SAF has to come up with new ways to overcome challenges: Chan Chun Sing, Singapore News
Chan was speaking to reporters at Nee Soon Camp, the final stop in his morning visit of high readiness units across all four SAF services — his first since being sworn into his new appointment on May 23.
"We are in a changed world. There are new challenges, disruptions because of technology, and new forces that we have to content with," said Chan.
"But it is also why we have come up new ways to overcome our challenges."
During his visit to Nee Soon Camp, Chan observed troopers from the Army Deployment Force (ADF) conduct their routine training to sharpen their response to peacetime contingencies, such as terrorism threats and disaster relief.
The all-regular unit were put through the paces, accounting for strength and equipment, before they were deployed in peacekeeper protected response vehicles.
Chan said that he is heartened that the SAF is not resting on its laurels, and is "constantly re-examining the way it does its operations".
"It's not just about planning for today's situation that's important for the SAF. It's also about planning forward," he added.
Earlier in the morning, Chan, together with Senior Minister of State for Defence Zaqy Mohamad and Minister of State for Defence Desmond Choo, observed how AH-64D Apache helicopter pilots and air crew from the Republic of Singapore Air Force scrambled to respond to a simulated air threat.
It is part of Exercise Rover, run by RSAD's Air Power Generation Command from May 22 to 31.
A part of Sembawang Country Club's golf course was converted into a temporary helicopter deployment area — capable of supporting missions such as air defence and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.
Mindef said that as part of the exercise, AH-64D, H225M and CH-47 helicopters were activated to respond to various scenarios.
The minister also visited the Republic of Singapore Navy's training, where the Maritime Security Task Force simulated how they neutralised a terrorist attack against Singapore from the sea.
As for the Digital and Intelligence Service (DIS), he was briefed on its intelligence support for counter-terrorism operations. He also interacted with the DIS personnel who conduct 24/7 intelligence monitoring.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Chan acknowledged that the armed forces capabilities can take years to go from being conceptualised to operational.
"Many of the things that I saw this morning, some of them were capabilities that we were talking about many years ago," he said.
"And today it's a joy to see them being operational."
Chan, a former Education Minister, was moved to helm the defence ministry in Prime Minister Lawrence Wong's new Cabinet on May 21.
A former army chief before entering politics in 2011, Chan was also Senior Minister of State for Defence and Second Minister for Defence.

This means that more Singaporeans will be able to watch the parade, as the 55,000-seat stadium has a larger capacity than the Padang, which can accommodate 27,000 spectators. The NDP was last held at the new National Stadium in 2016 - the only time it was held there. During the appreciation function, Mr Chan gave out awards to 148 principal partners and 33 gold award recipients for their contributions to NDP 2025. In his speech, Mr Chan, who is also the Coordinating Minister for Public Services, thanked the many volunteers and participants who put NDP 2025 together. SAF commences airdrop operations in Gaza, thanks Jordan for invitation, Singapore News
The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) has commenced airdrop operations to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. In an updated Facebook post on Saturday (Aug 16), the Ministry of Defence said that the operation commenced on Friday (Aug 15) and was conducted in close coordination with the Royal Jordanian Air Force and other participating air forces. This follows the deployment of a C-130 transport aircraft and personnel from the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) and Singapore Army to deliver Singapore's ninth tranche of humanitarian aid for Gaza on Aug 12. The aid comprises medical supplies from the Ministry of Health, and food supplies from various non-governmental organisations (NGOs). The NGOs include Humanity Matters, Caritas Humanitarian Aid and Relief Initiative Singapore, Mercy Relief, and the Rahmatan Lil Alamin Foundation. These were coordinated through the Changi Regional Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Coordination Centre. Senior Minister of State for Defence Zaqy Mohamad who is in Jordan for a working visit from Aug 17 to 18 met with Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for Jordan Armed Forces Major-General (MG) Yousef Huneiti on Sunday (Aug 17). SMS Zaqy thanked MG Huneiti for the Jordanian government's invitation for the RSAF to participate in the airdrop operations. They also discussed potential avenues for further collaboration between the armed forces to alleviate the situation in Gaza. 'Flying coffins': Malaysia's king rejects plan to procure old Black Hawk helicopters, Malaysia News
Malaysia's King Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar has ordered the government to abandon plans to procure Black Hawk helicopters that are over three decades old, referring to them as "flying coffins". The monarch, who is Supreme Commander of the Malaysian Armed Forces, was speaking at a parade marking the 60th anniversary of Malaysia's Special Service Regiment in Mersing on Saturday (Aug 16). "Are we going to put our pilots in flying coffins? Think for yourselves," Sultan Ibrahim said, in remarks later published on his official Facebook page. "I believe that all of this happens because the defence ministry is full of agents or former generals who have become salesmen. We even have textile firms wanting to sell us drones." He urged officials not to repeat costly mistakes of the past, citing the country's purchase of SkyHawk jets in the 1980s. According to media reports, Malaysia bought 88 Vietnam War-era aircraft from the United States, of which only 40 were eventually used before being retired due to high accident rates. The king said that inflated prices caused by middlemen could impact the current allocated military budget. "So don't try to fool me. If you don't want to listen to me, I won't reprimand you anymore after this," he added. His comments come after Malaysia reportedly signed a RM187 million (S$57 million) deal in May 2023 to lease four Black Hawk helicopters from a local firm but the contract was reportedly scrapped last November after repeated delivery delays. On Saturday, Sultan Ibrahim stressed that military purchases must be assessed transparently and not based on the recommendations of agents or individuals with vested interests. "Don't waste time purchasing nonsense that does not fit the military's needs. If you don't know what the actual (market) price is, ask me first," he said. The king recalled questioning the purchase of rigid raiding craft for commandos at RM5 million five years ago, when a better boat could have been acquired for under RM2 million. He added that a recent proposal to buy a larger version of the same craft for nearly RM10 million "makes no sense" and should be thoroughly reviewed. In response, Defence Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin assured that the ministry will align asset modernisation with the needs of the armed forces. "Honouring the decree of His Majesty, the Defence Ministry will continue to place emphasis on the readiness of the armed forces," he said, as quoted by New Straits Times. [[nid:721324]]
