abdomen.
Prosecutors said said that after Malt 'failed in his bid to inflict violence' on Ms Malt's boyfriend and she told him to go home 'he was totally consumed with anger'.
They added that the 'estrangement from his wife and family no doubt fuelled his anger'.
Malt's wife, Karen, had reported him to police in April 2021 for assaulting her, the prosecutor said, with the defendant arrested and bailed at the time.
On the evening Lauren was killed, Malt went to the shop where his wife worked, drove to her home and made repeated phone calls.
'The defendant's relationship with his family was broken and it was something he wasn't prepared to accept,' said the prosecutor.
While at the shop where his wife was, he made 19 attempted calls to the landline of her home, where Lauren and her boyfriend were, between 6.25pm and 6.52pm.
Malt's 'persistent' calls went unanswered until a final one which was, and lasted one minute and six seconds.
Within two minutes of the call, he drove to the family home in Leete Way.
After Malt ran over his daughter, he said 'don't get the police'.
At trial, he denied murder and maintained Lauren's death was an accident, but was unanimously convicted.
The Ministry of Justice and Prisons and Porbation Ombudsman have been contacted for comment.

Three teenagers remain in custody over murder at seaside resort

Three teenagers arrested on suspicion of murdering a man in his 40s in a seaside town remain in custody, Kent Police have confirmed. The man, whose identity remains unknown, is thought to have died after being hit over the head with a large stone during an altercation on the Isle of Sheppey, by the north Kent coast. He was pronounced dead after the attack at around 7pm on Sunday in the Warden Bay Road area of the Leysdown-on-Sea resort after an air ambulance was called to the scene. A 16-year-old girl and two boys, aged 14 and 15 were arrested on Sunday in Leysdown-on-Sea and questioned by police. Local residents in the area believe that during the altercation, the man was pushed to the ground, and a stone or slab of concrete was dropped on his head. Yesterday, specialist officers brought out a sniffer dog at the crime scene and investigated in Leysdown-on-Sea town centre near the arcade. On Tuesday, the cordon around the crime scene remained but there has been no obvious signs of further investigation. Locals have called the incident 'shocking' and many have said that 'nothing ever happens' in the area. A shopkeeper, working at Oasis Stores across the road from the incident said he had run out to help after his wife said someone was having a heart attack. He told the PA news agency that he had heard 'when he was on the floor they had thrown the big rock at him', adding: 'It's not fair on the man, he was just here for holidays.' However there is dispute among residents as to whether the man was in fact a local. On Monday, a group of holidaymakers were heralding a local called Dean as 'the island hero' for trying to save the man's life. Andrew Owen claims someone ran past Dean shouting 'I've done him' before Dean saw the man lying on the ground and shouted back 'you haven't just done him, you've f****** killed him'. Detectives continue to appeal for witnesses and anyone with information should contact the Major Crime Unit via the Major Incident Public Portal. Alternatively, contact Kent Police on 01622 652006 quoting 10-1384 or report anonymously via Crimestoppers.

Jury considering verdicts in trial of priest accused of sexual assaults

The jury in the trial of a former priest accused of sexually assaulting women has retired to consider its verdicts. Christopher Brain, 68, from Wilmslow, Cheshire, was the leader of evangelical movement the Nine O'Clock Service (NOS), part of the Church of England, in Sheffield between 1986 and 1995. He denies one count of rape and 36 counts of indecent assault between 1981 and 1995 against 13 women. Prosecutors say NOS became a cult where Brain abused his position to sexually assault a 'staggering number' of women followers, exerting control over their lives and ostracising them from friends and family. Inner London Crown Court previously heard that a 'homebase team' – referred to as 'the Lycra Lovelies' or 'the Lycra Nuns' – was set up to 'care for' Brain, with witnesses reporting seeing the defendant surrounded by attractive women in lingerie at his home looking after his needs. Brain told jurors earlier this month that this was 'completely untrue'. Prosecutor Tim Clark KC previously gave an overview of the alleged offences, relaying accounts from complainants who made various claims – including that Brain groomed them, would touch them during massages and re-enacted a film scene involving rape or sexual abuse over clothes. Brain told jurors that some massages, intended to be for 'tensions' on his body, could evolve into 'sensual touching', which he said was between friends and 'no big deal'. He denied touching anyone's breasts during massages while a part of NOS in Sheffield but admitted doing so after his involvement. Brain said this was consensual and not forced. Defence lawyer Iain Simkin KC asked Brain if he would continue touching someone sexually if they were uncomfortable and the defendant said he would not. Brain rejected testimonies from alleged victims that he had tried to control people by making them wear the same clothing or lose weight, or that he discouraged them from maintaining friendships. Asked if he tried to start a cult, Brain said he did not, adding that those involved were 'completely anti-cult'. Jurors were sent out to start their deliberations by Judge Freya Newbery on Tuesday just after 12.30pm.
