No easy solutions as Britain faces summer of social and economic discontent

Britain is in the grip of a deepening malaise. Over the past few months and years, a growing and unsettling consensus has emerged: the country is broken. What is less clear is what could be the route towards repair.
Two interconnected crises lie at the heart of the discontent. First is a fraying of what could broadly be termed the social fabric, which leads citizens towards having some trust in each other, and more generally in the state itself. In the Daily Mail, Andrew Neil warns that 'Britain is on the edge of disaster… I'm scared for what's to come.' A recent Economist poll found that seven in 10 Brits believe race riots in the near future are likely.
This apprehension is easy to understand. Over the past few weeks protests erupted in Epping, Essex and near Canary Wharf in London, where locals rallied against the government's decision to house young male asylum seekers in local hotels. Demands to 'send them home' and 'save our kids' soon proliferated online, drawing in agitators from both left and right. These social tensions, particularly over illegal immigration, have become national flashpoints.
Meanwhile, Britain's politics is rapidly fracturing along both ethnic and ideological lines. Jeremy Corbyn recently launched a (yet unnamed) new left-wing party with former Labour MP Zarah Sultana that is likely to draw votes not just from the left but also from those who are furious about Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer's accommodating stance on Israel. This will further fragment the centre. And Nigel Farage, whose extreme right wing Reform UK party has been leading in the polls for months, has warned that 'civil disobedience on a vast scale' will break out unless migrants stop arriving in the UK from across the Channel in small boats.
Why are the British in such a state of angst? And, more importantly, are they right to be so worried?
Much of the anger can be traced to a second, more fundamental issue: the failure of the British economy. Business confidence has cratered. A July survey by business lobby The Institute of Directors (IoD) found that more than 80% of British executives were pessimistic about the economy; a gloom deeper than that felt even after Brexit, the Covid-19 pandemic, or Liz Truss' catastrophic mini-budget that almost bankrupted the country. The institute's economic confidence index has plunged to a record low of -72.
What went wrong?
But what has gone wrong? Essentially, Britain's economy is no longer able to deliver rising living standards, reasonable costs of living or acceptable levels of public services. The state has little fiscal room to ease budgetary trade-offs, while politicians have been either unable or unwilling to confront the difficult choices they entail, be they on welfare, taxation, spending or structural reform. Starmer's caution on welfare reform during the 2024 general election campaign is symptomatic of this broader political paralysis.
Economic data underscores the scale of the problem. According to the 2025 Living Standards Review from the National Institute of Economic and Social Research, real disposable income per capita rose by a paltry 14% between 2007 and 2024, compared with 48% in the halcyon days between 1990 and 2007. Given the collapse in economic fortunes of Britons, it is no surprise disillusionment is rife.
The International Monetary Fund similarly reports that annual trend growth in GDP per capita has declined from 2.5% between 1990 and 2007 to just 0.7% from 2008 to 2025, which is the steepest drop among the G7 plus Spain. Had pre-2008 trends continued, the UK's GDP per capita in 2025 would be a full 33% higher than it is now, representing the largest shortfall in this group.
This drop is fundamentally a result of stagnant productivity. Between 2007 and 2023, output per hour in the UK rose by just 6%, among peers outperforming only Italy. In contrast, the US posted a 22% increase, while the Eurozone averaged 10% (an important consideration given the reality of Brexit).
The UK's torpid productivity is of grave socioeconomic concern. When economies cease to grow, everything becomes zero-sum; more for one group of people means less for others. The problem is exacerbated if demographic change increases the number of older beneficiaries of fiscal transfers relative to that of younger, productive taxpayers. The overwhelming questions in politics become less about growing the pie, but rather a race to contain collective frustration.
Arresting this decline first requires being honest about past failures. There needs to be an acknowledgement that the economic model born of the Thatcher neoliberal revolution has not delivered long-term gains. Much of the post-1980s performance was a mirage created by a global credit boom to which the UK was more exposed than any other developed economy. The act of economic suicide that was Brexit has not helped either. The Centre for European Reform estimates that by mid-2022, the UK's GDP was 5.5% lower than it would have been had it remained in the EU.
Structural weaknesses
These structural weaknesses have become apparent by the increasingly precarious state of public finances. The Office for Budget Responsibility has flagged the UK's perilous position; the country now has the sixth-highest debt, fifth-highest deficit and third-highest borrowing costs among developed economies. June 2025 saw the second-highest government borrowing on record, surpassed only by June 2020 at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Bond markets have traditionally given more leeway to Britain because of its reputation for seriousness, political stability and fiscal prudence. But Liz Truss' disastrous spell as PM seems to have blown that premium for good, while Starmer's Labour looks more like a teetering administration on its last legs than a barely one year old government with a huge majority in the House of Commons. Nigel Farage looks on eagerly from the wings.
Last month, the government failed to pass modest welfare reforms that would have raised a measly £6.5-billion (R156-billion), a fraction of the £1.3-trillion (R31-trillion) annual public spend. Embattled Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves has instead raised taxes on labour and targeted non-domiciled residents, risking the flight of high earners who contribute disproportionately to both tax revenues and general economic activity, particularly in the all-important regional powerhouse of London.
While an outright crisis — whether a debt blow out or social unrest — is still on balance unlikely, the long-term trajectory looks bleak. The UK faces challenges not unlike those confronting other post-industrial democracies. But without access to the EU single market, burdened with a dysfunctional political class and bound by stagnant economic productivity, Britain appears locked in a slow and grinding descent.
The post-1980s era of growth is over. What lies ahead for Britain may not necessarily be an immediate crisis, but it is likely to be a drawn-out period of socioeconomic pain and inexorable decline. DM

Three reasons young people are more likely to believe conspiracy theories – and how we can help them discover the truth

New research reveals people aged under 35 are more likely to believe conspiracy theories due to political alienation and low self-esteem. Conspiracy theories are a widespread occurrence in today's hyper-connected and polarised world. Events such as Brexit, the 2016 and 2020 United States presidential elections, and the COVID pandemic serve as potent reminders of how easily these narratives can infiltrate public discourse. The consequences for society are significant, given a devotion to conspiracy theories can undermine key democratic norms and weaken citizens' trust in critical institutions. As we know from the January 6 riot at the US Capitol, it can also motivate political violence. But who is most likely to believe these conspiracies? My new study with Daniel Stockemer of the University of Ottawa provides a clear and perhaps surprising answer. Published in Political Psychology, our research shows age is one of the most significant predictors of conspiracy beliefs, but not in the way many might assume. People under 35 are consistently more likely to endorse conspiratorial ideas. This conclusion is built on a solid foundation of evidence. First, we conducted a meta-analysis, a 'study of studies', which synthesised the results of 191 peer-reviewed articles published between 2014 and 2024. This massive dataset, which included over 374,000 participants, revealed a robust association between young age and belief in conspiracies. To confirm this, we ran our own original multinational survey of more than 6,000 people across six diverse countries: Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, the US and South Africa. The results were the same. In fact, age proved to be a more powerful predictor of conspiracy beliefs than any other demographic factor we measured, including a person's gender, income, or level of education. Why are young people more conspiratorial? Having established conspiracy beliefs are more prevalent among younger people, we set out to understand why. Our project tested several potential factors and found three key reasons why younger generations are more susceptible to conspiracy theories. 1. Political alienation One of the most powerful drivers we identified is a deep sense of political disaffection among young people. A majority of young people feel alienated from political systems run by politicians who are two or three generations older than them. This underrepresentation can lead to frustration and the feeling democracy isn't working for them. In this context, conspiracy theories provide a simple, compelling explanation for this disconnect: the system isn't just failing, it's being secretly controlled and manipulated by nefarious actors. 2. Activist style of participation The way young people choose to take part in politics also plays a significant role. While they may be less likely to engage in traditional practices such as voting, they are often highly engaged in unconventional forms of participation, such as protests, boycotts and online campaigns. These activist environments, particularly online, can become fertile ground for conspiracy theories to germinate and spread. They often rely on similar 'us versus them' narratives that pit a 'righteous' in-group against a 'corrupt' establishment. 3. Low self-esteem Finally, our research confirmed a crucial psychological link to self-esteem. For individuals with lower perceptions of self-worth, believing in a conspiracy theory – blaming external, hidden forces for their problems – can be a way of coping with feelings of powerlessness. This is particularly relevant for young people. Research has long shown self-esteem tends to be lower in youth, before steadily increasing with age. What can be done? Understanding these root causes is essential because it shows simply debunking false claims is not a sufficient solution. To truly address the rise of conspiracy theories and limit their consequences, we must tackle the underlying issues that make these narratives so appealing in the first place. Given the role played by political alienation, a critical step forward is to make our democracies more representative. This is best illustrated by the recent election of Labour Senator Charlotte Walker, who is barely 21. More inclusive democracy This does not mean discouraging the passion of youth activism. Rather, it is about empowering young people with the tools to navigate today's complex information landscape. Promoting robust media and digital literacy education could help individuals critically evaluate the information they encounter in all circles, including online activist spaces. The link to self-esteem also points to a broader societal responsibility. By investing in the mental health and wellbeing of young people, we can help boost the psychological resilience and sense of agency that makes them less vulnerable to the simplistic blame games offered by conspiracy theories. Ultimately, building a society that is resistant to misinformation is not about finding fault with a particular generation. It is about creating a stronger, more inclusive democracy where all citizens, especially the young, feel represented, empowered, and secure. DM

MKP rejects the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association as 'a neo-colonialism tool'

DA MPL Dr Imran Keeka and ANC's Mncedisi Maphisa were elected CPA additional members, while the IFP's Blessed Gwala became its KwaZulu-Natal branch treasurer. Provincial Speaker Nontembeko Boyce and her deputy, Mmabatho Tembe, were automatically appointed the CPA's branch president and deputy president, respectively, as per their parliamentary positions. They were elected on Tuesday during an event, which was attended by CPA Secretary General Stephen Twigg, a former State for Schools Minister in the United Kingdom, at the provincial legislature in Pietermaritzburg. CPA is made up of the British legislature and its former colonies around the world. 'The CPA, led by King Charles III, whose title rests on stolen labour, expropriated land, and the blood of the colonised, remains a propaganda instrument of empire, cloaked in the rhetoric of 'parliamentary cooperation',' MKP MPL Ishana Barciela said in a statement. The provincial parliament joined the CPA on June 1, 1994, and became a branch on January 1, 1996. Barciela said that since it was established in 1911, the CPA had done nothing to dismantle colonial legacies. 'But it has reinforced Westminster-centric models of governance that are fundamentally incompatible with African revolutionary traditions and indigenous self-determination,' she said. MKP said the CPA is an ideological weapon used to benchmark democracy according to British standards while suppressing African systems and revolutionary visions. 'We are not aligned with the CPA, and we reject its legitimacy, fulfilling the role of a neo-colonial extension of the British Crown's global influence,' said Barciela. She accused the CPA of being tight-lipped on the genocide in Gaza. 'The CPA's deafening silence in the face of apartheid and genocide exposes its racist double standard and moral bankruptcy. 'This silence is complicity, and it should disturb every honest parliamentarian in Africa,' she said. She said the MKP was unapologetically anti-colonial and anti-imperialist, a stance that was aligned with BRICS and the South-South Cooperation (SSC). 'Let it be known that the MKP bears no affection for King Charles and has no respect for the CPA. 'We are building a new Africa: one that is free, sovereign, socialist and united, and neocolonial institutions have no place in this future,' said Barciela. Gwala, who has been participating in the CPA since he became an MPL in 1994, lashed out at the MKP, saying that even its leader, Jacob Zuma, was participating in the association's programmes. 'Unfortunately, to the MKP, whatever is done by someone who is not a member of the MKP is wrong. 'Jacob Zuma did attend these programmes,' he said. He said the MKP was associating everything '(that is)wrong with white people because they stole the land'. He said the CPA does not instill colonialism in the minds of its participants, and 'it is a figment of their imagination as the MKP to believe that it is so because it is not so". 'We need to deal with the issues in a manner that will bring social cohesion, which forms part of the CPA, which trains the parliamentarians,' said Gwala. Gwala said some of the CPA programmes had been implemented in the provincial legislature. '(These include) Programmes of parliamentary democracy, such as gender based issues and quotas to be given to women and youth,' said Gwala. Relaunching the CPA's KwaZulu-Natal branch, Boyce described the CPA as a network of like-minded parliamentarians from over 180 branches across the nine Commonwealth regions who believed in dialogue and diversity-fueled innovation. 'At its heart, the CPA seeks to strengthen democratic institutions and promote human rights and the rule of law. 'It reminds us that parliamentary work is not just about lawmaking, it's about listening, accountability, and ensuring that the voices of ordinary people find expression in the decisions we take,' said Boyce. She said that through its previous participation, the provincial legislature contributed meaningfully to conversations on parliamentary oversight, the role of subnational legislatures, and women's representation.

The UK charity watchdog Wednesday cleared Prince Harry of accusations of bullying in a row with an African charity he founded, but criticised 'all parties' for letting the bitter internal dispute play out in public. The charity Sentebale was at the centre of an explosive boardroom dispute in March and April when chairperson Sophie Chandauka publicly accused Harry, the youngest son of King Charles III, of 'bullying'. Founders resigned amid trustee standoff Days earlier, Harry and co-founder Prince Seeiso of Lesotho had announced they were resigning from the charity they established in 2006, after the trustees quit when Chandauka refused their demand to step down. Harry, also known as the Duke of Sussex, launched the charity in honour of his mother, Princess Diana, to help young people with HIV and AIDS in Lesotho and later Botswana. After a months-long inquiry, the Charity Commission 'found no evidence of widespread or systemic bullying or harassment, including misogyny or misogynoir at the charity,' it said in its conclusions published Wednesday. But it 'criticised all parties to the dispute for allowing it to play out publicly' saying the 'damaging internal dispute' had 'severely impacted the charity's reputation'. It found there was 'a lack of clarity in delegations' which led to 'mismanagement in the administration of the charity' and issued the charity with a plan to 'address governance weaknesses'. 'Heartbreaking' Sentebale said in a statement it 'welcomes' the findings. Chandauka, who was appointed to the voluntary post in 2023 and remains the charity's chair, said she 'appreciated' the conclusions, saying that they 'confirm the governance concerns I raised privately in February 2025'. Probe 'falls troublingly short' A spokesperson for Prince Harry said the probe 'falls troublingly short in many regards. 'Primarily the fact that the consequences of the current chair's actions will not be borne by her — but by the children who rely on Sentebale's support,' the spokesperson said in a statement. 'The Duke of Sussex will now focus on finding new ways to continue supporting the children of Lesotho and Botswana.' Harry said in an April statement that the events had 'been heartbreaking to witness, especially when such blatant lies hurt those who have invested decades in this shared goal'. Objections Speaking to British media after accusing the prince of trying to force her out, Chandauka criticised Harry for his decision to bring a Netflix camera crew to a polo fundraiser last year. She also objected to an unplanned appearance by his wife Meghan at the event. The accusations were a fresh blow for the prince, who kept up only a handful of his private patronages, including with Sentebale, after a dramatic split with the British royal family in 2020. That was when he left Britain to live in North America with his wife and children. Forget me not Harry chose the name Sentebale as a tribute to Diana, who died in a Paris car crash in 1997 when the prince was just 12. It means 'forget me not' in the Sesotho language and is also used to say goodbye. 'Moving forward I urge all parties not to lose sight of those who rely on the charity's services,' said the commission's chief executive David Holdsworth. In her statement, Chandauka added: 'Despite the recent turbulence, we will always be inspired by the vision of our Founders, Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso.'
