Palace claim sporting merit 'meaningless' after Europa League demotion
Premier League side Crystal Palace said on Tuesday that sporting merit had been "rendered meaningless" by UEFA's decision to demote them from the Europa League. The FA Cup winners have been forced to play in this season's Conference League after European football's governing body UEFA ruled in July that American businessman John Textor had control or influence at both Palace and French club Lyon. Palace tried to have the punishment overturned, but on Monday the Lausanne-based Court of Arbitration for Sport announced the Premier League club had lost their appeal. Nottingham Forest are set to take Palace's spot in the Europa League. Palace chairman Steve Parish had already been vocal in his criticism after the initial demotion and, with their fate sealed, the south London club again blasted the decision. "At a time when we should be celebrating our victory in the Community Shield at Wembley, the decision by UEFA and followed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport shows that sporting merit is rendered meaningless," Palace said in a statement. "When we won the FA Cup against Manchester City on that momentous day in May, our manager and players earned the right to play Europa League football. "We have been denied that opportunity. It appears that certain clubs, organisations and individuals have a unique privilege and power. "This growing and unhealthy influence has shattered the hopes and dreams of Crystal Palace supporters, and does not bode well for aspirational teams all over Europe competing to progress when rules and sanctions are unevenly applied in the most flagrant way." UEFA regulations state that where one or more clubs are found to have shared ownership, they cannot play in the same competition, and Lyon held on to the Europa League spot by virtue of their higher league position. Palace missed a March 1 UEFA deadline for team in multi-club groups to change their ownership structure. Textor has since sold his shares to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson, a takeover completed in late July. "Multi-club structures hide behind the charade of a 'blind trust' while clubs such as ours, who have no connection to another club whatsoever, are prevented from playing in the same competition," the Palace statement added. "To compound the injustice, clubs that appear to have huge informal arrangements with each other are also allowed to participate and even possibly play against each other. Palace added that the process was "designed to severely restrict and, in our case, make it almost impossible to receive a fair hearing". Palace beat Premier League champions Liverpool in the Community Shield at the weekend, winning a penalty shootout after the match finished 2-2 in 90 minutes. smg/gj

REPORT: Tottenham also moving for Palace's Eberechi Eze
The dream signing of many Tottenham Hotspur supporters this summer may be back on the right track. According to Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham Hotspur are now working on a deal that would bring 27-year-old Crystal Palace attacking midfielder Eberechi Eze to White Hart Lane. Notably, this deal is said to be entirely separate from the one announced yesterday that linked Spurs with a move for 20-year-old Manchester City winger Savinho. Eze has been high on the lists of Tottenham fans for a couple of seasons now, but for a while it's looked like he was heading to Arsenal. It's not clear what, if anything, has changed — whether Arsenal has moved on to other targets, or if there was something else going on what prevented them from sealing the deal, but it could be to Tottenham's benefit. But first, Romano appears to be incorrect about the expiration of Eze's £68m release clause, according to Dom Smith. Instead, Eze's clause is apparently still active and doesn't expire until this Friday, which could go a long way towards explaining Tottenham's sudden interest. That said, because it's Tottenham I'd also imagine these negotiations are much more about seeing if Spurs can get their man for less than the release clause than pushing their chips onto the table. This all has the feel of a 'Fabio Paratici scattergun' method, doesn't it? That said, what is NOT clear is whether the Savinho and Eze deals are mutually exclusive. If they are, as much as I like Eze as a player I'm not sure it'd be the best deal Spurs could make. Passing up a 20-year-old Brazilian winger with good underlying numbers and an incredibly high ceiling for a player seven years older playing at his physical peak right now for approximately the same amount of money doesn't feel like a particularly good choice. On the other hand, we know Spurs have at bare minimum £65m to spend since that was what they offered to purchase Morgan Gibbs-White from Nottingham Forest last month. Purchasing both Savinho and Eze, along with another central defender, still leaves Spurs pretty woefully absent of central midfield passing, but it would at least be a pretty significant statement of intent. Let's see where this goes.

Brentford hit Dango Ouattara stumbling block amid Arnaud Kalimuendo interest
Brentford's move for Dango Ouattara has stalled as Bournemouth insist on signing a replacement for the winger before sanctioning a sale. Ouattara is keen on a move to Brentford, who have held initial talks with Bournemouth. The Cherries value Ouattara, who scored nine goals in all competitions last season, at around £40million. Brentford's struggles to secure a deal for Ouattara, who is viewed as a replacement for Bryan Mbeumo, could have a bearing on the future of Yoane Wissa. Wissa has attracted interest from Newcastle, who are weighing up a £35m bid, and is keen on a move to St James' Park as he wants to play Champions League football. However, Brentford's failure to get a deal over the line for Ouattara would make them less inclined to sanction the departure of Wissa, who they value at £50m. Brentford have faced similar issues in their pursuit of Omari Hutchinson, who they still hold an interest in, with Ipswich also clear they want to sign a replacement before letting the winger leave. The Bees are also keen on Rennes forward Arnaud Kalimuendo, who registered 17 goals and three assists in Ligue 1 last season. Rennes sporting director Loic Desire has confirmed that the club are in negotiations over Kalimuendo's departure, having previously admitted the 23-year-old was likely to leave this summer. Brentford head coach Keith Andrews is keen to bolster his attacking options ahead of the new season with the arrivals of both Ouattara and Kalimuendo, with both deals viewed as separate from each other.
