PKR veep condemns assault on Rafizi's son, calls for thorough probe

MIRI (Aug 14): PKR vice-president Roland Engan has strongly condemned the attack on the 12-year-old son of Pandan MP Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, calling it an 'act of desperation of a coward'.
In a statement today, Roland described the incident as a form of 'dirty or violent tactics' aimed at suppressing freedom of expression and speech.
'What happened to Rafizi's family could happen to anyone in the political fraternity or in other sectors in future,' he said.
He emphasised that politics in a democratic nation like Malaysia should remain a non-violent struggle.
The PKR leader stressed that differences in political philosophies should be welcomed and celebrated by all civilised citizens, rather than met with violence or intimidation.
Calling for swift action from authorities, Roland said the demand for justice was not based on political privilege but on the fundamental rights of all Malaysians.
'Therefore, a prompt and thorough investigation should be initiated, not because Rafizi's family is more important or more valuable than other families, but because all Malaysians deserve to live safely in in this country,' he said.
Police confirmed that Rafizi's son was assaulted at a shopping mall in Putrajaya yesterday afternoon.
Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said the incident was believed to have occurred at 2pm at the mall's pick-up and drop-off area.
'The incident occurred when the victim was reportedly with his mother and their driver,' he told Bernama.

Apex court to hear prosecution's appeal in Cradle Fund ex-CEO's murder case from Nov 10 to 12

PUTRAJAYA: The Federal Court has fixed three days from Nov 10 to hear the prosecution's appeal against the acquittal of Samirah Muzaffar and two teenagers who were charged with the murder of former Cradle Fund chief executive officer (CEO) Nazrin Hassan. Wan Mohammad Arfan Wan Othman, one of the lawyers representing Samirah and the two teenagers, confirmed the hearing dates when contacted by Bernama. The hearing dates - Nov 10, 11 and 12 - were fixed during case management before Federal Court deputy registrars Wan Fatimah Zaharah Wan Yussof and Mahyun Yusof on Thursday (Aug 14). On Feb 8, 2024, the Court of Appeal upheld the Shah Alam High Court's decision to acquit and discharge Samirah and the two teenagers on the murder charge. The High Court, on June 21, 2022, freed the trio without asking them to enter their defence, after the prosecution failed to prove a prima facie case against them. Samirah, 50, who is Nazrin's widow, the teenagers (now 22 and 19), and an Indonesian woman, Eka Wahyu Lestari, who is still at large, were charged with killing Nazrin, 45, at his house in Mutiara Damansara between 11.30pm on June 13, 2018, and 4am the following day. In upholding their acquittal, the Court of Appeal held that there was insufficient evidence to determine the guilt of the accused. The Court of Appeal also ruled that there was insufficient evidence to prove that the fire was deliberately started, as there was contradicting evidence from the Chemistry Department of Malaysia and the Fire and Rescue Department's investigators. The Court of Appeal held that the testimony surrounding the petrol and the analysis done on it did not use certified methods, and the investigators had skipped crucial steps needed for the analysis of the petrol. - Bernama

Malaysia, ASEAN to discuss Myanmar election plans in Sept 19 visit

SEREMBAN: Malaysia's Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan confirmed that his official visit to Myanmar on Sept 19 will include discussions on the country's planned elections. He will be joined by counterparts from Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand during the working visit. The delegation aims to ensure the elections, scheduled for late this year, genuinely benefit Myanmar's people. Mohamad stated that the visit's outcomes will be presented at the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur from Oct 26 to 28. He emphasised Myanmar's need to fully comply with the Five-Point Consensus, including ceasefire and humanitarian aid provisions. 'As long as Myanmar lacks political stability, the Rohingya refugee issue remains unresolved,' he said. Bangladesh currently hosts 1.3 million Rohingya refugees, primarily in Cox's Bazar. Malaysia shelters nearly 150,000 Rohingya refugees on a temporary basis. Mohamad seeks clarity on whether elections will proceed nationwide, given 63 areas remain under emergency rule. Myanmar's junta recently formed a new body to oversee elections, ending the state of emergency in place since 2021. The Security and Stability Commission, led by Min Aung Hlaing, officially lifted the emergency status. - Bernama

Lodge report on threatening texts, cops urge Rafizi

Selangor police chief Shazeli Kahar said the statements of six witnesses had been recorded, including from the Pandan MP and his wife. (Bernama pic) SHAH ALAM : Selangor police chief Shazeli Kahar has urged former PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli to lodge a police report over the threatening messages that were sent to his wife earlier today. At a press conference, Shazeli said investigations would be held regardless, but a formal report would help if further action is needed. 'Investigations into that aspect are being conducted. However, we ask for a police report to be made so that it becomes an official report. This will help us if further action needs to be taken. 'We will carry out investigations based on whatever information we receive,' he said. The threats came a day after Rafizi's 12-year-old son was stabbed with a syringe at a shopping mall in Putrajaya yesterday afternoon. CCTV footage showed two assailants, dressed in black with helmets covering their faces, following Rafizi's wife's car on a motorcycle before the incident. Shazeli said six witnesses had given their statements over the attack so far, including the Pandan MP and his wife. Earlier today, Rafizi revealed that his wife had received two threatening text messages from an unknown number, at 1.12am and another at 11.02am, both reading: 'Be quiet. If you continue, AIDS,' with the second message followed by three syringe emojis. Rafizi said he suspected that the attack was linked to a case he was looking into, saying he had met with a group of whistleblowers just last week. When asked whether police have determined the substance in the syringe, Shazeli said: 'We don't know yet. The hospital has taken samples and is arranging for them to be analysed.' On whether the motive was political or personal, he said it had not been determined. 'The investigation is still at an early stage, so give us the space and a chance to carry out a more detailed probe. We do not want to jump to conclusions too soon.'
