Imphal: Normal life in the five districts of Imphal Valley was affected for the second day on Friday due to a 48-hour state-wide bandh called by the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), a Meitei organisation, protesting the removal of Manipur's name from a govt bus.
Business establishments, educational institutions, govt and private offices remained closed and public transport remained off the roads. Except for medical emergencies and those travelling to Ukhrul district to attend the Shirui Lily festival, no other private vehicles were allowed to ply on the roads.
In Bishnupur and Thoubal districts, women bandh supporters stopped vehicles of central security forces and pasted 'Manipur/ Kangleipak' on the windshields of those vehicles.
Kangleipak is the ancient name of Manipur.
Early Friday, roadside vegetable vendors had opened their stalls at Andro Parking, Kongba and Khurai areas in Imphal East district but bandh supporters told them to close their stalls. The bandh was also enforced at Uripok, Singjamei and Kwakeithel in Imphal West district.
On Thursday night, bandh supporters participated in a torch rally for 2km and raised slogans stating 'Manipur cannot be obliterated'.

Central forces personnel have been deployed at strategic places across all points leading to the Raj Bhavan.
The Manipur govt on Wednesday ordered a probe into the allegations that security personnel forced to cover the state's name on a bus taking journalists to the Shirui Lily festival. It was alleged that security forces had stopped the state-run bus, on which journalists were being taken by the govt to cover the tourism festival in Ukhrul district on Tuesday, and forced the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) staffers to cover the state's name written on the windshield with a white paper.
The govt formed a two-member inquiry committee, and said it will "examine facts and circumstances involving security personnel and Manipur State Road Transport Bus carrying media persons to cover the Manipur Shirui festival on May 20 near Gwaltabi checkpost", according to an order issued by the home department. "The committee shall look into lapses, if any, and suggest measures to prevent recurrence of such a situation in future," it said.
The committee, comprising commissioner (home) N Ashok Kumar and secretary Th Kirankumar Singh, has been asked to submit its report within 15 days, it added.
COCOMI called the strike from Wednesday midnight, demanding governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla's apology and resignations from security advisor Kuldiep Singh, DGP Rajiv Singh and chief secretary Prashant Kumar Singh.
"The decision to have Manipur removed from a state bus itself is anti-Manipur, absolutely challenges the idea of Manipur and its historical and cultural identity," COCOMI convener Khuraijam Athouba said. PTI

SEC to EC: Conduct SIR in Maharashtra after local body elections

1 2 Pune: The State Election Commission has requested the ECI to conduct the proposed special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Maharashtra only after the coming local body elections, citing a shortage of staff and pressure on election machinery. In a letter to the Election Commission of India (ECI) through the chief electoral officer (CEO)'s office in the last week of July, state election commissioner Dinesh Waghmare said the ward formation and electoral roll bifurcation for the local body polls in Maharashtra would soon be carried out. "This will require staff. The local body polls are likely to be held after Diwali. Keeping all this in mind, we have put in the request in advance and are awaiting a response," Waghmare told TOI. Local body polls in Maharashtra are due in 29 municipal corporations, 290 nagar panchayats and parishads, 32 zilla parishads, and 336 panchayat samitis. Terms of these local bodies have expired. The special intensive revision (SIR) schedule has not yet been planned for the state. The ECI had directed all states to follow its nationwide plan, which is being carried out in Bihar, to weed out fake names and strengthen the accuracy of rolls. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo You Can Also Check: Pune AQI | Weather in Pune | Bank Holidays in Pune | Public Holidays in Pune | Gold Rates Today in Pune | Silver Rates Today in Pune Senior election officials said such revisions were typically carried out once in 20–25 years. The last intensive revision in Maharashtra was conducted in 2002. Data from 2002 has been forwarded to the CEO's office for use as the cut-off year. In Bihar, the last intensive revision was done in 2003, which is now being used as the cut-off for the ongoing revision ahead of the assembly elections. Officials explained that during the exercise, booth level officers (BLOs) must visit every household to verify each voter listed on the rolls. "Every voter has to be verified. Those whose names appeared in the 2002 intensive revision in Maharashtra will only need to sign a confirmation form. But those added later will have to provide residence and citizenship evidence. This helps remove voters who may have died or shifted permanently," a senior official said. The verification process is conducted through a cellphone application provided by the CEO office. The state CEO office added that training of BLOs was on, covering both summary and intensive revision formats. Another official said the Bihar SIR model was expected to be replicated in other states. This will involve pre-printed enumeration forms and categorisation of voters (born before 1987, between 1987–2004, and after 2004). The same set of 11 documents for proof of birth, citizenship and residence will apply for most states, though some state-specific relaxations may be allowed. Political observers are of the view that the SIR should have been ideally conducted ahead of the local polls for ensuring clean voter lists. "The SEC is now using the CEO list that was used during the assembly polls. There could have been many discrepancies, which need to be corrected," a political observer said, adding that local elections in Maharashtra could not be further delayed. Mumbai model files complaint against Khadse's son-in-law

Pune: The cyber police have registered a fresh case against former state minister Eknath Khadse's son-in-law, Pranjal Khewalkar, on Friday, following a complaint lodged by a 26-year-old Mumbai-based model. In her complaint, the woman alleged that Khewalkar called her to different hotels in the city between 2022 and June this year. During this period, the model alleged that Khewalkar, under the pretext of creating a portfolio for her, photographed and recorded videos of her compromising positions. According to the police, the complainant takes up fashion-related assignments in Pune and Mumbai. A mutual friend introduced her to Khewalkar, the police said. In her first information report (FIR), the woman expressed apprehension that these photographs and videos could be misused by Khewalkar. The police registered a case under sections 77 and 66(E) of the Information Technology Act. Section 77 states that penalties under it do not prevent further punishment under other laws, and 66(E) prescribes up to three years' imprisonment or a fine for violating privacy by capturing or sharing private images without consent. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The 5 Books Warren Buffett Recommends You To Read in 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo You Can Also Check: Pune AQI | Weather in Pune | Bank Holidays in Pune | Public Holidays in Pune | Gold Rates Today in Pune | Silver Rates Today in Pune On July 25, officers from the crime branch arrested Khewalkar and six others, including a bookie and two women, over a house party involving drugs. All seven are in judicial custody. The police examined Khewalkar's mobile phone and discovered many objectionable videos and photographs of several women from different parts of the country. The Maharashtra State Commission for Women has asked the Pune police to investigate this aspect of the case. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). SPPU seeks clarification as Army Law College students' protest enters 9th day

Pune: Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) sent a letter to the Army Law College on Thursday, asking them to clarify their position on the grievances raised by students. The students have alleged deteriorating academic, administrative, and mental health conditions in the college and have demanded the resignation of the principal. Students have been boycotting classes since Aug 8, and to minimise academic loss for juniors, seniors have said they are conducting classes for them. Madhushree Joshi, principal, however, on Saturday denied all the charges. According to the letter, reasons for the protest include appointing teachers without expertise in certain subjects, dissolution of the student council for voicing students' issues, public humiliation and mental harassment of students by the principal, discrimination based on parents' rank, failure to complete mandated lectures in a subject taught by the principal last year, and the adoption of anti-student policies in general. "We have given them seven days to respond. If the reply is not satisfactory, further course of action will be decided," said Kalkar. The students have also called for the reinstatement of the student council as an independent student body, free from interference by the administration; formation of an independent fact-finding commission with no links to SPPU or the current administration; constitution of a neutral grievance redressal committee; and financial transparency with public disclosure of details regarding NCC fees, hostel expenditures, and use of college funds. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Army Law College, which started in July 2018, is governed and managed by the Army Welfare Education Society (AWES) and exclusively admits children of army personnel. Offering five-year integrated courses in BBA LLB and BA LLB, it currently has approximately 377 students enrolled. On the first day of the protest on Aug 8, police were called to the campus by college officials. Students said they had sent over 150 emails to AWES and also sent emails to the Bar Council of India and SPPU in the past two months. It was because of no response from them that they resorted to boycotting classes, students said. Despite a high-ranking official from the southern command visiting the institute and promising resolution of the student complaints, students are firm on their demand that they will stop their protest only after the principal is suspended. "At least order an inquiry and send her on administrative leave. If the entire student community is coming together against one person at the cost of our academic and future life, how can authorities turn a blind eye to our grievances?" asked a student. Students accused the principal of mismanagement, suppression of student rights, discriminatory behaviour, and repeated mental harassment. "First-year students had no teacher for the accounting subject. Teacher with expertise in constitutional law was asked to teach international law. The training and placement officer was asked to teach finance and business communication. The principal taught us a subject named the Transfer of Property Act last year. Out of the mandated 60 lectures, she completed only 25, and when we complained, she sent us audio lectures on WhatsApp. Who does that?" asked another student. Other complaints by students include guest lectures focusing on religious beliefs rather than from experts in the law field; not providing last year's marksheet on time, hampering students' internship and other opportunities; asking students to compulsorily vacate the hostel during the one-week Diwali break, forcing them to book tickets during peak time when the tickets are costly and hard to get; cramming four students in rooms designed for three, etc. Principal Joshi said that grievance mechanism as per UGC and AWES rules is functional in the college. "There is no academic mismanagement in the college. Students are being taught by faculty members as applicable and required. Appointment/nomination of student council is as per AWES rules in vogue. Points made regarding denial of authorised leave, discrimination based on rank of parents, misuse of college resources are incorrect. Allegations regarding financial impropriety are incorrect and no specific case of financial irregularity has ever been brought out. Individuals in any appointment found tarnishing the reputation of the college will be held responsible. Deputy chairman interacted with students on Aug 12." Suneel Mann, registrar of the college, could not be contacted for comments despite calls and messages. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
