Channel 9 host spills the beans on Reece Walsh exchange that occurred off camera
Allana Ferguson has lifted the lid on a conversation she had with Reece Walsh off camera that goes to the mindset of the Brisbane Broncos fullback and how frustrated he's been with his performances. Walsh had one of the worst games of his NRL career in Round 2, making four errors and missing four tackles as the Broncos went down to the Raiders.
Brisbane put 50 points on the Roosters in the opening round, but even then Walsh wasn't at his best. There was a telling moment in the first half of that game when Walsh made a break and completely butchered a try by not passing to a teammate.
Instead of drawing fullback James Tedesco and passing to one of a number of teammates in support, the 22-year-old tried to run around his opposite number. He eventually tried to pass after realising his mistake, but Tedesco managed to knock the ball down and prevent the try.
Speaking on the 'Immortal Behaviour' podcast with Andrew Johns on Thursday, Channel 9 star Ferguson revealed she spoke to Walsh about that incident before he went on-air for a post-game interview that night. Ferguson ribbed Walsh about not passing and joked that she was going to mention it during the interview.
But tellingly, the young fullback begged her not to bring it up and was very embarrassed about his mistake. "We were speaking to Reece off-air before he came onto the panel," she revealed. "I gave him a little bit of stick and was like 'I'm going to bring it up'. He was like 'don't bring it up' and was filthy about it.
"It wasn't necessarily because he didn't want to have a laugh. But you could see how frustrated he was despite doing a lot of good things that game. To see how filthy he was after that, I feel like that says a lot."
Johns said he could see how frustrated Walsh was in the loss to the Raiders, and pressure is mounting on the young fullback on a number of fronts. The 22-year-old is desperate to get the Broncos off to a good start in 2025 after they missed the finals last year, and he knows he'll have to lift his game to prevent Kalyn Ponga taking his Queensland No.1 jersey.
Ponga has made a blinding start to the season and would almost be first player picked if Maroons coach Billy Slater was selecting his team right now. "It will come. He just needs to pull it back a little bit and not try to go the big play every time," Johns said about Walsh. "Especially in Origin, you can't chase the big play. You have to let the big play come to you."

A glaring weakness in Walsh's game has always been the mistakes he makes, which usually come about from trying too hard or rushing. His teammates have backed him to respond with a big game against the Cowboys on Friday night.
"Reecey is very hard on himself," winger Jesse Arthars said this week. "He holds himself to a high standard. When we are at training, in meetings and inside the club he is always looking at what he can work on. I am sure he will be pushing to play one of his better games. I fully back him."

Selwyn Cobbo spotted in telling act with Adam Reynolds and family after axing
Selwyn Cobbo had every right to cut a dejected figure after being axed by Broncos coach Michael Maguire for their big win over the Gold Coast Titans in Adam Reynolds' milestone 300th game. After all, the match loomed as the final chance for Cobbo to impress Maroons coach Billy Slater and try to force his way back into Origin calculation for Game 2 in Perth on June 18. Cobbo could easily have gone into his shell and hidden away from the cameras, feeling a sense of injustice at being made a scapegoat for Brisbane's horror run of form in the lead-up to Saturday night's 44-14 victory. But the occasion belonged to Reynolds, who celebrated his special milestone surrounded by family, and Cobbo put on an impressive show of solidarity for his veteran teammate. The 23-year-old was spotted helping the team run through their warm-up drills before the game at Suncorp Stadium. And Cobbo appeared to be in good spirits after reportedly taking his demotion well. Maguire explained the decision to dump Cobbo and promote Josiah Karapani - who vindicated the coach's selection call with an impressive two-try haul. "As a group, and as a leadership group and as a coach, we're pushing standards here and expectations in how we're doing things, and Karapani's got his opportunity and Selly's got to look at a few things in his game," the Broncos coach said before the game. "(Karapani) has been really consistent in the way he's been playing through the pre-season ... and he's obviously experienced first grade. When he has played, he's played really well. I know he'll do a good job." The Broncos coach was spot-on as Karapani took his chance with both hands to further cloud Cobbo's future. The former Origin star is off-contract at the end of this season and the Broncos reportedly haven't tabled Cobbo a formal offer and appear to be prioritising the re-signing of centre Kotoni Staggs. Maguire was quick to stress that Cobbo could "definitely" force his way back into the side but a stint in reserve grade looms as the most likely scenario, at least in the short-term. In place of Cobbo on the wing, Karapani had 15 runs for 176 metres, as well as three tackle breaks and two line breaks in the two-try performance. The 23-year-old had only played 11 games in first grade before Saturday night but looked every bit an NRL player as he doubled his tally of NRL tries. What it means for Cobbo's future in Brisbane remains to be seen though and he could find it hard to break back into the Broncos' first team squad. He was also seen getting around his Broncos teammate's after their morale-boosting win, and posed for the team photo as Reynolds was joined by his family members after the game to mark the magical 300-game milestone. The night couldn't have gone much better for the Broncos - decked out in a striking all-black strip for the club's dedicated mental health round. Fullback Reece Walsh's spectacular return from injury also included a try-scoring double to spark Brisbane's attack. And while milestone man Reynolds was proud to join the NRL's 300-game club, it was the way the team bounced back to form that delighted him the most. "I'm more pleased with the performance," Reynolds said post-match. "I'm glad the week is over. It's been a big week with everything that comes with it. I'm honoured. I have always been about the team, it's something I will reflect on after a few beers." with AAP

Have you watched him? Maroons defend Mam's selection
Billy Slater has defended picking Ezra Mam for State of Origin just three games after his return from a drug-driving ban, adamant the Brisbane star will add to Queensland's squad. Mam is expected to be rolled out as 18th man for next Wednesday's must-win clash at Optus Stadium in Perth, after being named in Slater's 20-man squad. The uncapped Maroon will undergo scans on his knee before entering camp on Monday, after copping a knock in the Broncos' win over Gold Coast on Saturday night. Queensland are confident he will be fit to line up, with Slater describing the injury as a "bump" when he unveiled his squad on Monday morning. QLD ARE LOCKED IN 🚨 Representing the state for #Origin II. — NRL (@NRL) June 8, 2025 It was always going to be contentious, with Slater dropping captain Daly Cherry-Evans and picking Tom Dearden to wear the No.7 jersey. But Mam's selection has added to the headlines. The Brisbane five-eighth copped a nine-match ban for crashing a car while driving unlicensed and with drugs in his system last October. Three occupants of the Uber he collided with were injured, including a woman and her young daughter. Mam was fined $120,000 by the NRL and subsequently attended a rehabilitation facility and worked on a job site before returning to pre-season training in January. Slater said he had not had a chance to sense how remorseful Mam was, having only spoken to the 22-year-old on Sunday night to inform him of his selection. "He's the right person for that position right now," Slater said. "I am sure people will have their speculation around all the people selected. That is OK, everyone is entitled to their opinion. "He has been doing a great job since he returned. We feel the squad will benefit from him being here." Mam has played three NRL games since his return to the playing arena and was booed repeatedly by the Brookvale Oval crowd in the recent 34-6 loss to Manly. But Slater said there was no question over whether the Indigenous star had done enough to prove his worth to the Maroons squad. "Have you watched the couple of games back? He has been pretty good, I don't think he has skipped a beat," Slater said. "By all reports he has been doing a lot of training through the first half of the year while he was sitting out. "He has been in this position before and been part of this squad before. I am sure he will take his opportunity if presented." On one level Mam's inclusion should come as no surprise. After his three-try display in the 2023 grand final he was brought into his first pre-season Maroons camp in February of 2024. Slater then invited him into camp ahead of game one of the 2024 Origin series as a player identified as a potential long-term in Queensland player.

Todd McShay's Comp for Klubnik? A Rising NFL Star
Todd McShay's Comp for Klubnik? A Rising NFL Star originally appeared on Athlon Sports. NFL Draft guru Todd McShay is high on Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik, and he has a compelling NFL comparison that should excite Tigers fans. Advertisement On "The McShay Show," the former ESPN analyst broke down Klubnik's game and saw a striking resemblance to a quarterback who just lit up the AFC West as a rookie: Denver Broncos QB Bo Nix. Rebilas-Imagn Images "I see a lot of Bo Nix in this kid. I see a lot of Bo Nix in Cade Klubnik," McShay stated. "I think he's great when the initial play breaks down, when he's gotta climb the pocket, when he's gotta side step. It's like soothing to him, which I love that." It's a comparison that carries significant weight. Nix, the 12th overall pick in the 2024 draft, is coming off a stellar rookie campaign where he threw for 3,775 yards and 29 touchdowns for the Broncos. He added another 430 yards and four scores with his legs, quickly establishing himself as a franchise player. Advertisement McShay admits he may have initially overlooked some of the traits in Nix that he now sees in Klubnik. "Watch his arm, like how loose, and the ball, it has more energy than it looks," McShay added, describing a shared "elastic" quality in both quarterbacks' arms. "I said the same thing about Bo, and I put too much emphasis on all the problems at Auburn and not enough on the development at Oregon. I absolutely undervalued Bo Nix." Klubnik, now entering his senior season, is building a resume that justifies the hype. In a dominant 2024 junior year, he was one of only two quarterbacks nationwide to pass for over 3,500 yards and rush for over 400. By the Numbers: Klubnik's 2024 Breakout Advertisement Passing: 3,639 yards, 36 TDs, 6 INTs Rushing: 463 yards, 7 TDs Total Touchdowns: 43 (2nd in FBS) His impressive touchdown-to-interception ratio (36-to-6) was among the nation's best, showcasing the decision-making that has scouts buzzing. The buzz is translating directly to his draft stock. In McShay's Way-Too-Early 2026 Mock Draft, he projected Klubnik as a top-five pick, landing with the Cleveland Browns. "When I'm saying Bo Nix [comp to Klubnik], like look at the size, look at the mobility, look at the elastic arm, look at kind of the chaos pressure stuff," McShay clarified. "I'm not saying the ceiling is Bo Nix. I'm just saying when I watch him, I see a lot of the same stuff." Advertisement As Klubnik enters the 2025 season as a bona fide Heisman Trophy candidate, the comparison to a successful pro like Nix will only amplify the spotlight on the Clemson signal-caller.
