Malaysia leads Asean social media safety guidelines development
Leading the Malaysian delegation at the 17th Conference of Asean Ministers Responsible for Information (AMRI) here, Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said that the initiative aimed to provide harmonised guidance for the region, produce a comprehensive report assessing social media regulations across Asean member states, and ultimately support practical guidelines reflecting Asean's unique context.
"We are now in the crucial phase of information gathering and expert consultations.
"At this stage, questionnaires have been circulated, and we have requested nominations for interviews and participation in validation workshops.
"These efforts are vital to ensure the accuracy and relevance of the benchmarking exercise, and they will significantly strengthen the quality of the guidelines we aim to develop," adding that all Asean member states' contributions are essential and contribute to creating a safer, more responsible social media environment for the region.
Teo said this in her remarks during the plenary session held after the opening ceremony of the 17th Conference of AMRI today.
Teo said digital expansion had exposed users to greater risks, including scams, online harassment, hate speech, and disinformation.
"Moreover, different regulatory approaches from different sets of definitions and licensing regimes across Asean member states may lead to unequal protections for Asean citizens, higher compliance costs for platforms, and challenges in cross-border enforcement," she said.
As Malaysia prepares to assume the Chairmanship of SOMRI Working Group on Information, Media and Training (SOMRI WG-IMT) and the Task Force on Fake News in 2025, Teo reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to building on collaborative initiatives, enabling every Asean citizen to navigate the evolving media landscape securely.
She said a truly united Asean Community must be built on strong, inclusive, and trusted media and information ecosystems, calling for Asean member states to collaborate and realise the vision toward a resilient, responsive, and truly connected Asean by 2035.
Teo also highlighted several significant Asean-led efforts, including the Asean Guideline on Management of Government Information in Combating Fake News and Disinformation, endorsed at the 16th AMRI in Da Nang in September 2023.
It includes the Asean-Australia Workshop on Managing Government Information, held from Oct 1 to 3 last year, in Jakarta, which allowed delegates to exchange strategies and national experiences in countering disinformation, she said.
Teo said key initiatives discussed at the workshop included the establishment of rapid-response fact-checking units supported by AI-enabled monitoring dashboards, the implementation of community-based digital literacy workshops and the integration of media literacy modules into school curricula.
Meanwhile, guided by the AMRI Vision Statement 2035 and building on the achievements of regional efforts such as the Da Nang Declaration and the Asean-China Year of People-to-People Exchanges, Teo reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to media cooperation, digital literacy, and content co-production.
On the 17th Conference of AMRI, themed 'MAJU-Media Advancing Joint Understanding: Transforming Media's Role in Advancing Cooperation and Mutual Understanding in Asean', Teo said it reflects a collective commitment to transform media into a participatory platform that is inclusive, accessible, and responsive to the needs of all communities across the region.
Also in the Malaysian delegation are Information Department (JaPen) Communications and Community Development Service Division director Muhammad Najmi Mustapha and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) chief corporate and international officer Syahrilazli Mahammad.
The delegation also includes MCMC director II (Asean and Bilateral) Fatin Nabiha Ab Aziz, Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) executive editor for International News Service Mohd Shukri Ishak, as well as other high-ranking officials from the Communications Ministry and its agencies.

Malaysian students from UK unis share ideas with PM to tackle brain drain
KUALA LUMPUR: Representatives from the Malaysian Students' Council in the United Kingdom and Eire (UKEC) shared ideas and suggestions with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on addressing Malaysia's long-standing brain drain issue during a courtesy call to his office recently. In a Facebook post, Anwar said the meeting saw UKEC propose opportunities for more strategic collaboration between the federal government and the council through the Higher Education Ministry, covering various fields within existing policies. The prime minister said he valued the students' perspectives and stressed the need for all stakeholders to fully utilise existing government structures and frameworks to avoid duplication. "We must ensure that engagement and dialogue continue regularly so that various issues can be coordinated effectively and systematically," he said. Anwar added that such collaborations could open new avenues for Malaysian talent abroad to contribute to national development, whether by returning home or through overseas initiatives connected to Malaysia. The UKEC delegation, led by chairman Vincent Tang, represents more than 16,000 Malaysian students studying in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. "They are all currently on summer break and undergoing internships at private companies and government-linked companies (GLCs) in Malaysia and abroad," he said.

Petronas ownership remains under Federal govt: Azalina
KUALA LUMPUR: The ownership of Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) remains with the federal government, although steps were taken to enhance the participation of states through strategic collaboration platforms, joint project implementation, and involvement in the value chain, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said. Azalina said the federal government's approach is aligned with an inclusive federal structure and ensures sustained benefits for all parties. The minister said that the federal government is currently the sole owner of Petronas, which is incorporated under the Companies Act 1965 as the national oil and gas company. "The Petroleum Development Act 1974 (Act 144) entrusts Petronas with ownership of petroleum, along with the exclusive rights, powers, freedoms, and privileges to explore, manage, and develop the country's petroleum resources, whether onshore, offshore, or in Malaysian waters," she said in a response posted on the Parliament's website today. Azalina was responding to Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan (GRS-Keningau), who asked whether the government could consider distributing 50 per cent shares in Petronas to oil- and gas-producing territories and states, namely Sarawak, Sabah, Terengganu, and Kelantan. According to Jeffrey, the distribution is a fundamental step to strengthen the Malaysian Federation moving forward, while easing politicisation and dissatisfaction over oil and gas rights. Azalina said that although the ownership of Petronas is under the federal government, the current approach allows producing states to receive direct benefits from the petroleum industry through cash payments and various forms of commercial cooperation. "At the same time, overall revenues from the sector are fairly distributed across the country in line with national development needs," she added. -- BERNAMA

Defiant Akmal confronted by counter protest, chastises party guilty of flying flag upside down hailed as hero
SUCH was the sentiment expressed by UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh after having led a group of about 300 protestors in a 1.4km 'peaceful' march to the hardware shop in Kepala Batas, mainland Penang 'to salvage the pride of our Jalur Gemilang'. This came about after Lawyers for Liberty (LFL) director Zaid Malek who did not mince his words in wanting to school the firebrand Merlimau state assemblyman that his actions are unlawful and to protect the store owner from bullying and intimidation, 'set up a human barricade' of his own. In fact, Malay news portal MalaysiaGazette reported that a war of words erupted after Zaid and his group displayed 'Jangan bersikap Zionist' (Don't behave like Zionists) placards to the UMNO and Bersatu Youth rally-goers. At the very outset, newly-appointed Penang police chief Datuk Azizee Ismail has urged all parties to wait for a decision by the deputy public prosecutor's office on the allegation of the Jalur Gemilang being flown upside down and to refrain from any actions that could heighten tensions. Editor's Note: Akmal reacted to the call with the response that 'we only come to see the big flag (put up by DAP at the hardware shop premises) and just to eat nasi kandar 😉' 'The party guilty of flying the Malaysian flag upside down are looked up upon as heroes!' lamented Akmal on his Facebook page. 'Those who defend the Malaysian flag are considered Zionists. That's indeed their nature. It's true that Buang exists (Editor's Note: Probably referring to Zaid as a traitor in reference to a treacherous cop character in P. Ramlee's 1958 film Sarjan Hassan).' Reacting to the Russia-trained medical doctor's having defied the police order not to hold any gathering in Kepala Batas yesterday (Aug 14), Penang DAP is expected to file a police report today (Aug 15) against such action. 'Penang DAP urges the police to take strict action against him (Akmal) to send a signal that provocative acts like this are not allowed in this country, especially during the National Day month which is supposed to promote unity and not division,' the party's state chairman Steven Sim Chee Keong pointed out in a statement. 'As part of the state government, Penang DAP fully respects the (police) directive and has not mobilised members and supporters to attend the rally. 'Only local representatives were present to distribute the Jalur Gemilang in conjunction with the National Day celebration month as an effort to foster the spirit of patriotism and strengthen the unity of the people.' In his message to his 'troops' earlier, Akmal has reiterated his 'No fear, No surrender' slogan – a hint that he is unwilling to let the issue die down that easily – which he popularised to rally protestors during the KK Super Mart sock-gate ordeal. 'We came not because of the political banner but because of our beloved Jalur Gemilang,' he penned on his Facebook page. 'Thank you to the police, the FRU (Federal Reserve Unit) and everyone involved,. We've successfully proven that we can assemble peacefully. No fear, No surrender!' – Aug 15, 2025
