We often visit the local market where we regularly buy vegetables. One day, however, to my surprise, the stalls were almost empty. Mr Garud, the vegetable vendor I knew well, had always provided a fresh supply.
Curious about the shortage, we wandered further and discovered a weekly vegetable market. The service road was lined with vendors who brought their produce directly from local farmers. They called out to potential buyers with enticing pitches, advertising their goods as "Gavran, organic, and indigenous." One shop on the right featured a variety of mushrooms, red and yellow peppers, baby corn, broccoli, celery, and many other exotic vegetables.
Globalisation has brought the world and its cultures closer together, particularly through cuisine. This has strengthened connections among different cultures. Nowadays, our children often prefer exotic foods over traditional local Indian dishes. For instance, while Poli Bhaji is considered a standard meal in Maharashtra, a Frankie features the same vegetables wrapped in a chapatti roll, topped with salads and cheese.

We now see finger millet, pearl millet, and various grains being used in Hakka noodles, and although spaghetti is Italian, its seasoning often has Indian influences.
The market was bustling with adults, who crowded around a stall selling leafy vegetables, including beetroots with their long reddish-green leaves, and radishes tied in threes with tufts of leaves. An energetic young vendor clad in blue gloves managed the large crowd, ensuring everyone's needs were met.
Nearby, a corn shop offered its produce, while various vegetable vendors lined the market. The vendor on the extreme right had fresh cabbage with a tuft of hanging leaves, attracting many buyers.
We were paying attention to the vendor as she elevated her pitch when we heard a young boy speaking to his mother. 'Why are you taking this cabbage? Will you make a roll out of it?' His mother replied dryly, 'I will be making just Poli Bhaji.'
The boy looked at the cabbage in disgust and exclaimed, 'Drop it there, we don't want cabbage!' Despite his mother's smile as she clung onto the cabbage, the boy sulked and continued to ask her not to buy it. She tried to convince him of the benefits of cabbage, but nothing seemed to work.
Some of us turned to support the lady, asking, 'Will you be making spring rolls from this cabbage, or ravioli?' The boy smiled and replied, 'We do not add cabbage to our noodles or spring rolls…'
With a whole lot of YouTube recipes, he knew everything.
It reminded me of the time I went to a restaurant with my grandniece, who loves noodles for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. She has a knack for recognising her favourite brand. When the waiter brought her a bowl of noodles, she immediately tasted the first spoonful and looked up, saying, 'This isn't Magi noodles.'
The waiter smiled and replied, 'This is Hakka noodles, authentic noodles.'
Some children view noodles with vegetables as a tragedy, believing that plain noodles are the best option.
A little boy's defiance towards cabbage drew a crowd of ladies around him and his mother. Some of them scolded him in Marathi, saying, "Food doesn't need to be tasty; it needs to be nutritious." The boy responded, "If that's the case, then you should eat it."
We were generally concerned about the discussion until the boy suddenly spotted his teacher in the market. He jumped for joy and greeted her enthusiastically. Meanwhile, his mother held up the cabbage and looked at him with pleading eyes. The teacher, an energetic lady, quickly realised the situation. She patted the boy on the back and said, "Our children are the best; they know what to eat. Santosh will eat the cabbage, but don't forget to make a puri bhaji for him.
" Both the mother and Santosh smiled, feeling thrilled, the boy kept gazing at his teacher, while the mother began paying for the cabbage.

In modern times, it has been considered that 80% women are pursuing 20% men. However, if a new study is to go by, the tables have always been turned. In a study published in the PLOS One journal, international researchers analysed the behaviour of almost 3,000 heterosexual users of a Czech dating app. They found that men expressed interest in women who were more desirable than themselves, while women usually pursued men of a similar level of desirability. Here, the desirability was measured through the number of swipes a user received from people on the app. The app had more male users, meaning that female users "generally ranked more highly in this hierarchy." And despite having the clear upper hand, women sometimes "chose slightly less desirable partners on average." But, as is the law of romance, successful matches only happened among people with similar levels of desirability. Chaos unfolded onboard a Mumbai-Varanasi Indigo flight late Saturday evening after the aircraft faced a two hour-delay in take-off. The flight, carrying 176 passengers, was facing technical snag.(HT Photo) In a purported video being circulated on social media, passengers can be seen agitated while the flight crew is trying to pacify them. The crew can be seen requesting passengers to be seated patiently while the ground staff completed the checks for the aircraft. At one point, the airhostess says that filming inside the aircraft was not allowed. However, the passengers retort saying that recording the video was important, and citing safety concerns in the aircraft. The flight, carrying 176 passengers, was facing technical snag. According to flightradar24, the flight 6E 5028 took off from the Mumbai airport at 9.53 pm, over two hours after its departure time. It landed in Varanasi at 11.40 pm. 'Your flight has not taken off for the past hour, aircraft making sounds and you are telling us that shooting a video is not allowed?' a passenger questioned. Another asked, 'Does our life have no value?' Following this, the airhostess folds her hands and tells the fliers that all checks on the aircraft had been completed. The pilot assured the passengers that the flight was ready for take-off in ten minutes, and said they had faced the delay because every system was checked thoroughly. 'If you do not resort to chaos, I guarantee you we will all reach Varanasi,' the pilot said, while some of the passengers chanted 'Har Har Mahadev'. 'You have to trust me that if there was any issue, I would not fly this plane,' Captain Urvashi said, adding that the aircraft was fit to fly.

Food experts have warned for months of the risk of famine in Gaza, where Israel has restricted aid because it says Hamas siphons off goods to help bolster its rule, without providing evidence for that claim. Jordan announced it had carried out three airdrops over the skies of Gaza, including one in cooperation with the United Arab Emirates. It said the cargo planes had dropped 25 tons of food and supplies on several locations in Gaza. The United Nations ' food agency welcomed the steps to ease aid restrictions, but said a broader ceasefire was needed to ensure goods reached everyone in need in Gaza. UNICEF called it "an opportunity to save lives." Shaina Low, communications adviser for the Norwegian Refugee Council, said the latest steps remained "far from adequate to address the staggering needs in Gaza." She called for the opening of all crossings and unrestricted humanitarian access into Gaza. Dr Muneer al-Boursh, director general of Gaza's Health Ministry, called for a flood of medical supplies and other goods to help treat child malnutrition. "This (humanitarian) truce will mean nothing if it doesn't turn into a real opportunity to save lives," he said. "Every delay is measured by another funeral." Negotiating teams recalled The local pause in fighting came days after ceasefire efforts between Israel and Hamas appeared to be in doubt. Israel and the US recalled their negotiating teams from Qatar on Thursday, blaming Hamas, and Israel said it was considering "alternative options" to ceasefire talks with the militant group. Israel says it is prepared to end the war if Hamas surrenders, disarms and goes into exile, something the group has refused to agree to. Senior Hamas official Mahmoud Merdawi said that Israel's change of tack on the humanitarian crisis amounted to an acknowledgement that there were starving Palestinians in Gaza and that the move was meant to improve its international standing and not save lives. He said that Israel "will not escape punishment and will inevitably pay the price for these criminal practices." Famine-like conditions After ending the latest ceasefire in March, Israel cut off the entry of food, medicine, fuel and other supplies completely to Gaza for 2 ½ months, saying it aimed to pressure Hamas to release hostages. Under international pressure, Israel slightly eased the blockade in May. Since then, it has allowed in around 4,500 trucks for the UN and other aid groups to distribute. The average of 69 trucks a day, however, is far below the 500 to 600 trucks a day the UN says are needed for Gaza. The UN says it has been unable to distribute much of the aid because hungry crowds and gangs take most of it from its arriving trucks. As a way to divert aid delivery away from the UN's control, Israel has backed the US-registered Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which in May opened four centres distributing boxes of food. More than 1,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces since May while trying to get food, mostly near those new aid sites, the UN human rights office says. Israel has railed against the UN throughout the war, saying that its system allowed Hamas to steal aid. The UN denies that claim and says its delivery mechanism was the best way to bring aid to Palestinians. The military said the new steps were made in coordination with the UN and other humanitarian groups. Much of Gaza's population, squeezed by fighting into ever tinier patches of land, now relies on aid. The World Food Programme said that a third of Gaza's population of around 2 million were not eating for days and nearly half a million were enduring famine-like conditions. It said it had enough food in or on its way to the region to feed all of Gaza for nearly three months. At least 38 killed in latest strikes The Awda Hospital in Nuseirat said Israeli forces killed at least 13 people, including four children and a woman, and wounded 101 as they were headed toward a GHF aid distribution site in central Gaza. GHF, which denies involvement in any of the violence near its sites, said there were no incidents at or near its sites. The military said it was looking into the report. Ten other people were killed seeking aid in multiple areas of Gaza, including northwestern Gaza City, where more than 50 people were wounded, hospital officials and medics said. The military, which had no immediate comment on the strikes, announced Sunday that two more soldiers were killed in Gaza, bringing the total number to 898 since October 7, 2023. The war began with Hamas' October 2023 attack on southern Israel, when militants killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took 251 hostages. Hamas still holds 50 hostages, more than half of them believed to be dead. Israel's retaliatory offensive has killed more than 59,700 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. Its count doesn't distinguish between militants and civilians, but the ministry says that more than half of the dead are women and children. The ministry operates under the Hamas government. The UN and other international organisations see it as the most reliable source of data on casualties.
