AFAM warns against attempts to circumvent US tariffs

THE Airfreight Forwarders Association of Malaysia (AFAM) 'strongly condemns' alleged attempts by China-based brokers rerouting shipments through Malaysia and promoting such services aggressively on social media platforms.
In a statement released today, AFAM said it noted with concern recent media reports alleging that goods originating from China were being imported into Malaysia, relabeled as Malaysian products, and subsequently exported to the US to circumvent US-imposed tariffs.
It noted reports that the practice was being facilitated by China-based brokers, though the statement did not name any parties that may have been involved.
'These actions, if true, are highly unethical and risk seriously undermining Malaysia's international trade reputation. They may also jeopardise Malaysia's standing as a trusted and responsible trade partner in the global supply chain.
'AFAM strongly condemns such practices. We have taken immediate action by writing to the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) to urge a firm response,' it said.
In its communication, AFAM said it has recommended that all chambers of commerce and agencies involved in issuing certificates of origin exercise the highest level of scrutiny and due diligence.
AFAM has also issued an advisory to all its members, importers and exporters to warn against participation in any activity that may be construed as misrepresentation of origin or an attempt to evade international trade tariffs, which may be deemed illegal.
'AFAM fully supports the Government of Malaysia in managing the US tariff issue through consultative and diplomatic channels with the US Government. We reiterate our commitment to upholding the integrity of Malaysia's trade practices and maintaining our country's respected position in global commerce,' it said. –TMR

Bank Negara to fully implement more flexible funds repatriation, conversion programme on July 1

KUALA LUMPUR: Bank Negara Malaysia is set to fully implement its Qualified Resident Investor (QRI) programme for eligible corporates effective July 1. The programme offers flexibility for Malaysian companies that repatriate and convert foreign currency funds from overseas investments and may have interest to undertake new or further direct investment abroad in the future. To enjoy the flexibility, the companies must first bring home any foreign earnings from their overseas investments and convert that money into ringgit upon successful one-off registration with Bank Negara. These companies can then invest more money abroad later without needing to ask the central bank for approval each time. "Eligible corporates include all resident corporates that repatriate and convert foreign currency proceeds from overseas investments and demonstrate good corporate governance and compliance with the foreign exchange policy of Bank Negara," it said in a statement. The programme will be available until June 30, 2028. The full rollout follows the success of the pilot programme, which was introduced in April 2024.

China extends 10-day visa-free transit policy to Indonesia

BEIJING: China granted Indonesian citizens a visa-free transit stay of up to 10 days on Thursday (June 12), expanding the countries that enjoy the policy to 55. China's visa-free transit policy applies to 60 ports in the country. Citizens from the 55 countries holding valid international travel documents and interline tickets with confirmed dates and seats to a third country or region can enter China visa-free at any of the 60 ports, and stay in designated areas for as long as 10 days. These travellers are allowed to engage in tourism, business, exchange visits or family visits. Expanding the policy to Indonesia will help boost the good momentum of China-Indonesia cooperation, and make bilateral trade and investment more convenient, an official with the National Immigration Administration said. - China Daily/ANN

Malaysia seeks tariff relief below 10% for key sectors in upcoming US talks

Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is seeking lower tariff rates for selected sectors under the United States' (US) 10 per cent minimum tariff, particularly for industries deemed critical to both economies, ahead of another round of negotiations in Washington on June 18. Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz said the talks aim to secure fairer terms for Malaysian exporters affected by the new baseline tariff announced by the US administration. "The US currently imposes a 24 per cent tariff on certain Malaysian exports. And of course, our first target is to reduce that rate. The second is to identify sectors that should ideally be subject to tariffs below 10 per cent. "We need to consider sectors that are important to Malaysian exporters and also crucial to the US economy,' he told a press conference after launching the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) Strategic Plan 2026-2030, here today. However, the specific sectors under negotiation were not disclosed. In April 2025, the US government announced new tariff measures affecting more than 60 countries, including Malaysia. The implementation of these tariffs has been temporarily paused for 90 days to allow room for negotiations. - Bernama
