CBS News6 hours ago

Jacob Lopez pitched seveninnings and Nick Kurtz hit a three-run homer to help the Athletics beat the Detroit Tigers 3-0 on Wednesday night.
Lopez (2-4) gave up three hits and a walk, striking out six to improve to 2-0 with a 0.82 ERA in his last four starts.
Jack Flaherty (5-9) took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits and four walks in six innings. Flaherty struck out seven.
Flaherty walked two batters in the third before Kurtz hit a changeup to the top of the first row of shrubs above the 412-foot sign.
The Tigers didn't get a runner in scoring position until Jahmai Jones doubled with two out in the sixth. Lopez got Riley Greene to ground out to end the inning.
The Athletics got two singles to start the eighth, putting runners on the corners, but Matt Gage and Dylan Smith escaped the inning.
Michael Kelly pitched the eighth, aided by running catches by Tyler Soderstrom in left and Denzel Clarke in center. Mason Miller threw a perfect ninth for his 15th save.
Wenceel Pérez threatened Lopez's shutout with a one-out triple in the seventh, but he bounced back to strike out Zach McKinstry. That brought Mark Kotsay out of the dugout and Kelly out of the bullpen, but Kotsay decided to stick with his starter for one more batter.
As Kelly reversed his steps, Lopez got Dillon Dingler to pop out to shortstop Jacob Wilson.
Kurtz has homered six times in his last 10 games and ranks second in the majors among rookies with 11 homers.
The teams finish the three-game series Thursday, with Athletics LHP Jeffrey Springs (5-5, 4.52) facing LHP Dietrich Enns (season debut), who will be making his first MLB appearance since 2021. He spent 2022 and 2023 with the Seibu Lions in Japan and 2024 with the LG Twins in South Korea.

What Did the Fan Say to Make Ketel Marte Cry? Here's What's Known

Diamondbacks' second baseman Ketel Marte's mom died tragically. Elpidia Valdez passed away in a 2017 car accident in the Dominican Republic, according to My Stateline. Thus, it's not surprising that Marte is still emotional about the topic. Advertisement Now a fan who taunted him about his mom has received his punishment. However, what the fan said exactly has not been revealed. What is known: The Diamondbacks' manager Torey Lovullo told AZCentral that he heard what the fan said to Marte but did not want to repeat it. A new TikTok video shows Lovullo yelling at the fan. The same TikTok page posted a video its creator says shows the fan being confronted by a security guard, but that has not been verified. 'Dumb f—,' Lovullo said, according to the New York Post, pointing at the fan. 'His mom died, you dumb f—. Dumb f—.' The fan "yelled derogatory comments about his deceased mother," AZCentral reported. The incident occurred in Chicago on June 24. Advertisement The 22-year-old fan, who has not been named, has been "banned" indefinitely from "all ballparks" in Major League Baseball, ESPN reported, citing a source. "Ketel Marte was in tears after a fan shouted something regarding his late mother that passed away in a car accident in 2017," wrote Barstool Baseball, sharing the video. "Manager Torey Lovullo and Geraldo Perdomo consoled him after the incident The fan was removed from the ballpark," the post says. The video shows Marte visible in tears. Marte's teammate Geraldo Perdomo urged Major League Baseball to take action against the man. 'That can't happen,' Perdomo said to AZ Central. 'Everybody knows how Ketel is. He's fun. He plays the game hard. I feel bad for him. I feel mad about it. I hope MLB can do something with that guy. I don't know who it was, but they've got to do something. We can't continue to do that (expletive) here in MLB.' Advertisement The fan showed remorse after making the comments, ESPN reported. Marte's mom died in the accident shortly after he had spoken to her on the phone, according to AZ Central. Caitlin Clark Made Unfortunate History During Fever-Storm Game

Caitlin Clark Made Unfortunate History During Fever-Storm Game originally appeared on The Spun. The Indiana Fever picked up a much-needed win over the Seattle Storm on Tuesday night, but Caitlin Clark's struggles on the hardwood continued. Advertisement Clark had just six points in one of the worst shooting performances of her career. She went 3 for 13 from the field and failed to hit a single attempt from beyond the arc. Believe it or not, the sharpshooter from Iowa has made just one 3-pointer over the past three games. On top of her shooting woes, Clark has really struggled taking care of the basketball. She has recorded 22 turnovers during her three-game slump. On Tuesday night, Clark recorded more turnovers (8) than points (6) in a game for the first time in her career. That has led to fans questioning if everything is OK behind the scenes. "Something is wrong. She's walking off ball more than I've seen in over 5 years of watching her. She's got no spark. She's going through the motions but there's more going on than we know," one fan said. Advertisement "She's definitely in a shooting slump after returning from injury, it happens to most players. Her shot will land eventually," another fan wrote. "She is a matchup nightmare because she can pass, shoot and do a lot of good things on the basketball court," Noelle said, via Athlon Sports. "I like our attention to detail on her. I like how we're staying in plays. And I like that we're getting our hand up and making it difficult." The Fever will return to action Thursday night against the Los Angeles Sparks. That'll be their first home game since June 17. Advertisement We'll see if a return to Gainbridge Fieldhouse helps Clark break out of her shooting slump. NBA rumors: How Kevin Durant trade saga impacts Jonathan Kuminga

The post NBA rumors: How Kevin Durant trade saga impacts Jonathan Kuminga appeared first on ClutchPoints. With the speculation around a possible sign-and-trade for Jonathan Kuminga, there is more reason to believe that the status of star Kevin Durant will heavily impact the uncertainty around the Golden State Warriors' star. While Kuminga seems to have a harsh reality of a dwindling trade market due to other pursuits by teams, among other reasons, this remains true with the current chain of events relating to Durrant. Advertisement Per the latest report from Jake Fischer on 'The Stein Line,' he would speak on how the incoming restricted free agent's future is 'clouded' because of Durant, and until that is concluded, it would be hard to project further interest. Fischer cites the Miami Heat as one team that could look to Kuminga if they cannot get Durant, since they are one of the franchises in active pursuit. 'The immediate future of Golden State's Jonathan Kuminga would appear to be even more clouded by Durant uncertainty than DeRozan's,' Fischer wrote. 'There have been no tangible rumblings to this point that Brooklyn — which is the NBA's lone team on course to have significant salary cap space this summer — has plans to pursue Kuminga with the Nets' projected $55 million in operating room.' 'Trying to forecast sign-and-trade scenarios that could potentially materialize for the bouncy 22-year-old swingman will thus be difficult to pinpoint until Durant's situation is settled,' Fischer continued. 'Maybe Miami, for example, would make a sign-and-trade run at Kuminga in the event that the Heat don't win the trade race to acquire the league's No. 8 all-time leading scorer. Sources say Miami has registered a level of interest in Kuminga in previous transaction cycles.' Prior interest in Warriors' Jonathan Kuminga Cary Edmondson-Imagn Images Even though ultimately Kuminga will look for the best path possible for a hopeful long career, it does seem that there will have to be patience on his end. The Heat have been mentioned as a team with interest for Kuminga beforehand by ClutchPoints' NBA Insider Brett Siegel, who also mentioned the Brooklyn Nets and Chicago Bulls. Advertisement 'The Nets, along with the Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat, are three teams with preliminary interest in Kuminga ahead of free agency, sources said,' Siegel wrote. 'Both Kuminga and the Warriors could come to an understanding on a new, fair contract, but the idea of exploring sign-and-trade opportunities seems like the best path for both parties.' Michael Scotto of HoopsHype would also mention those teams, but also put out the 'possibility' that Kuminga remains with the Warriors, despite some signs pointing to a departure. 'Kuminga is looking for an expanded and consistent role moving forward, league sources told HoopsHype,' Scotto wrote. 'The Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat are two teams to monitor as potential sign-and-trade candidates for Kuminga, league sources told HoopsHype. With that in mind, the Warriors have also not ruled out the possibility of retaining Kuminga, sources said.' At any rate, it remains to be seen what Kuminga's future looks like, but fans will likely know more once Durant is dealt soon.
