Trump deploys National Guard to DC, takes control of city police
'Our capital city has been overtaken by violent gangs and bloodthirsty criminals, roving mobs of wild youth, drugged-out maniacs and homeless people,' Trump said on Monday (Aug 11) at a White House press conference. 'And we're not going to let it happen anymore.'
The National Guard unit is expected to assist with logistics, transportation, and other tasks, with an eye toward freeing up more local police to make arrests. That's similar to Trump's deployment of the National Guard in Los Angeles earlier this year to assist federal immigration officials carrying out raids. The move was made over the wishes of California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, and prompted days of protests.
Trump is able to temporarily seize control of the city's police department under emergency powers granted in a decades-old law that gives the more than 700,000 residents of Washington the political autonomy to elect a mayor and city council members.
The combined effort is designed to target homelessness and violent crime, Trump said.
'You want to be able to leave your apartment or your house where you live and feel safe and go into a store to buy a newspaper or buy something, and you don't have that now,' Trump said at the event, flanked by officials including Attorney General Pam Bondi and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Violent crime has been dropping in the District for two years, according to local police data. As of Jan 3, violent crime in DC in 2024 was at a 30-year low, according to the US Justice Department.
But the moves come after a former Department of Government Efficiency staffer said he was assaulted in a weekend carjacking attempt earlier this month, prompting the president to cast Washington as a crime-ridden city. The White House subsequently announced that law enforcement officers from more than a dozen agencies – including the FBI, DEA, and ATF – would deploy across the city for nearly a week.
The president's efforts to exert greater control in the capital risks inflaming tensions with the city's residents, who overwhelmingly supported Democrat Kamala Harris in the 2024 election and who have borne the economic brunt of Trump's efforts to dramatically reduce the federal workforce.
Trump previously signed an executive order that makes it easier for states and cities to remove outdoor encampments on federal lands and get people into mental health or addiction treatment, a shift in approach from existing policies that have worked to find housing for homeless people first and then seek treatment opportunities for them. He also signed an executive order that created a panel to coordinate efforts to improve safety and address graffiti and vandalism in the city. BLOOMBERG

Trump open to Nvidia selling scaled-back Blackwell chip to China
Nvidia may be allowed to ship its Blackwell chips to China if the company can design it to be less advanced. WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump signalled on Aug 11 that he'd be open to allowing Nvidia Corp to sell a scaled-back version of its most advanced AI chip to China. Mr Trump said he would consider a deal that would allow Nvidia to ship its Blackwell chips to China if the company could design it to be less advanced. 'It's possible I'd make a deal' on a 'somewhat enhanced – in a negative way – Blackwell' processor, he said in a briefing with reporters. 'In other words, take 30 per cent to 50 per cent off of it.' Mr Trump made his remarks on Nvidia's Blackwell chip while confirming that he'd hammered out a separate, unusual deal with Nvidia that will allow the company to sell its less-advanced H20 AI chip to China if it pays 15 per cent of revenue tied to those shipments to the US government. AMD Micro Devices will deliver the same share from MI308 revenues, a person familiar with the situation has said, asking not to be identified discussing internal deliberations. The revenue-sharing agreement for the H20 chip – and the prospect of yet another one for Nvidia's Blackwell product – reflects Mr Trump's consistent effort to engineer a financial payout for America in return for concessions on trade. Such unprecedented arrangements, however, stand to set a precedent for all American companies doing business in the Asian nation and threaten the US government's national security rationale for export controls, experts said. Mr Trump didn't say exactly when he might negotiate a deal with Nvidia Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang on the Blackwell chip but alluded to a possible meeting soon on the prospect: 'I think he's coming to see me again about that, but that will be a unenhanced version of the big one.' Those chips are currently too powerful to be sold into China, according to US restrictions. Nvidia and smaller rival AMD have seen their revenues in China slashed by increasingly tight US government restrictions on AI chip exports. While the Trump administration has begun granting permits for some chips to China, those products are older and only equivalent to domestic Chinese offerings, casting doubt on their attractiveness in that market. A newer, better offering might help promote Nvidia's standing with Chinese customers if it can get sign-off from the administration. When the US tightened restrictions in April, Nvidia said it would work on another chip for the China market and would seek permission to export that one. It cautioned that the older Hopper design, the basis of the H20 chip being sent to China only, could no longer be reduced in capabilities. BLOOMBERG

Trump says Ukraine, Russia will have to swap some land for peace
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said on Monday (Aug 11) that both Ukraine and Russia would need to cede land to each other to end the war, adding that his upcoming talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin would gauge whether a deal was possible. Speaking at a White House press conference, Trump said his meeting with Putin in Alaska on Friday would be a 'feel-out' session to assess the Russian leader's willingness to make peace. 'I'm going in to speak to Vladimir Putin, and I'm going to be telling him, you've got to end this war,' Trump told reporters. 'You've got to end it.' POSSIBLE THREE-WAY MEETING Trump said a future meeting could involve Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and could become a three-way session including himself and Putin. He added that he planned to speak with European leaders shortly after his talks with Putin, with the goal of securing a speedy ceasefire. The US president has floated the idea of land swaps before, but neither Kyiv nor Moscow has expressed willingness to cede territory. European governments have warned that major concessions to Russia could create long-term security risks for the West. WAR ENTERS THIRD YEAR Ukraine has been fighting to repel Russian forces since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, the largest conflict in Europe since World War II. Russia currently occupies about a fifth of Ukrainian territory, while Ukraine holds little Russian land. Trump said, 'there'll be some land swapping going on' and that Russia controlled 'very prime territory'. 'We're going to try to get some of that territory back,' he added, without offering specifics.

Trump says Ukraine, Russia will have to swap some land for peace
U.S. President Donald Trump speaks to the press about deploying federal law enforcement agents in Washington to bolster the local police presence, in the Press Briefing Room at the White House, in Washington D.C., U.S., August 11, 2025. REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst WASHINGTON - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that both Ukraine and Russia would have to cede land to each other to end the war and that his talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin would be aimed at taking the temperature on a possible deal. Trump told a White House press conference that his talks on Friday with Putin in Alaska would be a "feel-out meeting" to determine whether Putin was willing to make a deal. He said he could know within two minutes whether progress was possible. "So I'm going in to speak to Vladimir Putin, and I'm going to be telling him, you've got to end this war. You've got to end it," Trump told reporters. Trump also said a future meeting could include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and could end up being a three-way session including himself and Putin. He said he would speak to European leaders soon after his talks with Putin and that his goal was a speedy ceasefire in the bloody conflict. Trump has in the past talked about land swaps but neither Russia nor Ukraine have been interested in ceding land to each other as part of a peace deal. Europeans worry that major concessions to Russia could create security problems for the West in the future. Ukraine has sought to push back Russian invaders ever since the largest and deadliest war in Europe since World War Two began in February 2022. Russia justifies the war on the grounds of what it calls threats to its security from a Ukrainian pivot towards the West. Kyiv and its Western allies say the invasion is an imperial-style land grab. Russia currently occupies about a fifth of Ukrainian territory, while Ukraine holds barely any Russian territory. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed.
