NEW YORK (AP) — Alonso Martinez scored early in the second half for New York City FC and Matt Freese made it stand up for a 1-0 victory over Philadelphia at Citi Field on Saturday night in the Union's first match without Daniel Gazdag.
Martínez used an assist from 20-year-old defender Mitja Ilenic in the 55th minute to score for the fifth time this season. Martínez scored 16 goals in 26 appearances last year in his first full season in the league. Ilenic notched his first helper of the campaign and the third of his career in his third season with NYCFC (3-3-2).
Philadelphia (4-3-1) couldn't get anything going after sending Gazdag — the Union's all-time goal scorer — to the Columbus Crew in a $4-million cash-for-player deal on Friday with performance-based incentives that could add another $500,000. Gazdag scored a club-record 59 goals in 125 appearances since 2021. He set the Union's single-season record with 22 goals in 2022, finishing one behind Nashville SC's Hany Mukhtar for the Golden Boot Award.
Freese finished with two saves on the way to his second shutout in eight starts this season for NYCFC.
Teenager Andrew Rick made his first start this season for the Union. The 19-year-old allowed 12 goals in six starts last season in his debut. Rick had his only save in a scoreless first half.
The Union began the day in a three-way tie for third place in the Eastern Conference with Charlotte FC and FC Cincinnati
Bradley Carnell is in his first season as coach of Philadelphia. Pascal Jansen is the first-year coach for NYCFC.
NYCFC travels to play the New England Revolution on Saturday. The Union will host Atlanta United on Saturday.

Lifelong Phillies fan in need of kidney transplant making pitch to Philadelphia to help save his life

One lifelong Philadelphia Phillies fan is making a pitch to the city to help save his life. AJ Tantala, a 25-year-old from Langhorne, Pennsylvania, is hoping people look up and feel inspired to go to bat for him. Tantala has two big passions in life: theater and the Phillies. "I just had this attitude growing up, 'Oh, it's not for me, you can't do that, it's not cool,'" Tantala said. "Later in high school, I got involved in it, and it was one of the most rewarding experiences." "He was born, and I knew from Day 1 that he would be involved in theater arts," Penny Tantala, AJ's mother, said. "I knew it." AJ Tantala even found a way to merge his passions in a Cinderella play. AJ Tantala "I turned around, did a big reveal, and there was my Phillies jersey," he said. "I think it was the biggest standing ovation of the show." Beneath his well-versed life lies enormous health issues. Born with posterior urethral valve syndrome, he suffered from kidney failure when he was 2 years old, with an emergency surgery resulting in kidney disease. "Why can't it be me and not him?" Penny Tantala said. "You never want to see your kids hurt in any way." "For the first 22 years of my life, I was just naive to it," AJ Tantala said. "I was ignoring it." He was no longer able to ignore it about three years ago when his condition worsened. His kidney function was plummeting to about 10%, making the need for a transplant inevitable. "We've had 19 different people come forward and try to be donors for him," Penny Tantala said. "There's some small medical condition that would prohibit them from being a donor." In his urgent search for a kidney donor, AJ Tantala has placed six billboards across the Delaware Valley, featuring the Phillies' font and a photo of himself at opening day. CBS News Philadelphia "I love the Phillies. I know so many people out there do too," AJ Tantala said. "I thought if I went that route, it wouldn't just reach more people but the hearts of a lot more people." A kidney donor would not only give a vital organ but also a chance at his biggest dream: a normal life with the ones he loves. AJ Tantala is recently engaged to a teacher who also loves theater, but he hasn't been able to perform for over two years now.

Former Sixers GM pushes back the idea of trading superstar Joel Embiid

Former Sixers GM pushes back the idea of trading superstar Joel Embiid There is a school of thought out there that the Philadelphia 76ers should consider trading away superstar big man Joel Embiid. There are some out there who wonder if the big fella will ever reach the level he was once at when he was undeniably a top 3 player in the league after winning MVP in 2023. He was on his way to winning another MVP in 2024 before that January night when his knee was fallen on by Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga. It was an unfortunate event that derailed both his and Philadelphia's season. He was then limited to only 19 games in the 2024-25 season as he dealt with the injury and had to undergo a second surgery in a span of 14 months. Therefore, some have floated out the idea that the Sixers should look into trading Embiid, but former GM Billy King pushed back on that idea: The hardest thing is knowing that when Joel is healthy, he's one of the best players in the league. Everybody's going to say, 'Well, he's never healthy.' But the thing about it is, when you trade him, you're never getting players of equal value. I think they have to get more athletic around Joel. If you're watching Oklahoma City, Indiana, you watch Boston; I think you need as many 6'8" athletes as possible to be able to compete in this league because the game has changed where the power player down low is not as dominant and the game is try to create mismatches by running pick-and-rolls. The Sixers will be looking to bounce back in the 2025-26 season led by Embiid. The expectation is that he will be fully recovered and ready to go when the season begins in October and the Sixers will be looking to him to lead the way. This version of this team will go as far as he takes them. While Paul George and Tyrese Maxey are there to help, the pressure will fall onto Embiid to get the job done in Philadelphia.

Former 49ers castoff has transformed himself into an Eagles training camp sleeper

Former 49ers castoff has transformed himself into an Eagles training camp sleeper Danny Gray is a talented pass catcher, and the former 49ers draft pick could be an under-the-radar player to watch during Eagles OTAs Say what you will about NBA summer leagues, MLB spring training, and anything else that gets the blood flowing. Seldom does anything compare to the expectancy experienced during a Philadelphia Eagles summertime camp. Veterans who have been sitting out the voluntary portions return to work. New faces in new places bring new optimism. Philadelphia enters mandatory minicamp with a dozen wide receivers on the 90-man offseason roster. We're counting Avery Williams in that number. He has also been called a returner and a running back, but you get the idea. Williams will enjoy both cooperation and competition with the likes of A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Jahan Dotson, but don't rule out a former San Francisco 49ers prospect. He's been turning heads, and there are theories that his stellar play might continue through the summer. Keep an eye on Danny Gray at Eagles minicamp Every year, there are those handful of guys. Undrafted rookies and former castoffs... Newly-acquired Birds who are hoping for a fresh start in a new city. They face challenging climbs, trying to impress the right people and secure a spot on the 53-man roster. Of the aforementioned dozen Eagles wide receivers, six will probably find their way onto the active roster. The rest are auditioning for opportunities on the practice squad or, if they're lucky, a chance to play elsewhere. Brown, Smith, and Dotson will make the Eagles' team. It's also wise to place wagers on Johnny Wilson, Ainias Smith, and Avery Williams. So, in keeping with the theory of six wideouts, if the math is correct, we've seemingly named them, so where does that leave someone like Terrace Marshall? How about someone with a longer shot of earning his place on the depth chart? Feast your eyes on Danny Gray. He returns for another chance at glory after winning a Super Bowl as part of Philadelphia's scout team last season. He'd rather be on the field, though, and he's doing all he can to achieve that. He's done what guys in his position are asked: Make the most of every opportunity. As a result, he enters mandatory minicamp with some buzz. As OTAs wore on, it became apparent that A.J. and DeVonta wouldn't be attending. Gray's opportunities increased. He made the most of them by impressing coaches and fellow teammates, which is precisely what he should do. Gray doesn't have much of a regular-season sample size to grade him on. He was a third-round choice of the San Francisco 49ers during the 2022 NFL Draft. He appeared in 13 games as a rookie, played 87 offensive snaps, and caught one pass for ten yards. It bears repeating. Gray's chances of making this Eagles roster are slim, razor thin, almost, but don't tell him that. He has come to compete. With good coaching and a little luck, good things may happen. Might there be a little Zack Baun in him? Time will tell. Keep an eye on him. There's a possibility we're in for a preseason show.
