England coach McCullum says paceman Archer 'ready to go' against India
The third match of the series starts at Lord's on Thursday.
With a tight turnaround, both sides are set to change their pace attacks, with India already confirming the return of their strike bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who was rested at Edgbaston.
Barbados-born Archer burst onto the international scene in 2019 but played the last of his 13 Tests in February 2021.
This season the 30-year-old has bowled just 18 first-class overs in a lone appearance for county side Sussex.
But England are giving serious thought to recalling Archer at Lord's as they seek to pep up their attack.
"It's hugely exciting, he's buzzing as well," said McCullum.
"He's obviously been through his injuries and his time out of Test cricket, but we all know what he's capable of achieving and we hope that when the opportunity does arrive for him, he's able to recapture and improve on what he's been able to do already."
One change McCullum is not contemplating is deploying Jacob Bethell in place of specialist off-spinner Shoaib Bashir.
The 21-year-old Bashir's eight wickets in the first two Tests against India have come at a hugely expensive average of nearly 60.
Bethell, a far better batsman than tailender Bashir, bowls left-arm spin but McCullum said that was not how the Warwickshire all-rounder would regain his Test place.
"He's a batting option. He's the next one in if something happens, but we don't crowbar anything," said former New Zealand captain McCullum.
As for Bashir, he added: "We know (Bashir) is not the finished article yet, but I feel like he's getting better and better. As the series wears on, I think we'll see him play quite a big hand."
McCullum said he hoped for a better balance between bat and ball in the remaining three games against India.
The opening two Tests have yielded 11 centuries between the teams, with India captain Shubman Gill taking his series aggregate to an astonishing 585 runs in Birmingham.

Siraj strikes as India seize control of third Test against England
With both teams having made 387 in their first innings, it meant England lead by 98 runs, with just six wickets standing, as India looked to take a 2-1 lead in this five-match series. Fired-up fast bowler Siraj had superb interval figures of 2-11 in seven overs, with the bulk of England's top-order back in the pavilion. But Joe Root, who made a hundred in England's first innings, was still there on 17 not out, with captain Ben Stokes -- without a Test century in more than two years -- unbeaten on two. England resumed on 2-0 with Zak Crawley, who had angered India late Saturday with his time-wasting tactics, alongside opening partner Ben Duckett. Crawley was almost out for his overnight two when an 85 mph Jasprit Bumrah delivery lept off a length and hit his glove, with the world's top-ranked Test bowler unable to take a sliding return catch. Siraj wasted an lbw review on Crawley, who was fortunate when an edged drive off Bumrah flew past third slip. Duckett scooped a four off Siraj but the paceman soon had his revenge when the left-hander, cramped for room, miscued a pull to Bumrah at mid-on to leave England 22-1. Siraj then risked disciplinary action after yelling in Duckett's face and making shoulder contact with the batsman. Neither Crawley nor new batsman Ollie Pope are renowned for their defensive technique. They were both fortunate to survive probing deliveries from outstanding fast bowler Bumrah, who took 5-74 in England's first innings after being rested from India's series-levelling win at Edgbaston. But it was Siraj who struck next when he had Pope lbw after India's review overturned former Australia quick Paul Reiffel's original not out decision. And 42-2 was soon transformed into 50-3. Crawley (22) fell in all-too familiar fashion when edging a drive off a full-length delivery from Nitish Kumar Reddy to Yashasvi Jaiswal -- one of two gullies posted by India in the hope of such a dismissal. Unsurprisingly, given Saturday's incident, Crawley received a verbal volley from Reddy as he left the field. New batsman Harry Brook struck three successive boundaries off Akash Deep -- two scooped fours followed by a thumping straight six over long-off. But fast bowler Deep had the last laugh by knocking over Brook's middle stump as the world's top-ranked Test batsman failed to make contact with an ambitious sweep and fell for 23 as he became the latest England player to contribute to his own downfall. jdg/bsp © 2025 AFP

Kiss backs AUNZ team to continue despite Lions flop
The rugby powerhouses came together for the first time since 1989 to face the might of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales at Adelaide on Saturday. But despite the match being billed as an unofficial fourth Test, it fizzled with the tourists utterly dominant against a squad that boasted 17 internationals. Kiss, who coached the side, said part of the problem was their lack of preparation, with barely a week together in the build-up not sufficient to fine-tune their combinations. "Of course the scoreline can tell one story, but there are other stories within it that are important to recognise as well," he told reporters. "I think I'd have the complete backing of the guys here that that concept should be something that we continue to work on and make it work whenever we can. "I think that the quality of people that you have in the team and three or four weeks to build, I have no doubt that some of the things that probably caught us this week would not have caught us." Their lack of cohesiveness was immediately evident when they were caught napping by a quick Lions' lineout throw that led to a sixth-minute try. Further defensive lapses saw them concede two more tries to trail 17-0 after 20 minutes and there was no way back as the Lions hit their stride. Despite the trouncing, co-captain David Havili also endorsed the concept continuing, with the 30-cap All Blacks centre saying it was a rewarding experience. "I love the way the Aussie and Kiwi boys gelled and whilst we didn't get the performance, we can be proud of what we did this week as Australia and New Zealand," he said. "Whenever the Lions come back to New Zealand, hopefully we can get the same concept and the Aussie boys can come over to New Zealand and do the same thing because it's great to be able to get teams like this off the ground. "It's just been a great, enjoyable week and really refreshing for myself."
