6 soldiers in Lebanon die in explosion caused by ‘remnants of Israeli war'

Indian Express3 days ago
Six soldiers were killed and others injured in an explosion in the southern Lebanese city of Tyre, the country's army said on Saturday.
In a statement reported by Reuters, the Lebanese army said the blast happened while troops were 'inspecting a weapons depot and dismantling its contents.' It added that an investigation was under way to determine the cause.
Security sources told Reuters the explosion was caused by 'remnants of the Israeli war' in the coastal city.
Israel carried out major strikes against the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah during an offensive last year. That conflict began in October 2023 when Hezbollah fired at Israeli positions along the border in support of Hamas at the start of the Gaza war.
A US-brokered ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel in November ended the fighting. The agreement required Lebanon to seize all 'unauthorised' weapons in the country, while Israel agreed to stop offensive operations against Lebanese targets.

Thailand says another soldier injured by landmine near Cambodia border

A Thai soldier was injured by a landmine near the Cambodian border on Tuesday, the Thai army said, days after the Southeast Asian neighbours agreed a ceasefire following last month's deadly five-day conflict. It was the fourth time in a few weeks that Thai soldiers have been injured by mines during patrols along the border.(Reuters file) The soldier's left ankle was severely injured when he stepped on the mine while patrolling along a routine border route about 1 km (0.62 miles) from Ta Moan Thom temple in Thailand's Surin province, the army said in a statement. The soldier is being treated at a hospital, it said. The incident is clear evidence that Cambodia has violated the ceasefire as well as international agreements like the Ottawa Convention against landmines, Thai army spokesman Major-General Winthai Suvaree said in the statement. It was the fourth time in a few weeks that Thai soldiers have been injured by mines during patrols along the border. On Saturday, three soldiers were injured by a landmine in an area between Thailand's Sisaket and Cambodia's Preah Vihear provinces. Also Read | Cambodia, Thailand agree to ceasefire, neutral monitors after clashes Two earlier incidents led to the downgrading of diplomatic relations and triggered the clashes. Bangkok accused Cambodia of planting landmines on the Thai side of the disputed border that injured soldiers on July 16 and July 23. Phnom Penh denied it had placed any new mines, saying the soldiers had veered off agreed routes and triggered old landmines left over from decades of war. It said on Saturday that it was a "proud state party" to the Ottawa Convention. Thailand and Cambodia have bickered for decades over undemarcated points along their 817-km (508-mile) land border, with ownership of the ancient Hindu temples Ta Moan Thom and the 11th-century Preah Vihear central to the disputes. The latest clashes that started on July 24 were the worst fighting between the countries in more than a decade, and involved exchanges of artillery fire and jet fighter sorties that killed at least 43 and left over 300,000 people displaced on both sides. The fragile ceasefire has been holding since Thailand and Cambodia agreed last week to allow observers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations to inspect disputed border areas, ensuring that hostilities do not resume.

Donald Trump to hold trade and defense talks with South Korean President on August 25

US President Donald Trump will host his South Korean counterpart on August 25 to hammer out details of their recent trade deal and discuss chips, shipbuilding and other topics, Seoul said Tuesday. Lee's office said that the meeting would be about developing the alliance into a "future-oriented comprehensive strategic partnership".(REUTERS File Photo) In return for cutting threatened tariffs of 25 percent to 15 percent, Trump said on July 31 that South Korea would "give" to the United States $350 billion for investments and buy $100 billion of energy products. Trump also said that South Korea agreed to invest an additional "large sum of money", the level of which would be announced when President Lee Jae Myung visits the White House. Lee's office said that the meeting would be about developing the alliance into a "future-oriented comprehensive strategic partnership" in response to the evolving global security and economic environment. Trump and Lee will discuss cooperation "in manufacturing sectors such as semiconductors, batteries and shipbuilding, as well as in economic security partnerships covering advanced technologies, critical minerals and other areas," spokesperson Kang Yu-jung said. South Korean officials have said that Seoul's commitment to help the United States revive its shipbuilding industry was instrumental in reaching the trade deal. South Korea's shipbuilding industry is the world's second-largest following China, with the United States lagging far behind both. Washington is also increasingly looking to overseas shipyards to strengthen its Asia-Pacific military operations, positioning South Korea as a key defence partner. In 2024, Hanwha Ocean, one of South Korea's largest shipbuilders, became the first non-US company authorised to conduct dry-dock maintenance on a US Navy vessel. The leaders' summit will be their first since Lee's election in June, which followed the impeachment of his predecessor after he declared martial law.

(PTI Photo/Atul Yadav)(PTI) The Congress general secretary said the "Israeli state murdered over 60,000 people, 18,430 of whom were children". "It has starved hundreds to death including many children and is threatening to starve millions," she said in a post on X. Enabling these crimes by silence and inaction is a crime in itself, Priyanka Gandhi asserted. "It is shameful that the Indian Government stands silent as Israel unleashes this devastation on the people of Palestine," she said. In another post on X, Priyanka Gandhi said the "cold blooded murder" of five Al Jazeera journalists is another heinous crime committed on Palestinian soil, and asserted that the immeasurable courage of those who dare to stand for the truth will never be broken by the violence and hatred of the Israeli state. Al Jazeera journalist Anas al-Sharif has been killed alongside four colleagues in a targeted Israeli attack on a tent housing journalists in Gaza City, according to the Al Jazeera media network. "The cold blooded murder of five Al Jazeera journalists is yet another heinous crime committed on Palestinian soil," Priyanka Gandhi said. The immeasurable courage of those who dare to stand for the truth will never be broken by the violence and hatred of the Israeli state, the Congress general secretary said. "In a world where much of the media is enslaved to power and commerce, these brave souls reminded us of what true journalism is. May they rest in peace," she said. Priyanka Gandhi has been raising her voice against Israel's actions in Gaza and expressing solidarity with Palestinians. The UN human rights office on Monday condemned Sunday's air strike targeting the journalists' tent in grave breach of international humanitarian law.
