Newcomers fitting in
With one swing, Gwinn Hill became the latest Cowgirl newcomer to come up big this season.
Sunday in the bottom of the seventh, her game-winning home run sent McNeese State to the championship series and stamped Hill's name in the program's history books.
It was the freshman's first career home run in just her 23rd at-bat.
'You could see how hard she worked and stayed with it even when she wasn't playing,' said McNeese head coach James Landreneau. 'You have to be ready when your moment comes.'
Hill is just the latest in a host of first-year players to make big impacts on this McNeese roster. The Cowgirls won their record fourth straight Southland Conference regular-season title behind a bevy of newcomers.
'We have gotten many new players,' said Landreneau. 'They have come in here and contributed right away for us. We had a lot of holes to fill and they have done that.'
Hill's home run highlighted some of those players. She drove in fellow freshman Sara Allen, who had tied the game with a perfect bunt.
Allen was named a catcher on the all-SLC team. That made another freshman, pitcher Kadence Williams, the winner,
Williams has started 22 games this season and is 11-7 with a 3.30 earned run average. Another freshman, right-hander Maddie Taylor, has been even better. She is 17-7 with a 3.35 ERA and was named the league's Pitcher of the Year.
'They both have come a long way this season in their poise and maturity,' said Landreneau. 'They have grown up through adversity and pressure. We have confidence in both of them.'
No freshman has had a better season than Kassidy Chance, the infielder from Sam Houston Hill in Moss Bluff. Chance leads the Cowgirls in hitting at .392 and stolen bases with 18.
Her 67 hits are just one off the lead. Chance won this year's Freshman of the Year honor by the league.
'Kassidy shows a lot of maturity as a hitter,' Landreau said. 'She makes adjustments almost every time up. She knows how to handle the bat.'
Brylie Fontenot has also played in 55 of McNeese's 58 games, starting 50 of them as a true freshman.
Not to be outdone, Nyjah Fontenot, a transfer from Arkansas, is hitting .391 and has 68 hits to lead the Cowgirls. The sophomore from Barbe High returned to Lake Charles after last season.
'All of our freshmen and new players have come in and really made a difference,' said senior shortstop Reese Reyna. 'We had confidence in them because we saw what they could do during the fall.'
This team has experienced more than a few growing pains. During a tough preseason, they lost the lead twice to nationally ranked LSU and even dropped an early conference series at Lamar.
'Player development isn't always pretty,' said Landreneau. 'This has been fun to see the maturity. It has been special.'
McNeese hopes the newcomers have one more big weekend ahead as they host Southeastern in the league's championship series.
The winner gets a ticket to the NCAA Tournament.
'We don't shy away from it, we want to play in the NCAA,' said Landreneu.
McNeese still has that chance thanks to the new kids on the block.

Longhorns trio named to Chuck Bednarik Award watch list
Three Longhorns in the running for prestigious award With the start of the college football season only a few weeks away, the Texas Longhorns are making national headlines. On Monday, the talented trio of Anthony Hill Jr., Colin Simmons, and Michael Taaffe was named to the preseason watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award. The award is given annually to the College Defensive Player of the Year. For many in Austin, the trio's inclusion on the watch list comes as no surprise. Over the last few years, they have made life difficult for offensive coordinators. This marks the second time that Hill is in the running for the Chuck Bednarik Award. In 16 games last season, Hill was one of the best at his position. He led the Longhorns in tackles with 103 and tackles for loss with 16.5. The Texas native also finished third on the team in sacks with eight while adding three double-digit tackling performances to his resume. Due to Hill's play, he earned national praise last October with Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week honors. As Hill was a human highlight reel, he got help from Simmons. In his freshman year, Duncanville High School led the Longhorns in sacks with nine. He also forced three fumbles and recorded 48 total tackles. Simmons proved to be an immediate star and made history. He became the first Longhorns player to win the Shaun Alexander National Freshman of the Year Award. Rounding out the list is Taaffe, who has become a fan favorite. The former walk-on added 78 tackles and two interceptions to his resume last year. He was also the only Longhorns player to record an interception and a forced fumble in the same game. In the postseason, he continued to thrive with a career-high 10 tackles in the Quarterfinal against Arizona State. Regardless of the opponents, Taaffe found a way to make an impact. While the trio's focus will be on helping Texas rack up as many wins as possible, they will also be watching how voting for the award plays out. On November 11th, the semifinalists will be revealed. A few weeks later, the three finalists will be announced before a winner is named on December 11th. The Longhorns are hoping to have a reason to celebrate when a new winner is crowned.

Steelers Linked to Superstar Trade Option to Help Aaron Rodgers
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Throughout the course of the 2025 NFL offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers went all-in on competing for a Super Bowl run. Aaron Rodgers was signed to a one-year deal in free agency, while the team also made trades to acquire DK Metcalf, Jalen Ramsey, and Jonnu Smith. Rodgers is on a one-year deal and plans to retire following the upcoming season. If that is indeed the case, the Steelers may truly have a one-year window to win a championship. Keeping that in mind, it seems likely that Pittsburgh is still open to moves that would improve its Super Bowl chances. One option may come available. Photo byMiami Dolphins superstar wide receiver Tyreek Hill has been mentioned in trade rumors all offseason long. While he's still on the team, that could change. Read more: Browns Insider Reveals Bad News for Shedeur Sanders Recently, ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler spoke out about Hill. He revealed that the elite wide receiver might still be a trade option. "I have talked to a few teams who are at least monitoring his future a little bit," Fowler said. "Could he be a potential trade target? Now, I know the Dolphins earlier this summer were telling teams, 'No, we're not trading Tyreek Hill.' But they just wonder, is he going to be available? "It could be wishful thinking, maybe they want him to be available. But he's a player, when I bring up to teams, 'Hey, who is sort of a trade target you're watching?' — they bring up Tyreek Hill. So, we'll see. He's a big option for Tua [Tagovailoa], that would be a major move if they did move away from him." Who could those teams be that are monitoring his availability? Noah Strackbein of Pittsburgh Steelers on SI has suggested the Steelers as one of them. "Maybe Pittsburgh isn't at the top of the list for Hill, but it's hard to imagine they aren't having some conversation about it," Strackbein wrote. "And if they think they can pull off a deal within the limits they deem acceptable, they could re-ignite their interest in the Dolphins star wide receiver." A wide receiver duo of Metcalf and Hill would be nearly impossible to stop. They would form by far the best wide receiver room that Rodgers has ever worked with. Read more: Bears, Vikings Linked as Possible Trade Partners in Suggested QB Trade Last season with the Dolphins, Hill had a down year. He still caught 81 passes for 959 yards and six touchdowns. Back in 2023, he racked up 119 catches for 1,799 yards and 13 touchdowns, while totaling 119 catches for 1,710 yards and seven touchdowns in 2022. There are few offensive players in the NFL more impactful or dynamic than Hill. If he's made available, it would be shocking if Pittsburgh isn't among the teams pursuing him. Expect to continue hearing rumors about Hill moving into the future. The Steelers are a team worth keeping an eye on as a possible trade suitor. Report: Teams monitoring Dolphins WR Tyreek Hill as trade candidate
As the Miami Dolphins navigate an injury sidelining Tyreek Hill, ESPN reported on Sunday that other NFL teams are monitoring the situation with the All-Pro wide receiver as a potential trade target. Hill is dealing with an oblique injury, head coach Mike McDaniel revealed on Friday, keeping the receiver out of practices and Sunday's preseason opener at the Chicago Bears, which resulted in a 24-24 tie. The 31-year-old Hill has missed only one game in his first three seasons with Miami, catching 319 passes for 4,468 yards and 26 scores in 50 regular-season starts from 2022-24. However, despite that reliability, after the Dolphins suffered a season-ending loss to the New York Jets last winter, Hill told reporters, "I'm out." In the months since, Hill has said he is focused and training hard for the team, while quarterback Tua Tagovailoa said in July that the pair are "still continuing to rebuild" their relationship. ESPN reported that Hill's injury has made his playing status uncertain. While the Dolphins have said they aren't trading him, that hasn't kept other teams from watching how Miami handles their extremely productive receiver going forward. The five-time All-Pro and eight-time Pro Bowl selection has 798 receptions for 11,098 yards and 82 touchdowns in 141 career regular-season games (123 starts) with the Kansas City Chiefs (2016-21) and Dolphins. Hill has another 96 receptions for 1,212 yards and six TDs and 96 yards rushing and one TD in 15 playoff games (14 starts), winning the Super Bowl with the Chiefs in the 2019 season. Kansas City selected Hill in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved
