Amid use of fake documents, TTEs will soon authenticate passengers' Aadhaar cards
'TTEs understaffed, handle more compartments than before'
'Typically, as soon as the booking windows open, travel agencies begin reserving tickets using random names and assign ages between 32 and 35. This age range is crucial, as it allows any male between 25 and 43 to use the ticket, making it nearly impossible to verify identity based on appearance alone.
When the actual traveler's name doesn't match the one on the booked ticket, the agencies often create fake Aadhaar cards using Photoshop for use during verification,' a retired commercial official from the Chennai division explained.
He also noted that travel agencies across India are well aware that TTEs are understaffed and now handle more compartments than before.
'As a result, TTEs usually just glance at the name and face on the Aadhaar and allow the passenger to travel. Since the document isn't used for any official purpose beyond travel, people often engage in such fraud and discard the fake Aadhaar the next day,' he added.
'In many places, travel agents are familiar with the TTEs and other officials assigned to specific trains. It's a tedious task for a TTE to identify and report passengers carrying fake Aadhaar. If handheld devices are used for verification, only genuine passengers will be able to book Tatkal tickets,' a TTE from the Salem division pointed out.

Govt to launch 80 more pink buses for women
Patna: Transport department is set to launch 80 more CNG-powered pink buses in different districts of the state. At present 20 such buses are operational in five districts—Patna, Muzaffarpur, Gaya, Purnia and Darbhanga. "These buses have become a reliable and safe commuting option for women passengers, especially working women and students," Jyoti, a first-year student, who travels from Saguna More to the Patna Women's College by pink buses, said. These buses, fitted with cameras and GPS, have provided women with a safe way of commuting. Khushi, a student who commutes daily from Bhootnath Road to the Patna Women's College expressed her satisfaction of travelling by the bus. "Compared to auto or e-rikshaw, these buses are safe, comfortable and easily accessible making the journey hassle free," he said. The commuters also praised the low ticket price. Juhi, a secretariat employee, said now she travels without much burden on her pocket. To avail a monthly pass women have to submit their Aadhaar card, college or school ID or cellphone number at BSRTC offices in Bankipur or Phulwari. Aadhaar link mandatory for booking tatkal train tickets
Mumbai: The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has made it mandatory for users to link their Aadhaar numbers with their login IDs to book train tickets under the tatkal quota. The move, being implemented since this week, is aimed at preventing touts from booking multiple tatkal tickets and ensuring that genuine passengers get first priority in tatkal ticketing, said IRCTC officials. Currently, the IRCTC platform has over 130 million active users, of which only 12 million accounts are Aadhaar-verified. Around 225,000 tatkal tickets are booked daily via the online platform, with 66.4% of tickets being sold within the first 10 minutes of the commencement of tatkal booking. Around 84.02% tatkal tickets are sold within the first hour of commencement of tatkal bookings, while 12% tatkal tickets are booked 8-10 hours after the window opens. IRCTC officials said Aadhaar-verified users will get priority access to tatkal tickets, especially during the crucial first 10 minutes. 'Even authorised IRCTC agents will not be able to book tatkal tickets during this initial phase even if they have multiple user IDs and emails,' an IRTC official told Hindustan Times. Aadhaar-based one-time passwords would also be required for booking tatkal tickets, the official said. 'In future, Aadhaar verification will be mandatory for booking tatkal tickets over the counter as well,' the official mentioned. Meanwhile, the IRCTC has launched a campaign against the use of AI tools to book tickets online, said another IRCTC official. 'We have deactivated and blocked over 24 million users in the past six months while another 2 million users have been flagged as suspicious and are under investigation based on their Aadhaar and other documents,' the official said.
