Pretoria's favourite runner, Irvette Van Zyl, is excitedly looking forward to her Comrades Marathon debut, even though she would rather have started with the Up Run.
Speaking during the elite runners' pre-race conference at a hotel on the Durban beachfront, the Hollywood Athletics Club star was in her usual high spirits, despite being on a table teeming with accomplished gold medallists of The Ultimate Human Race.
Among them were her teammate and defending champion Gerda Steyn, former champion Alexandra Morozova, as well as Carlo Molinaro, Caitriona Jennings, Dominika Stelmach and Courtney Olsen – all of whom have previously finished in the top ten.
It is not surprising, then, that the Olympian and multiple Soweto Marathon champion had a few butterflies in her stomach as she addressed the media.

'Yes, I am nervous,' Van Zyl said, before breaking into her trademark giggle.
'But I am looking forward to it because it's been on my to-do list for a long time. I think it is time now, and hopefully after Sunday I will still have the legs to come back and do the Up Run, because that was the actual plan – to start with the Up Run and not the Down Run. Ja, I am excited, but let's see what happens.'
Van Zyl has been training on the race route in preparation for her debut, but she says she does not see that as giving her any more advantage than the others.
'Ja, I've only done one route-tester and I didn't even finish that one, because that day I only managed to do 45km when the plan was to do 52km. But I'm gonna run and finish on Sunday.'
That much is expected of her, Van Zyl having proven herself as one of the country's best distance runners over many years. Her multiple victories in the gruelling Soweto Marathon suggest she has what it takes to tackle the 90km monster that is the Comrades.
In any case, she has done ultras before – having previously held the world 50km record, and also performing well at the slightly longer 56km Two Oceans Marathon, where she once dipped under the previous record when she finished second to the phenomenal Gerda Steyn.
The two are now teammates at Hollywood Athletics Club, who are expected to dominate the women's race, with Steyn once again the favourite to win the title of the KwaZulu-Natal ultra she loves so much.

Kaizer Chiefs are everywhere — sparking a national dialogue in SA

Celebrating Chiefs' victories — and South African resilience — one tot of tequila at a time. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Kaizer Chiefs — they're everywhere And by everywhere, I mean especially after they won their first two matches of the Betway Premiership. Even more so if you are caught wearing an Orlando Pirates shirt after those victories, with my side of the aisle looking rather grim following the opposite results — two losses in as many matches. Walk around town in the iconic black, the skull and crossbones embroidered on your breast, and you are more than likely to get the customary greeting — arms crossed at the wrist — or a sardonic smile from those who follow the Glamour Boys, challenging you with an 'Amakhosi for life.' Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad loading Find yourself in a pub, and you might just be forced to shoot a grim shot of tequila, crowned by a slice of orange, to the health and victory of Chiefs — as was the case this past Wednesday at a launch event wholly unrelated to Premier Soccer League matters. That's the type of national dialogue I enjoy … the one that reminds me that, when it comes to South Africans, we are all very much the same despite creed and politics; and in spite of what the toxic cesspools of social media will spout, or our political leaders might blast over a loudhailer. And it doesn't take an eye-watering amount of money to inspire it. Truth be told, domestic football needs Chiefs to be successful. They remain the biggest brand — the marquee sporting name in this country — regardless of the success of Mamelodi Sundowns or Orlando Pirates, the Springboks lifting two consecutive Rugby World Cups, or the Proteas finally getting their hands on a major ICC trophy … cup … mace … thing. Despite the PSL's shoddy administration — poor officiating, suspect scheduling, last season's Royal AM saga, and clubs being sold like cookies at a church bazaar — football in this country continues to thrive. That resilience is mirrored across other major sporting codes, which survive despite questionable boardroom decisions and a lack of adequate state support. All goals scored within regulation time contribute towards our Goals For Charity initiative. After our Quarter Final round, we're sitting at a whopping 15 goals! The #MTN8 Defending Champions, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns both contributed 6 of those goals! 🔥 How… — MTN8 Wafa Wafa! (@MTN8) August 14, 2025 If our football can flourish under such conditions, it's no surprise that South Africans as a people continue to persevere through far greater challenges — a resilience that defines us beyond the pitch. Our sovereignty might be undermined by nations with ridiculous foreign policy agendas, while graft cripples infrastructure and service delivery, yet no nation can pull itself up from the bootstraps like we do. If recent sporting events have proven anything, it's this: we South Africans are a bunch of champions, consistently let down only by the fumbling ineptitude of our leaders across the political spectrum — right to left. On Saturday, that camaraderie will once again be on display.

Gallants prove their resilience under new coach Lafitte

Marumo Gallants coach Alexandre Lafitte pleased with his sides start to the season. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Marumo Gallants are emerging as the team to beat after another impressive 2–1 win over Betway Premiership title favourites Orlando Pirates on Tuesday. Goals from Daniel Msendami and Jaisen Clifford fueled the Bloemfontein-based outfit's spirited comeback at a packed Dr. Petrus Molemela Stadium—after Patrick Maswanganyi had put the visitors ahead early in the first half. Siwelele sa Marumo have been impressive in the two matches they have played so far in the league, and they had to withstand a relentless onslaught from the Buccaneers which they successfully managed to resist picking up a crucial equaliser on the brink of halftime. Their surge of momentum began in the second half as they grew in confidence, while the Sea Robbers—who had started brightly—lost their rhythm and failed to create any chances in yet another disappointing showing for them. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad loading New coach Alexandre Lafitte has certainly hit the ground running, and having secured back-to-back wins after their opening day 2-1 win against Richards Bay, he is obviously pleased with how his side executed their game plan against the title favourites. 'It's a fantastic result. I am happy for the fans and the team,' Lafitte said after the match. 'It was a difficult game, they are a fantastic team, the game plan was good, because the objective was that when you don't have the ball, press high, and when you have the ball play a bit more. 'The first goal was good, and in the second half we had more possession and we used it well.' With the MTN8 taking centre stage this weekend, Lafitte and his charges will receive an extra weekend's rest. They will next face AmaZulu in a league encounter in just over a week. Interestingly, the Bloemfontein outfit has delivered their best football in the second halves of both their opening games, scoring decisive goals late in each contest. Lafitte credited this resilience and challenged his squad to keep evolving, stressing that they are not yet a finished product. 'It was a good performance and result for us, it's two games in a row with us scoring after 90 minutes and I think that it's good for us mentally. Moving forward it will be important to improve when we have the ball but I think we had a good start. 'I think it's important to have a structure, to break the space and find players free, and we will need to work for that for a long time. Sometimes you will make mistakes, but I would prefer if we made mistakes and learn from them and improve the quality of our game.' New centre-forward Clifford scored his first goal for the club—and, as one of only a few new recruits in a major squad overhaul, he provides a perfect example of Lafitte's vision. The coach also confirmed the club is still in the market for reinforcements before the transfer window closes. 'I am happy to be here, we have been working with the President to improve the squad, when the time is right, we will look into two or three players, a defender, midfielder and striker.'

Klaas balances motherhood and cricket as Proteas target World Cup glory

Masabata Klaas credits her mother's support for helping her balance parenting and international cricket. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Masabata Klaas is one of the few players in the Proteas Women's side who are juggling motherhood and the high demands of international cricket. The 34-year-old has been playing at the highest level for almost 15 years, having made her international debut in 2010, making her a member of the experienced group in the Proteas Women's side. Her experience comes with responsibility, as she has to set the standard for the youngsters coming through — a feat that can be very demanding for any player, let alone a parent. However, Klaas told Independent Media that the presence of her own mother in her life allows her to continue chasing her dream of representing the country at the highest level. 📸 Day 1 at Training Camp Before diving into the intensity of preparations for the upcoming season, our Proteas Women kicked things off with some fun and games, making use of recreational activities to strengthen team bonds and build connections. 💚🏏#WozaNawe — Proteas Women (@ProteasWomenCSA) July 29, 2025 Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Her dream has evolved from representing the country to being an inspiration and example to her daughter that it is possible to be a parent and have a career simultaneously. 'Balancing cricket and being a parent is not easy, but in my case it is a lot better because I still have my mum in my life, who's helping me with a lot of things in terms of looking after my daughter and making sure that I also carry on with what I love, which is cricket,' Klaas said, in an exclusive interview. 'After giving birth, you just need to stay at home for a couple of months, if not years. But I was lucky — I had to sit out for about a year, with the help of my mum.' Klaas is one of the few active Proteas players who knows how tough life was before the South African women's domestic structure turned professional two years ago. She said that in the pre-professional era, they did not have fitness trainers or nutritionists to help them prepare for what was required at international level. Now, with women's domestic cricket heading into its third professional season, Klaas believes the transition from domestic to international cricket has become much smoother. 'Back then, players did not have someone to help them with fitness or nutrition. However, after the structure was made professional, players have access to a gym and to professionals who help them with their fitness,' said Klaas. 'The new structure also makes the job of the national coach much easier because, when you get selected to the national team, you have to reach the requirements. "With the professional structure now, it's a lot easier because the girls are well conditioned and understand what is required in a professional set-up, in terms of fitness and understanding their game in depth — which is what is needed in international cricket. 'Whereas back then, such things were not there — that's why a lot of players struggled to get to the national team, because when they got there they were overwhelmed by the intensity, purely because they had not been introduced to that kind of intensity at domestic level.'
