The Houston Astros are hoping that bringing Carlos Correa back to the Lone Star State allows the player to rediscover his past playoff form. Moreover, Correa's return isn't to relive old memories; it's to help the Astros win the AL West and fend off the Seattle Mariners.
After Sunday's action, the Astros have a 0.5-game lead over the Mariners, so Correa needs to be one of the top players for Houston to ensure that they hold onto the division lead. Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller put Correa as one of the 30 players under pressure in this final stretch of the season.
"In their first year without [Correa], they won 106 games and a World Series with rookie Jeremy Peña filling Correa's shoes," Miller wrote.
"But now, they've put a staggering number of eggs back in the Correa basket, reacquiring their former star and most of what was left on his $200M contract, hoping that a return to his old stomping grounds would be just what the doctor ordered to get him out of what had been a season-long funk."

Through nine games for Houston, the 30-year-old has found his Astros form as he's batting .405 with 15 hits, two homers, 6 RBIs, and six runs scored since his return before the MLB trade deadline.
"So far, so good on the individual front. Correa posted a .931 OPS in his first week back with Houston and just might be the savior that stops the bleeding of what was a stretch of 15 losses in 22 games," Miller added.
"If he starts to struggle, though, and the Astros get overtaken by the Mariners in the AL West before a quick exit from the postseason, don't be surprised if the prodigal son becomes the scapegoat."
When it comes to a tightly contested division race, every game and at-bat matters because unexpected losses or slumps could be what determines the winner. If Correa reverts to his Twins form when the Astros need him the most.

Kirby shines as the Mariners beat the Orioles 1-0 for their 8th straight victory

BALTIMORE (AP) — George Kirby pitched seven three-hit innings, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Baltimore Orioles 1-0 on Tuesday night for their eighth victory in a row. Seattle pulled within a half-game of AL West-leading Houston, with the Astros playing at Boston on Tuesday night. Josh Naylor's RBI single in the first inning was all the scoring the Mariners needed. Kirby (8-5) struck out seven without a walk. Eduard Bazardo and Gabe Speier worked the eighth, and Andrés Muñoz labored through the ninth for his 28th save in 34 chances. The Orioles had the top of the order batting in the ninth, but Jackson Holliday grounded softly to the pitcher and Jordan Westburg struck out swinging. Gunnar Henderson walked, and then there was a lengthy delay as Muñoz was tended to on the mound. He eventually took a drink from a cup — as the crowd booed — and then Adley Rutschman singled. Ryan Mountcastle came within a few feet of giving Baltimore its first walk-off win of the year, but his drive to left field curled foul. He then hit a routine grounder to the shortstop. Dean Kremer (8-9) was a hard-luck loser after allowing a run and five hits in eight innings. Cal Raleigh, baseball's current home run leader, went 0 for 4 for Seattle. Kirby allowed only one man to reach scoring position, when Henderson hit a two-out double in the fourth. Rutschman then struck out swinging. The Mariners were only 1 for 2 with runners in scoring position. Key moment Randy Arozarena led off the game with a single, stole second and then scored on Naylor's two-out hit. Key statThe Orioles were shut out for the 13th time this year, their most since they were blanked 15 times while going 47-115 in 2018. Up next Seattle sends RHP Logan Gilbert (3-4) to the mound Wednesday night against LHP Trevor Rogers (5-2) of the Orioles. ___ AP MLB:

Red Sox's Alex Bregman makes history in return to Astros home ballpark, drawing cheers and jeers from fans

Boston Red Sox star Alex Bregman, who won two Series titles with the Houston Astros, had a memorable homecoming. On Monday, Bregman made his way into the visitors clubhouse for the first time. He was greeted with raucous cheers during his first at-bat as a visiting player. The third baseman made the most of the moment by crushing a two-run homer to give Boston an early lead. "Every time you hit a homer in the big leagues, it's pretty special. But to be able to do it first at-bat back here was a pretty cool moment I'll never forget," Bregman said. Bregman's home run was historic. He became the first MLB player in more than six decades to hit a homer in their first career plate appearance on the road against a club they won at least two World Series titles with. Duke Snider is the last player on record to accomplish the feat when he homered in a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1963. By the time Bregman made his way towards home plate for his second at-bat, many of the fans were singing a different tune. Bregman hinted that the boos were expected and overall good-natured. "I loved it," he said. "I was hoping they would." Bregman added a base hit to go 2-for-4 on the night. The Astros also honored Bregman with a video tribute that highlighted some of the special moments he had during his time in the team's uniform. The Astros faithful gave Bregman a standing ovation once the video ended. Bregman said he enjoyed the moment. "Really cool. Great moment," Bregman said. "Just tried to soak it all in. AC [manager Alex Cora] told me to enjoy it, and I really tried to." The Astros ultimately mounted a comeback to take the first game of the three-game series. The Red Sox entered Tuesday's game with 65 wins, while the Astros had 67 games in the win column.

The "Polar Bear" launched his 253rd career home run on Tuesday night to break the tie he was in with Darryl Strawberry for most homers in Mets history. Alonso, the 30-year-old first baseman in his seventh season, accomplished the feat in his 965th game with the Mets. Strawberry played 1,109 games with the Mets over eight seasons. Alonso's record-breaking blast came off the Atlanta Braves' Spencer Strider in the bottom of the third inning Tuesday night, Aug. 12.
