North Goa temple: Stampede kills 6, injures 30 during annual pilgrimage festival
Jatra, held in honour of Sri Lairai Devi, is attended by thousands of devotees known as Dhonds, who circle a fire pit (homkhund) and walk over the burning hot coals. The event also draws lakhs of devotees and onlookers who gather to witness the spectators.
'Deeply saddened by the tragic stampede at the Lairai Zatra in Shirgaon this morning. I visited the hospital to meet the injured and have assured all possible support to the affected families. I am personally monitoring the situation to ensure that every necessary measure is being taken,' Goa chief minister Pramod Sawant said on X, adding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi have taken a 'detailed stock of the situation, offering his full support during this difficult time.'
Sawant visited the Asilo district hospital in north Goa and the Bicholim primary health centre to meet with the injured.
Among the injured, ten patients are reported to be in critical condition and are under observation at Goa Medical College near Panaji.
Health minister Vishwajit Rane said that additional doctors have been deployed, and a dedicated intensive care unit has been set up to provide focused care.
The stampede took place around 3 am, a police officer said, requesting anonymity. He added, 'There is a steep incline to approach the temple. A huge crowd of devotees had gathered on that narrow stretch to offer prayers. The circumstances are not yet clear, but it appears that one person fell on that slope, which then led to a stampede.'
Earlier, the Goa Police had said that the 'highest-ever deployment of police personnel had been made to maintain law and order and to ensure the smooth conduct of the annual zatra at Shirgao, Bicholim.'
To ensure the smooth flow of traffic and proper parking of vehicles on Friday, traffic police along with 'one deputy superintendent of police, 14 police inspectors, 28 police sub-inspectors, 16 assistant sub-inspectors, 50 head constables, 310 police constables and 65 lady police constables from north Goa district police have been deployed for effective crowd control, safe and smooth passage to the devotees. Besides, three male platoons and two female platoons of IRBn and 50 police constables from Goa reserve police force have been deployed for Jatra bandobast,' police superintendent (north Goa) Akshat Kaushal, had said on Friday.
'Aerial drones have been placed for covering the Ariel view of Jatra/Festival and to maintain surveillance on the movements of the crowd. Vajra Van (riot control vehicle) is also stationed at the venue of Jatra. Plain cloth Police staff have also been deployed to keep check on the activities of criminals/anti-social elements and to prevent and detect crime like pick pocketing, eve teasing etc. Proper coordination is maintained with the managing committee of the Devasthan,' Kaushal had said.

Goa land grab case: ED files prosecution complaint against ‘mastermind'
The Goa Zonal Office of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in Panaji has filed a prosecution complaint before a special PMLA court in Mapusa in a money laundering case against Rohan Harmalkar, Mohammad Suhail and three other accused in an alleged multi-crore land grabbing scam in Goa. It was filed on July 31 under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. In a press statement, the ED said it initiated the investigation on the basis of two FIRs registered by the Goa Police on charges of forgery, cheating and criminal conspiracy, involving fraudulent transfer and sale of immovable properties in Bardez taluka in North Goa. The ED said its investigation revealed that the accused persons, led by Harmalkar, in active connivance with others, fraudulently acquired multiple immovable properties by forging documents such as wills, inventory proceedings, genealogical records and sale deeds. 'These properties were then projected as untainted and sold to third-party purchasers, thereby laundering the proceeds of crime. During the course of the investigation, searches were conducted at premises linked to the accused persons under section 17(1) of PMLA, resulting in seizure of voluminous incriminating documents, digital evidence, and freezing of numerous bank accounts,' the ED said. Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) leader and businessman Rohan Harmalkar was arrested by the ED on June 3 for allegedly hatching a conspiracy to illegally appropriate land through forged title deeds and selling several properties unlawfully. Harmalkar had unsuccessfully contested the 2022 Goa Assembly election as an Independent candidate from the Cumbarjua constituency after he was denied a ticket by the BJP. He joined the MGP in 2024. He was arrested after the ED carried out multiple raids on April 24 and 25 under the PMLA. 'The investigation revealed that he played a central role in orchestrating the forgery, coordinating the fake documentation, and receiving substantial financial consideration in cash and through banking channels,' the ED said. Last week, the ED attached immovable properties, with an estimated total value of over Rs 212 crore, that allegedly constituted direct proceeds of crime as part of the money laundering probe. Mohammad Suhail, who is also alleged to be a 'mastermind' in the land grabbing scam, was arrested in June by the Goa Police's crime branch. The Goa government formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) on June 15, 2022, to investigate cases of illegal land transfer and land grabbing. The SIT probed 44 FIRs involving more than 100 properties and made over 75 arrests. In its report, the Commission of Inquiry, which was appointed to probe the cases, detailed how government records had been tampered with in a 'systematic and organised' manner and forged sale deeds with Portuguese-era calligraphy were inserted into the records, allegedly 'in connivance with the staff of the Directorate of Archives and Archaeology'.

ED attaches properties worth over Rs 200 crore in Goa land grab case
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has provisionally attached immovable properties worth Rs 212.85 crore located across prime areas of Goa in connection with a major land-grabbing and forgery properties were attached on July 28 as part of an ongoing probe into a criminal syndicate allegedly led by Rohan Harmalkar, who, along with his accomplices, is accused of grabbing high-value land in North Goa using forged ED launched its investigation based on two FIRs registered by the Goa Police against Harmalkar and others for alleged offences including cheating, forgery, impersonation, and the use of fake documents to illegally acquire land. According to the agency, Harmalkar conspired with Alcantro D'Souza and others to run a well-planned operation targeting land parcels in areas such as Anjuna, Revora, Nadora, Camurlim, and Parra, all located in Bardez Taluka and Mapusa probe revealed that the group used forged genealogical records, fake sale deeds, counterfeit wills, and manipulated court proceedings to claim ownership of valuable properties. These actions, the ED said, helped generate significant 'proceeds of crime' under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), of these proceeds were received directly by Harmalkar, D'Souza, and their associates, and were routed through the bank accounts of family members and aides to disguise the illicit origins of the far, assets worth Rs 212.85 crore have been identified and provisionally attached.
