Alonso Martínez, Matt Freese lead NYCFC to 1-0 victory over Union

NEW YORK (AP) — Alonso Martinez scored early in the second half for New York City FC and Matt Freese made it stand up for a 1-0 victory over Philadelphia at Citi Field on Saturday night in the Union's first match without Daniel Gazdag.
Martínez used an assist from 20-year-old defender Mitja Ilenic in the 55th minute to score for the fifth time this season. Martínez scored 16 goals in 26 appearances last year in his first full season in the league. Ilenic notched his first helper of the campaign and the third of his career in his third season with NYCFC (3-3-2).
Philadelphia (4-3-1) couldn't get anything going after sending Gazdag — the Union's all-time goal scorer — to the Columbus Crew in a $4-million cash-for-player deal on Friday with performance-based incentives that could add another $500,000. Gazdag scored a club-record 59 goals in 125 appearances since 2021. He set the Union's single-season record with 22 goals in 2022, finishing one behind Nashville SC's Hany Mukhtar for the Golden Boot Award.
Freese finished with two saves on the way to his second shutout in eight starts this season for NYCFC.
Teenager Andrew Rick made his first start this season for the Union. The 19-year-old allowed 12 goals in six starts last season in his debut. Rick had his only save in a scoreless first half.
The Union began the day in a three-way tie for third place in the Eastern Conference with Charlotte FC and FC Cincinnati
Bradley Carnell is in his first season as coach of Philadelphia. Pascal Jansen is the first-year coach for NYCFC.
NYCFC travels to play the New England Revolution on Saturday. The Union will host Atlanta United on Saturday.

There are some out there who wonder if the big fella will ever reach the level he was once at when he was undeniably a top 3 player in the league after winning MVP in 2023. It was an unfortunate event that derailed both his and Philadelphia's season. Therefore, some have floated out the idea that the Sixers should look into trading Embiid, but former GM Billy King pushed back on that idea: The hardest thing is knowing that when Joel is healthy, he's one of the best players in the league. Everybody's going to say, 'Well, he's never healthy.' But the thing about it is, when you trade him, you're never getting players of equal value. I think they have to get more athletic around Joel. If you're watching Oklahoma City, Indiana, you watch Boston; I think you need as many 6'8" athletes as possible to be able to compete in this league because the game has changed where the power player down low is not as dominant and the game is try to create mismatches by running pick-and-rolls. The Sixers will be looking to bounce back in the 2025-26 season led by Embiid. The expectation is that he will be fully recovered and ready to go when the season begins in October and the Sixers will be looking to him to lead the way. This version of this team will go as far as he takes them. While Paul George and Tyrese Maxey are there to help, the pressure will fall onto Embiid to get the job done in Philadelphia.

As OTAs wore on, it became apparent that A.J. and DeVonta wouldn't be attending. Gray's opportunities increased. He made the most of them by impressing coaches and fellow teammates, which is precisely what he should do. Gray doesn't have much of a regular-season sample size to grade him on. He was a third-round choice of the San Francisco 49ers during the 2022 NFL Draft. He appeared in 13 games as a rookie, played 87 offensive snaps, and caught one pass for ten yards. It bears repeating. Gray's chances of making this Eagles roster are slim, razor thin, almost, but don't tell him that. He has come to compete. With good coaching and a little luck, good things may happen. Might there be a little Zack Baun in him? Time will tell. Keep an eye on him. There's a possibility we're in for a preseason show.
