Do you have this ultra rare 50p that sold for £198 after bidding war? Key details to check
The coin sold for a huge £198.20 on eBay after receiving 20 bids.
1
It is a 2009 London 2012 Olympic Games Blue Peter 50p, which came sealed in its original packaging.
The commemorative design was brought out to mark the 2012 London Olympics.
Only 19,722 of these Blue Peter branded coin packs were issued by the Royal Mint and they were never brought into circulation.
It's possible some have entered circulation since then, but they are still an ultra rare find.
The coin, dated 2009, was the first of 29 officially licensed London 2012 Olympics coins.
Its design was created by eight-year-old Florence Jackson from Bristol, who had entered her high jump-themed drawing into a Blue Peter competition.
Her design was picked from an impressive 17,000 entries.
She is still the youngest Brit to have her design used on a coin.
These coins have been selling for large amounts of money on auction sites like eBay.
One of them sold for a huge £320 earlier this year.
Five 50ps that could earn you thousands
More Olympic coins were brought into circulation in 2011 - including the Athletics 50p.
Some 2.2million of the Athletics 50ps were issued in 2011, meaning these are much less rare and worth a lot less.
So if you have this coin and want to check if it's worth much, you'll just need to check the year on it.
Other Olympic coins to collect depict sports such as Taekwondo, Wheelchair Rugby, Gymnastics, Cycling, Boxing, and Archery.
What makes a coin rare?
If the right buyer comes along, rare coins can sell for hundreds or even thousands of pounds.
Coins are generally considered rare if they have a low mintage figure - meaning not many of them were created.
You can usually find out the mintage of a coin by checking The Royal Mint 's official website.
Some coins will also be classed as rare if there was a mistake made during the manufacturing process.
These are often known as "error" coins.
In some cases there may only be a handful of these available, making them incredibly rare and valuable.
For example, one error coin dubbed the "lines over face" 50p, has been known to sell for £1,500 in the past.
Most rare and valuable 50p coins
WE reveal the Royal Mint's most rare and valuable 50p coins in circulation.
Triathlon
Minted in 2011, the Triathlon 50p depicts the same sport which featured in the 2012 Olympics.
There are more than 1,160,000 of the coins in circulation.
With over 200million 50ps circulating in the UK, that makes this coin quite a rare find.
The highest recent sale we've found on eBay recently was £30 on June 21.
Judo
Judo is a popular sport that involves grappling with your opponent.
But despite the design, it's not so easy to get a hold of this coin, of which there are just 1,161,500 in circulation.
The piece was designed by David Cornell after he won a national competition.
It was minted in 2011 and the highest bid we've seen on eBay was for £17.95 on June 21.
Wrestling
Wrestling was one of the first Olympic sports so it's not surprising that it features on one of the 50p pieces.
The 2011 coin was designed by Roderick Enriquez, a graphic designer from Hammersmith, London.
We've seen it sell for as much as £15 online so is worth digging around for.
In recent months, one was sold on eBay for £11.95 on June 18.
Football
Of all the coins created to commemorate the 2012 Olympic Games, the 50p Football is among the rarest.
It features an explanation of the controversial offside rule on it, with 1,125,000 produced.
One sold for £20 on eBay on June 11, although it has been known to go for as much as £75 in the past.
Kew Gardens
The Kew Gardens 50p is the rarest of all the 50p pieces, with only 210,000 in circulation.
They have been known to sell for as much as £895 on eBay before.
The design was created by Christopher Le Brun RA and features the famous Chinese Pagoda with a leafy chamber that twists around the tower.
The coin often sparks the interest of new coin collectors due to its rarity.
The highest sale we found in recent weeks was £142 on June 22 with 23 bids.
How to sell a rare coin
There are three main ways you can sell rare coins - on eBay, Facebook, or in an auction.
If you're selling on Facebook, make sure you post good quality pictures and price the piece as accurately as possible.
Some platforms like eBay will let you see how much the same coin has sold for previously.
Just search for the coin and then filter the results by sold items only.
Alternatively you can sell at auction, which you can organise with The Royal Mint's Collectors Service.
It has a team of experts who can help you authenticate and value your coin.
You can get in touch via email and a member of the valuation team will get back to you.
You will be charged for the service though - the cost varies depending on the size of your collection.

Vonn brings in Svindal as coach for Olympic comeback
Aug 6 (Reuters) - American Lindsey Vonn has brought Norwegian former Olympic champion Aksel Lund Svindal into her coaching team, she said on Wednesday. The 40-year-old Vonn, who has 82 World Cup wins to her name and counts one gold among her three Olympic medals, retired from the sport in 2019 before announcing in November she was planning a comeback in a bid to ski at next year's Milano-Cortina Games. She earned a second-place finish in the super-G at the World Cup Finals in March. "Excited to finally announce that Olympic Champion Aksel Lund Svindal will be joining my team as a coach and equipment strategist for the upcoming season," Vonn said in a post on Instagram. Svindal won gold in the super-G at the 2010 Vancouver Games and in the downhill at Pyeongchang in 2018. He also claimed five world championship titles before retiring in 2019.

Jake Paul faces competition for Anthony Joshua fight as new rival emerges
A showdown between Joshua and Paul could take place as early as next year - but a top heavyweight contender could ruing the YouTuber-turned-boxer's plans Tony Yoka is eager to derail Jake Paul 's plans to face Anthony Joshua by challenging the two-time heavyweight champion himself. Yoka - who claimed Olympic gold in Rio - appeared destined for greatness following his professional debut in 2017, but the previously unbeaten heavyweight endured three consecutive losses to Martin Bakole, Carlos Takam and Ryad Merhy. He has since clawed his way back into contention with victories over Amine Boucetta, Lamah Griggs and Arslan Yallyev. Following those three triumphs, the Frenchman secured a lucrative deal with Queensberry Promotions as he seeks to re-establish himself as a heavyweight threat. After the announcement, speculation regarding a potential clash between Yoka and Joshua began to swirl, reports All Out Fighting. The French heavyweight was quick to respond to those rumours, telling BoxNation: "I mean, I heard some rumours about it. I believe in my team. "I believe in Queensberry, my manager and my coach to do the best fights for me. I'm not in any talks with him so I don't know what's going on. What I know is that I'm getting ready for anybody and after this big win, if they ask or propose me to fight Joshua, of course. That would be a great, great fight for me to take." Joshua has remained inactive since his crushing loss to Daniel Dubois in September 2024 - but is eyeing a comeback before the end of the year. While Yoka reckons Joshua might have bigger fish to fry, the 33-year-old Frenchman would jump at the chance to square off against 'AJ' without hesitation. "There is a history behind it as two Olympic gold medalists. I think that's something that makes sense," he continued. "I saw him fight some guys that I didn't even know. I think it was just before Otto Wallin he fought a guy, I don't know the guy [Joshua beat Jermaine Franklin and Robert Helenius]. I understand that he lost against Dubois last year. They might want to do something like Joshua-Fury or whatever. You want a fight before that, I'm here. You don't have to look like too far from there." A potential clash between Joshua and Yoka could deal a massive setback to Paul. The YouTuber-turned-boxer and the British heavyweight have verbally committed to a bout. During a recent Sky Sports interview, Paul's promoter and business partner - Nakisa Bidarian - disclosed that he's in talks with Eddie Hearn and that the encounter could materialise much earlier than expected. "I think the fight can absolutely happen," he said. "I'm looking at it as Jake versus Joshua, which is quite biblical, and it's quite impactful in many ways. I think size wise, we can get comfortable with it, and I think experience wise, Jake is learning very fast and growing, and Joshua is a little long in the tooth. So it could be a very interesting matchup, and we're actively discussing it with Matchroom. "I think we're looking at it happening at the start of 2026. It's public that AJ was taking a little time away, I think he had a little surgery. So once he's ready, and once Jake is ready, we're going to squarely focus on that. It's a fight that Jake wants to do, and that's a discussion we've had at length, and he feels very confident about where he is in his career and his chances of upsetting Anthony Joshua." When is Jake Paul's next fight? After making a successful comeback to the ring in June, Paul is keen to keep the momentum going. The American is now able to compete for a world title, having been ranked in the WBC's cruiserweight listings after his victory over Chavez Jr. The manager of the 28-year-old fighter revealed that his client is keen to compete for a world title 'as soon as possible'. However, he concedes it's unlikely to be his next match, considering the current landscape at 200lbs. "Absolutely [he will fight again this year]. November or December," Bidarian informed Ariel Helwani when queried about Paul's forthcoming plans. "I'm meeting him tonight for dinner, and we'll discuss [his next opponent]. The only certainty right now is that Jake is eager to compete for a belt at the earliest opportunity. I need to have a chat with him, I reckon it's a tall order this year [to box for a world title]. Badou Jack is the one he's most interested in taking on, but he's obligated to a rematch with the bloke he just defeated [Noel Mikaelian] for the WBC. I'm not sure if a title bout is feasible this year, but we'll see."

Trump gets more sports medals he didn't earn as his collection grows with Olympic triumphs
President Donald Trump was gifted a set of Olympic medals on Tuesday while announcing the 2028 Summer Olympic task force – the latest sports medal given to the president to add to his growing collection. After signing an executive order establishing the White House task force to help oversee arrangements for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, chair Casey Wasserman presented Trump with a shiny surprise. 'In 1984, as you know, we hosted the Olympics in Los Angeles,' Wasserman said, mentioning that former president Ronald Reagan was in power at the time of that event. 'You will preside over our games, so we have for you a full set of the '84 original medals,' Wasserman added. Trump held up the display, which contained bronze, silver, and gold medals. 'Can I say I won them athletically?' Trump joked. 'That would be a great honor.' The president is famously a fan of medals and awards. He has often boasted about winning golf club championships, and recently has pushed to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Last month, the president faced criticism after appearing to slyly pocket a FIFA Club World Cup medal after the president of FIFA gave him it to view. As the president was walking off stage, he appeared to put the medal in his jacket pocket. In 2019, the president made an offhand comment, which seemed to be a joke, that he wanted to gift himself the Medal of Honor – the highest military decoration award given to members of the Armed Forces for acts of valor. Even in his new administration, Trump has reportedly considered ways to incorporate awards. Two members of a pro-natalist community, Simone and Malcom Collins, had reportedly pitched an executive order awarding mothers who have six or more children a 'National Medal of Motherhood' – something Trump reportedly took interest in. While Trump pushes to win international awards, such as the Nobel Peace Prize, for now, he'll have to settle for sports awards given as a courtesy. The U.S. is co-hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup as well as hosting the 2028 Summer Olympics. Both events are occurring under the Trump administration. On Tuesday, Trump announced he would chair the White House task force to oversee the country's organization leading up to the Summer Olympics. While it is largely a ceremonial role, the president has promoted his role in the Olympics heavily and said he would ensure its policies align with his administration.
