Minimum standard of living costs rise by almost 20% since 2020
Essential minimum living costs increased by 1.8% in the past year with a cumulative increase of 18.8% nationally since 2020.
The figures are contained in the annual Minimum Essential Standard of Living (MESL) report published by the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul.
The research team found that households with older children (second-level age) were at a greater risk of deep income inadequacy when dependent on social welfare.
The cost of children aged 12-years and over is the highest of any other age group according to research.
At €158 per week in 2025, social welfare meets 64% of needs for this age-group.
The cost of the needs of a primary school age child is €98, while the needs of a preschool-age child costs €72 per week.
The report also found that the essential standard of living needs for a one parent household with a primary and second-level child cost €555 per week.
When dependent on social welfare supports, income only met 82% of this household's minimum needs.
The cost of a minimum basket of goods for an urban single adult in minimum wage full-time employment rose by 5.6% in 2025.
The report said that while employment generally improves household income, the adequacy of the national minimum wage "continues to be a concern".

Vince swings to profit loss on sales decline
Vince Holdings announced on Tuesday sales fell 2.1% to $57.9 million, resulting in the U.S. luxury fashion brand swinging to a profit loss for the three months. The New York-based company said sales for the quarter ending May 3 were hurt by declining retail store channel sales in the direct-to-consumer segment, as a result of store closures and renovations during the three months. As a result, the fashion firm swung to an earnings loss of $4.8 million or a loss $0.37 per share in the quarter, compared to net income of $4.4 million or $0.35 per share in the same period last year. "I continue to be encouraged by the strong execution and commitment to excellence I see across our organization, and while we are navigating a challenging environment marked by uncertainty, our first quarter performance was relatively in line with our expectations," said Brendan Hoffman, chief executive officer of Vince Holdings. "As an organization, we quickly pivoted all efforts in the latter portion of the quarter to develop and put into action mitigation plans in light of the evolving tariff policies. In short order we have diversified our supply chain, negotiated with vendors, and leveraged other opportunities to mitigate near-term costs." Given the uncertainty related the ongoing tariff launches in the U.S., the company said it is not providing guidance for the full-year 2025. "As we look ahead, we will continue these efforts along with providing customers a high quality product offering and an engaging experience across our channels," added Hoffman. At the end of the quarter, the firm counted 58 Vince stores, a decrease of 4 stores since the same period last year.

A rare unit in Carrie Bradshaw's fictional New York townhouse in 'And Just Like That' has been snapped up for $900,000 ($A1.3 million), despite missing a kitchen. In the 'Sex and the City' reboot, viewers were greeted with the ever-fashionable Carrie, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, dashing in and out of her brand new Greek Revival-style pad. Carrie recently made a fresh start with her purchase in Manhattan's ultra-exclusive Gramercy Park brownstone, having ditched her West Village one-bedroom in order to make room for her boyfriend Aidan, played by John Corbett. Carrie's fictional home inside 3 Gramercy Park West is far more spacious than this real-life studio, but neither the character nor the co-op unit can cook a meal. Carrie famously joked in 'Sex and the City' that she only used her oven for sweater storage. This studio did away with the kitchen altogether. The sellers, identified in city records as Kathryn and Milos Brajovic, bought the studio unit for the exact same price in early 2020. The family also owns a larger parlour-floor unit just above the studio. Milos Brajovic co-founded the Dallas-based studio Lantern Entertainment, formed from a 2018 acquisition of the Weinstein Company, which included control of famous films like 'Django Unchained' and 'Silver Linings Playbook.' The sellers had plans to connect their two units, Beare said, but ultimately reversed course. They decided to part with the studio, but not before tearing out the kitchen. 'He was either going to put a kitchen back in, or the new owner could do it on their own,' Ms Beare said. 'That's why it's sold at the same price.' Considering the prime location, however, Ms Beare called the $US900,000 price tag 'a very good price for a studio without a kitchen.' The studio boasts pre-war bones and classic proportions, with neat pocket shutters and high ceilings. The floors were recently upgraded to wide-plank wood, according to Ms Beare. 'It wasn't an easy decision [to sell], because these types of properties don't come up very often,' Ms Beare said. 'They're really special.' The buyer, whose identity could not be determined, closed on the studio last week for $US900,000, Ms Beare confirmed. 'The first time they came, they just loved it,' she said. The unit garnered a lot of interest, Ms Beare said. 'And Just Like That' understandably came up in most conversations. The address, however, lacks the real-life drama of Carrie's fictional Perry Street brownstone apartment, the owner of which is famously fighting off photo-hungry 'SATC' fans who have climbed up the private stoop for Instagram moments for years. Less foot traffic and the presence of a gate outside the 179-year-old Gramercy Park building prevents that kind of friction, Ms Beare said, but the spot is still popular. 'We always see people coming and taking pictures, but you don't have crowds,' she said. While the apartment lacks a kitchen, the new owner can still indulge their inner Carrie with an impressive four closets, allowing for maximum Manolo Blahniks. G7 leaders vow to tackle migrant smuggling and foreign interference
BANFF, ALTA. — The leaders of the world's seven wealthiest democracies ended their annual summit Tuesday with promises to tackle six pressing policy issues, including artificial intelligence, transnational repression and migrant smuggling. Transnational repression (TNR), a form of foreign interference, and illegal migration, which has become an issue of critical importance for many of the G7 member nations, are major issues in Canada. Article content Member states issued a joint statement committing to further combat TNR, a particularly virulent form of foreign interference that uses coercion and threats to silence dissidents and quiet critics.
