Mara grooms 90 low-income MRSM students for overseas studies

KUALA LUMPUR: Mara has identified 90 Form Five students from Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) nationwide, all from low-income families, to be groomed for studies abroad.
Most of these students, celebrated at the BUDI Holistic Development Programme (BHDP) event today, come from rural areas and have achieved a CGPA of 3.5 and above.
Many have never set foot in Kuala Lumpur.
Mara chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the students were among 2,011 Form One to Form Five MRSM students who received aid under Mara's Education Assistance Programme (BUDI), with more than RM2.2 million allocated.
He said the students' achievements, despite their poor backgrounds, made Mara proud.
They would be exposed to educational opportunities, including the chance to study abroad after completing their SPM this year.
"Mara provides financial support throughout their studies and also introduces initiatives to ensure the development of outstanding BUDI students.
"This programme reflects Mara's commitment to Bumiputera educational excellence, especially among high-performing students who are key to human capital development.
"We are ready to send these 90 students to universities abroad if they continue to excel in their SPM."
Asyraf said at the programme's launch at Mara headquarters.
BUDI gives students from B40 families access to education at MRSM.
The 90 MRSM students will attend a three-day, two-night programme at the German-Malaysian Institute.
Asyraf said BHDP is one of Mara's initiatives to develop outstanding BUDI students.
He added that it is not merely a motivational programme, but part of Mara's mission to produce students who not only excel academically but are also competitive in professional and entrepreneurial fields.
"Mara emphasises not only academic achievement but also spiritual, emotional and social development.
"BHDP focuses on the development of students through sessions and activities on careers, leadership, innovation, character building and future planning."

Accepting Tengku Zafrul into PKR opens door to uncertainty, says Rafizi

Former PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli said the criticisms levelled by Umno leaders against Tengku Zafrul Aziz were valid and deserve the attention of the unity government's leaders. KUALA LUMPUR : Accepting Tengku Zafrul Aziz into PKR will open the door to uncertainty in the cooperation among the unity government's components, says former party deputy president Rafizi Ramli. He said nothing in the draft unity government agreement, drawn up before its formation, forbids its components' leaders from joining other parties. 'This will need to be discussed among unity government components because this is a grey area. '(However, accepting Tengku Zafrul) should be avoided because it opens the door to uncertainty. 'Where do you draw the line when Umno leaders criticise (the move)?' he told reporters in Ampang today. When asked if PKR should also be open to its leaders moving to other parties, should it accept Tengku Zafrul into its ranks, Rafizi said the party's top leaders should come forward to explain the party's stance. He said the criticisms levelled by Umno leaders against Tengku Zafrul were valid and deserve the attention of the unity government's leaders. Earlier, Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said it is 'very inappropriate for any party in the unity government to arbitrarily accept members from other allied parties'. 'This is to prevent causing disharmony among the parties in the unity government. This could lead to continuous prejudice and suspicion among grassroots members about the level of loyalty, sincerity and honesty that we have,' he said. Umno's legal bureau has also been asked to look into the implications of Tengku Zafrul's exit from the party in terms of the party hopping law and on his status as senator. The party's information chief, Azalina Othman Said, said while Umno respects a person's right to make political choices, Cabinet appointments are based on the party represented instead of one's individual capacity. She said while the prime minister chairs the national unity council, Cabinet ministers are appointed as the party's representatives. On Friday, Tengku Zafrul said he had submitted his resignation as an Umno member as well as from all party posts. He said he had informed PKR president Anwar Ibrahim and secretary-general Fuziah Salleh of his intention to join PKR.

Penang Reviewing Land Issue Threatening Future Of 4PAWS Shelter

GENERAL GEORGE TOWN, May 23 (Bernama) -- The Penang government is reviewing concerns raised by the Persatuan Haiwan Terbiar Malaysia (SAFM) over land issues that threaten the future of the Penang Animal Welfare Society (4PAWS) shelter in Teluk Bahang. State Local Government and Town and Country Planning Committee chairman H'ng Mooi Lye said that while no decision has been made yet, the land currently occupied by 4PAWS is under lease until 2030. The organisation is currently working to raise funds to purchase the site. 'In February and March, 4PAWS, through its manager Yan Naung Thet, also known as Murugan, approached the state government and the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) to seek assistance in extending his stay in Malaysia, allowing him to continue volunteering at the shelter. 'At that time, the founder of 4PAWS, Barbara Janssen, was unwell, and discussions centred solely on ensuring continuity of shelter operations, not on the lease issue,' he told Bernama. H'ng was responding to SAFM's call for the state government to intervene and help resolve the land dispute affecting the shelter, which houses around 700 dogs. Earlier, SAFM president R. Kalaivanan said that over 700 dogs at the 4PAWS shelter are at risk of losing their home as the landowner intends to sell the property. The organisation has been given until the end of this month to decide whether it can purchase the land at the price of RM2.2 million. SAFM has appealed to Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow to urgently allocate permanent land to ensure the shelter's continued operation. H'ng added that 4PAWS is a non-governmental organisation providing sanctuary to stray dogs in Teluk Bahang. The shelter has also contributed to MBPP's efforts to manage the stray dog population by caring for animals that have been vaccinated, neutered, and made available for adoption.

SPM top scorer from foster family background gets Mara sponsorship to further studies

TANAH MERAH: Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) will sponsor an outstanding student from a low-income family, Puteri Nur Ain Zulaikha Abdullah, 18, to pursue her studies either locally or abroad. Its chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the MARA Junior Science College (MRSM) Pengkalan Chepa student, who scored 9As in the recently announced Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), has been offered the opportunity due to her inspiring life story, having lived with adoptive families since she was a baby. "She was one of the recipients of Mara's Education Assistance Programme (Budi) during her two years at MRSM Pengkalan Chepa. "We also offer Mara's overseas sponsorship under the Young Talent Development programme for outstanding SPM achievers to pursue studies, either abroad or locally," he told reporters here yesterday. Asyraf Wajdi said the student and her guardian would also receive flight sponsorship from Tanah Merah Umno to attend the Budi-sponsored students gathering for SPM 2024 students who achieved straight As, scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur in two weeks. "I see a strong spirit and great potential in Puteri Nur Ain Zulaikha, and with her excellent results, Mara will help her to realise her dreams," he said. Meanwhile, Puteri Nur Ain Zulaikha expressed her gratitude for the offer, which would help her achieve her dream and passion in the field of Quantum Physics. "I aspire to further my studies in Quantum Physics in Japan. My interest in this field developed after I began reading and researching the subject. My SPM results are a gift to my foster family, who have sacrificed a lot to raise me," she said. She said that since birth, she has been cared for by four different foster families. Currently, she lives with her foster brother, Mohamad Airul Roslan, 35, and his wife Nur Fatihah Saad, 26, who sells fish to support the family. "Previously, I lived with my foster father. After he passed away, I was cared for by my foster grandmother. Two years later, she also passed away. "I was then taken in by my uncle for several years until my foster brother took over the responsibility as my uncle has many dependents and his wife is suffering from paralysis," she said. – BERNAMA
