Kansas City Royals star shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. was forced out of Wednesday's spring training game against the Seattle Mariners after being hit by a pitch on the forearm in the fifth inning.
Last season, the Royals made the playoffs for the first time since winning the World Series in 2015. They even won their first round playoff series against the Baltimore Orioles. Expectations for the team are high heading into 2025, with some even believing an AL Central title could be on the table.
Much of the Royals' success in 2024 came from Witt. He led the team in basically every category you can think of en route to a second-place finish in American League MVP voting.

Bobby Witt Jr. injury update
While trailing 5-1 with two outs and no one on in the top of the fifth inning, Witt was hit in the forearm by a 95.9 mph sinker from Seattle's Andrés Muñoz.
Witt was promptly replaced on the basepaths by Tyler Tolbert, who would end up scoring after stealing second base and coming home on a Vinnie Pasquantino double.
The Royals said Witt would "undergo further evaluation." Later Wednesday, they said Witt "has a left forearm contusion. X-rays are negative for a fracture. He will be reevaluated in the morning."

Heading into Wednesday's action, Witt had played in 10 spring training games, posting a .296 batting average and .996 OPS, with two home runs and four RBI.
Witt was one of the best players in baseball during the 2024 regular season, posting career highs in batting average (.332 - led AL), OPS (.977), home runs (32), RBI (109), hits (211), doubles (45) and runs (125). Witt was honored with his first All-Star selection, as well as his first Gold Glove and Silver Slugger Awards.
How long will Bobby Witt Jr. be out?
It is unclear at this point. The Royals said Witt would be reevaluated Thursday morning.
Opening day for the Royals is scheduled for Thursday, March 27 at 3:10 p.m. local time, a home game against the Cleveland Guardians.

The former Notre Dame standout was particularly incredible in the third quarter, during which she scored 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting — preventing Atlanta from pulling away. It's certainly an interesting turn for Marina Mabrey, who recently played one of the worst games in WNBA history. Their other victory was an 85-83 win over the Indiana Fever where Mabrey dropped 26 points. Mabrey was previously part of the Chicago Sky from 2023 to 2024. She played alongside All-Star forward Angel Reese last campaign, but she didn't finish the season with the Windy City franchise after requesting a trade. Chicago sent Mabrey to the Sun, getting Rachel Banham and Moriah Jefferson in return, per ESPN. The Sky also received a 2025 second-round pick and the rights to swap first-round picks with Connecticut in 2026. Chisholm added an RBI single in the second and Buehler hit Volpe to force in a run in the second before Red Sox manager Alex Cora mercifully ended his starter's outing after 67 pitches. 'It's tough,' Buehler said, per 'It's obviously a big game and a big rivalry that I was excited to be a part of. And for it to go the way that it did is super disappointing, especially after the past two, three weeks of kind of prep and throwing and all that kinda (expletive) and how I'm feeling. Physically I feel great and for it to happen that way, it sucks.' Buehler told reporters he still feels he's getting closer to his normal self, even believing he threw plenty of good pitches Friday night. JJ Redick saw Tyrese Haliburton's potential three years ago Tyrese Haliburton of the Indiana Pacers has been a rising star for some time now, but over the last several weeks, he has become perhaps as dangerous a player as there is in the NBA. During the regular season, there were quite a few people who thought he was overrated, and he wasn't even named to this year's All-Star team. But he has exploded during the playoffs and hit a number of clutch and game-winning shots, including the dagger he nailed just before time expired in Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Thursday. Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick may have seen at least some of this coming. In February 2022, when the Sacramento Kings traded Haliburton to the Indiana Pacers along with Buddy Hield and Tristan Thompson for Domantas Sabonis, Justin Holiday and Jeremy Lamb, Redick said point-blank that Haliburton was the best player on the Kings. "This is some form of malpractice on the Kings' part," Redick said of the trade. "... Tyrese Haliburton has been the best player on that team. ... He was determined to turn things around and be part of that rebuild in Sacramento. I know he's shocked right now, but they traded away their best player." The Kings took Haliburton with the No. 12 pick in the 2020 draft, and at the time, he was starting in their backcourt alongside De'Aaron Fox. Fox was putting up much better scoring numbers, and to this day, he has continued to average more points than Haliburton, but Haliburton has been the better 3-point shooter, passer and facilitator. Haliburton led the NBA in assists per game last season, and he now has Indiana just three wins away from an NBA championship. Meanwhile, Sacramento made the playoffs in 2023 as the third seed in the Western Conference but has failed to reach the playoffs in both of the last two seasons.
