TTD suspends four employees in Andhra over non-Hindu allegations

Tirupati, Jul 19 (PTI) The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), the official custodian of Sri Venkateswara temple here, has suspended four employees based on allegations that they are non-Hindus and practising other religions.
The temple body suspended Deputy Executive Engineer (quality control) B Elizar, staff nurse of BIRRD Hospital, S Rosi, grade-1 pharmacist of BIRRD Hospital, M Premavati and G Asuntha from SV Ayurveda Pharmacy.
'TTD has suspended four of its employees on the grounds of allegations that they practise other faiths," said an official press release on Saturday.
These employees are believed to have violated the institution's code of conduct and acted irresponsibly in their duties while representing and working for a Hindu religious organisation, it said.
After examining the report submitted by the TTD Vigilance Department and other evidence, departmental action was taken against them as per the rules and the four employees were immediately suspended, the release added. PTI STH ROH

Govt curbing drug peddling near edu institutions: CM
Panaji: The six cannabis plants confiscated in the first half of the year in Panaji have been sent for analysis to the Botanical Survey of India in Pune, chief minister Pramod Sawant said. The chief minister stated that regular monitoring is conducted to ensure that ganja plants are not cultivated in the state, preventing their supply to students at educational institutions. State govt has directed the staff of the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) to identify these plants and inform the local police for further action. 'Two different cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act are registered at the Panaji police station,' Sawant said. 'Currently, both cases are under investigation, with suspected live ganja plants seized from a public place.' Sawant mentioned that no specific hotspots have been identified as drug trafficking sites in the state. However, regular patrolling is maintained, and whenever any information is received, cases are registered against the cultivators of such plants. He said that surveillance is maintained across areas, and mass awareness has been created among the public. 'Regular police patrolling is carried out to prevent the cultivation of ganja plants, ensuring that they are not made available at schools and other educational institutions, as well as anywhere in the state,' Sawant said. In addition, awareness campaigns and workshops regarding cannabis plants and other drugs are conducted at schools and other educational institutions to sensitise students to the harmful effects of drug use, the CM said. 'It has been decided during the narco-coordination meeting to create awareness for the sanitary staff of the CCP regarding the growth of such plants in their areas and to identify these plants and inform the local police for further action,' the CM said. Over the past three and a half years, Goa police registered 14 narcotics cases and arrested 18 persons for being in illegal possession of drugs near schools and colleges. Sawant said school principals are encouraged to report any such matters to local police for necessary action. Of the 18 arrested, three persons are from Goa, 12 are non-Goans, and three are foreigners.

Minor crashes father's car in Delhi, e-rickshaw driver killed
An e-rickshaw driver died after a car being driven by a 16-year-old boy rammed into his three-wheeler in southwest Delhi's Dwarka, police said on Saturday. "The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to severe head injuries. He was declared unfit to give a statement before he passed away," said a senior police officer. He added that initial findings suggest the car was being driven at a high speed and flipped before colliding with the rickshaw. The police said the vehicle, a private car owned by the boy's father, was being driven without a valid licence. The minor reportedly took the car out without permission, the officer added. "The impact of the crash left the car overturned on one side of the road, while the e-rickshaw came to a halt diagonally on the opposite side. A forensic crime team visited the scene, and both vehicles were seized for further examination," he said. A case has been registered under BNS sections 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 125 (act endangering life or personal safety of others), and 106 (causing death by negligence), the police said. "The investigation is ongoing. Since the boy is a minor, legal action will be initiated against the father for allowing him to drive the car," the officer added.

Congress seeks court-monitored CBI probe into organic cotton scam in MP
New Delhi, Jul 26 (PTI) The Congress on Saturday demanded a court-monitored CBI probe into an alleged scam in the sale of normal cotton as organic cotton in Madhya Pradesh. Former Madhya Pradesh chief minister and senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh alleged that India's image is being hurt globally as the country has lost credibility in the certification of organic products. Addressing a press conference here, Singh alleged that the scam is estimated to be of the tune of Rs 2.1 lakh crore in the name of selling normally produced cotton as organic cotton. There was no immediate comment available from the Madhya Pradesh government. Giving details, Singh said that in 2001, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry launched the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP), which is implemented by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA). He said its objective is to certify and regulate the export of organic products. Under this framework, NPOP accredits certification bodies (CBs), which in turn verify internal control systems (ICS). The ICSs are groups of 25 to 500 farmers who grow organic cotton. As of 2025, there are approximately 6,046 ICSs and 35 CBs. Singh, however, alleged that most farmers who are shown as registered under ICSs are neither growing organic cotton nor are they aware of their presence in the system. 'In short, ICS groups have deliberately committed fraud by adding farmers' names to obtain transaction certificates," Singh alleged. With the result, he claimed, while the farmers struggle to get fair prices for their produce, some powerful traders are selling non-organic (Bt) cotton as 'organic', earning up to six times the profit. While these exporters are also committing massive tax and GST evasion, at the international level, he claimed that India is now being seen as a 'hub of fraud in the organic market", leading to cancellations of recognition by global agencies. He also claimed that raids on just two commercial entities uncovered Rs 750 crore in GST evasion, revealing a Rs 7,500 crore scam from just these two, as tax evasion accounted for only 5 per cent of the total fraud amount. Referring to the international fallout, the former chief minister claimed that in October 2020, GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) caught 'fake transaction certificates" in India, banned 11 companies, and revoked the accreditation of a major certifier. In June 2021, the USDA (USA) ended India's automatic recognition for organic certification, Singh claimed, while revealing that in November 2021, the EU cancelled the recognition of five Indian certifiers due to restricted chemicals found in supposedly organic products. Singh said on August 27, 2024, he highlighted the organic cotton fraud in Madhya Pradesh through a letter to the prime minister. The Congress leader demanded the constitution of a special investigation team (SIT) led by the CBI under the supervision of a sitting high court judge. Seeking transparent inspections by the certifying bodies, he also demanded fair compensation for the exploited farmers.
