Tenant farmers' association asks A.P. government to ensure supply of high-quality seeds

The Hindu18-05-2025

The Andhra Pradesh Tenant Farmers' Association demanded that the State government ensure high-quality seeds are made available to tenant farmers as the Kharif season is set to begin in the first week of June.
In a statement on Sunday, the association president A. Katamaiah and general secretary P. Jamalaiah demanded that the State government immediately announce a cultivation action plan and ensure the availability of certified quality seeds for all required crops. Private seed companies have hiked prices excessively to profit, and in many districts, in the last Kharif season, these companies sold substandard and adulterated seeds, deceiving farmers, they said.
They urged the Agriculture Department to conduct inspections of agencies and private seed shops, and to take strict action to prevent the circulation of spurious seeds. Legal action should be taken against companies and shop owners who cheat farmers by producing and selling adulterated seeds. If necessary, they demanded that the Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act (PD Act) should be used to curb this menace, they said.
According to estimates by the Agriculture Department, about 85.65 lakh acres are cultivated every year in the State. Of this, 34.75 lakh acres is paddy, 14.80 lakh acres groundnut, 14.67 lakh acres cotton, 9 lakh acres pulses, and the rest is maize, green gram, black gram, and other crops. The government usually prepares seed stock in advance, based on these estimates.
'However, this year, the A.P. Seeds Corporation has reportedly failed to prepare it adequately. It is said that due to pending dues from previous years, seed suppliers are unwilling to supply to A.P. Seeds, causing delays,' they said. Considering this, the Tenant Farmers' Association demanded that the government urgently intervene and supply certified seeds for all crops on full subsidy.

₹146 crore allocated to offer agricultural equipment to farmers on subsidy: A.P. Social Welfare Minister

State government has allocated ₹146 crore to provide agricultural equipment to farmers on subsidy, said Social Welfare Minister Dola Sree Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy while addressing the farmers in 'Eruvaka Pournami' programme, at Throvagunta village near Ongole, in Prakasam district, on Wednesday. Mr. Veeranjaneya Swamy, along with Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar, Ongole MLA Damacharla Janardhana Rao, Santanuthalapadu MLA B.N. Vijay Kumar, Ongole Mayor Gangada Sujatha, Tobacco Board Chairman Yashwant Kumar Chidipothu and Collector A. Thameem Ansaria, participated in the programme organised by the Agriculture Department in a field near the tobacco auction centre. On the occasion, Mr. Veeranjaneya Swamy said, 'The alliance government has streamlined the Central government schemes that were stalled in the regime of YSR Congress Party due to lack of matching grants. Annadatha Sukhibhava scheme will be implemented on June 20 to provide financial assistance to the farmers.' Later, he visited the tobacco auction centre, held a meeting with the farmers and inspected the way tobacco is being procured at the centre. 'Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is a farmer's son and knows the hardships faced by the farmers. Our government has introduced a special budget for agriculture. The Chief Minister wants the paddy farmers to be happy,' the Minister said. The Social Welfare Minister further said that the coalition government will support the tobacco farmers so that they do not suffer any losses. He asked the Chairman of the Tobacco board to ensure that companies purchase the low-grade tobacco also. He said that the government has already formed a committee of ministers to solve their issues. Assuring support to them, Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar said, 'The tobacco companies have earned good profit during the last two years and should buy all the tobacco grown this year as well. The State government will procure black burley tobacco through Markfed from June 16.' 'The tobacco companies should also take responsibility in supporting the farmers. Similar to last year's procurement, the entire crop should be purchased this year. Otherwise, it is not right for companies to buy as they please. They should bring local conditions to the attention of their managements,' said Ongole MLA Damacharla Janardhana Rao. Collector Thameem Ansaria said that the farmers should take advantage of the financial assistance provided by the government. She said that the yield can be increased by implementing the latest technology. CM committed to farmers' welfare: Minister Savitha

Pedaballi: Andhra Pradesh BC Handloom Welfare Minister S Savitha praised Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu as a true supporter of farmers, reiterating his government's commitment to their welfare. She made these remarks during a seed groundnut distribution program held at Pedapalli village in Puttaparthi mandal, organized under the aegis of the District Agriculture Department. Minister Savitha, along with local MLA Palle Sindhura Reddy, participated in the event as chief guests. Addressing the gathering, the minister stated that under the leadership of Naidu, the coalition government is ensuring timely distribution of quality groundnut seed pods to farmers at subsidized rates for the Kharif season. She emphasized that this government genuinely seeks the well-being of farmers. As part of the pre-poll promises, Minister Savitha announced that the first installment of 9,000 (7,000 from the state and 2,000 from the center) under the Annadata Sukhibhava scheme will be credited directly to farmers' accounts on June 21. She also revealed that from August 15, women across the state will benefit from free travel in RTC buses. Highlighting the ongoing development activities, the minister said that projects such as Polavaram, Amaravati capital construction, and CC roads in every village are being actively pursued under the present administration. MLA Palle Sindhura Reddy echoed similar sentiments, stating that the coalition government under Naidu should be remembered as a farmer-friendly administration. She criticized the previous YSRCP government for neglecting farmer welfare and recalled that the TDP-led government from 2014 to 2019 sanctioned approximately 1,400 crore for agricultural equipment. In her address, MLA Sindhura Reddy encouraged farmers to adopt modern technologies and hailed CM Naidu as a visionary leader. She added that out of 14,000 acres of cultivated land in the district, about 12,000 acres have received government-supported drip irrigation systems, further proving the government's dedication to farmers. During the event, groundnut seed bags were distributed by Minister Savitha and MLA Sindhura Reddy to local farmers.
