USCG cutter visits PH to help bolster bilateral partnership with PCG

The United States Coast Guard (USCG) Cutter Stratton recently visited the Philippines to discuss measures with the Philippine Coast Guard that aims to boost the maritime ties between Washington and Manila.
The Stratton's crew led by Captain Brian Krautler conducted a port visit in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan from May 16 to 19. He was welcomed by US Ambassador to the Philippines MaryKay Carlson and PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan.
The engagement between the Stratton and the PCG included technical consultations on operational best practices, engagements with the local community, and sports competitions.
'This is the sixth USCG cutter exchange with the PCG since 2019—a testament to the strength of our bond and the enduring value of our Alliance. These engagements are a priority as they enhance our interoperability and deepen the trust that defines our maritime partnership,' Carlson said in a statement.
Meanwhile, two PCG personnel joined the Stratton's weeklong transit from Guam where they participated in various activities such as deck operations, engineering drills, and vessel mooring.
From Puerto Princesa City, the Stratton also conducted an at-sea exercise with the PCG and the Philippine Navy focused on maritime law enforcement, search, and rescue, and marine environmental protection in the Sulu Sea.
After the Philippines, the American ship will sail to Japan to participate in a trilateral exercise with the Philippine and Japanese coast guards. —Vince Angelo Ferreras/RF, GMA Integrated News

Pakistan teen influencer killed after ‘rejecting' man
ISLAMABAD — Pakistani police on Tuesday said a 17-year-old TikTok star was shot dead by a man who had repeatedly contacted her online. Sana Yousaf, who turned 17 last week and had more than a million followers across her social media accounts, was killed at her home in the capital Islamabad on Monday evening. The police have arrested a 22-year-old on suspicion of her murder who spent hours loitering outside her home. "It was a case of repeated rejections. The boy was trying to reach out to her time and again," Islamabad police chief Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi said during a news conference. "It was a gruesome and cold-blooded murder," Rizvi added. Yousaf had more than 800,000 followers on TikTok, a wildly popular platform in Pakistan, where she posted lip-sync videos, skincare tips, and promotional content for beauty products. The last video posted on her account was hours before her murder, in which she was seen cutting a cake for her birthday. Some comments under social media posts sharing the news of Yousaf's murder suggested it was justified because of her social media career, in a society where honor codes restrict how women should behave. "You reap what you sow," said one comment. Women's rights activist Nighat Dad such reactions embolden abusers to "silence women who dare to be visible." "The vile comments under news of Sana's murder aren't just hateful noise, they're part of a mindset that normalizes violence against women in Pakistan," she posted online. Violence against women is pervasive in Pakistan according to the country's Human Rights Commission, and cases of women being attacked after rejecting marriage proposals are not uncommon. In 2021, 27-year-old Noor Mukadam was beheaded by her Pakistani-American boyfriend, Zahir Jaffer, after she rejected his marriage proposal in a case that sparked widespread anger. OFW miscarries on Jeju Air flight
The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) will be providing full assistance to an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) who suffered a miscarriage during a flight to Incheon, South Korea. According to a statement from the DMW, the incident has been confirmed as an "in-flight miscarriage on Jeju Air" through coordination with the Philippine Embassy in Seoul. The woman was traveling with her husband, her mother-in-law, and her daughter from Clark International Airport to Saipan, with the flight making a layover at Incheon International Airport. Upon arrival in Incheon, a 911 rescue team immediately brought the OFW to INHA University Hospital in Incheon but the baby was declared dead on arrival. DMW Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac said the Migrant Workers Office (MWO) in Seoul has already reached out to the woman, who is now reported to be in stable physical condition. The DMW is assisting the OFW with her hospital bills and providing other necessary medical support.
