Radio host moved to tears after colleague opens up on air in emotional interview

Yahoo25-05-2025

A radio presenter was moved to tears after one of her colleagues opened up on air about the challenges he has overcome.
Bury-based singer, songwriter and broadcaster Jsky delivered the emotional interview on BBC Radio Manchester's Manc and Proud show. The conversation with his colleague Simone Riley made the host tearful while listeners at home said they were also moved.
During the interview, Jsky talked about his journey as an artist, his love for Manchester and the challenges he has overcome.

Overwhelmed by emotion, Riley said she 'had a bit of a cry' listening to her colleague, telling him, 'you've truly touched my heart'.
"I'm getting emotional listening to you," she said, "and before I had a bit of a cry when I was speaking to you because I know you as a colleague but we've never had a deep chat like this.
"I just see someone who is flamboyant, someone who's very confident and I've never really delved into this like we have done today... and Jay I've got to say, thank you so much from the bottom of my heart for being so open and honest with me here today.
"It really is heartwarming to hear your story and to know your purpose."
Jsky, whose real name is Jason Warner, grew up in Whitefield where his family were 'the only black people' and subject to racist abuse.
But the singer, who regularly performed at Pride events, said he did not felt welcome in Manchester's gay scene for a long time either.
He said: "I'd go to clubs in Manchester in the village and I wouldn't be able to get in. They'd say, "you need to be a member", and then the people that weren't the same skin tone as me, shall we say, would be able to walk in and I'd be left on the outside.
"When I first started going out on the Manchester scene, I made a name for myself with the z-list clubs on the straight scene because they were the places that actually accepted me the most. I built up my following that way."
Speaking about his upbringing, he added: 'From an early age I got to experience being different in a room and being treated differently. So I've had this responsibility instilled in me, to represent something bigger than yourself, that's kind of primed me."
During the interview, Riley described Jsky as a 'role model'. Asked about his fashion choices, Jsky said: "I want to have fun.
"My message has always been to not be scared of doing something that will make you happy. It's not that deep.
"You don't need to live your life based on what someone might say. And chances are, that negative opinion is just your own in the back of your head.
"So you need to make that other opinion, the good one, louder. And if wearing something makes you feel a certain way and clothes do, they have that power.
"They change how we walk, they change how we hold ourselves, our posture, how we introduce ourselves into the world.
"I want to look back on my life and. Yeah, I might make a few fashion mistakes. I might make a lot to be fair.
"But I want to look back at this pictures and say 'I remember wearing that outfit, I remember the day'.
"It's a statement. It does something. That's my aim."
Listeners quickly took to social media to express their support and admiration for the Manchester fashionista after the interview.
Rapper Sebastenelli who features on Jsky's latest single Put It Pon Dem wrote: "Listened LN, very proud. Very proud. Nothing but love."
Adding to the outpouring of support, Philip Brennan replied: 'Superb interview. Was genuinely quite emotional listening to your story."
Bluescarrmusic also commented: "You are an absolute inspiration...a fellow Manc rooting for you."
Jsky's mum, who tuned in while working at a local charity shop, said: "Heard the interview… you make me so so proud. Have to confess I did shed a tear—you're such a beautiful young man and privileged to be your mam Shap bizzie bizzie...catch up later. Love youuu xx."

What it's really like working with David Attenborough behind the camera

Sir David Attenborough is a national treasure with a remarkable career that spans eight decades; and he's still working at 99-years-old. Attenborough even worked on his 98th birthday to film BBC show Asia last year. Now Yahoo UK speaks to those who worked closely with the natural historian on his latest film — Ocean With David Attenborough — that reveals the ocean is vital for our survival and shows "shocking" never-before-seen footage of bottom trawling. The nature documentary movie will air on National Geographic and be available to stream on Disney+ on Sunday, 8 June. Director Keith Scholey shares insight into what it's really like to work with Attenborough after working together for more than four decades. He tells Yahoo UK: "It's always incredible [to work with David Attenborough]. I've worked with him for 44 years so it's not a new experience but every time, it's a different experience. "I learned so much, always through my whole life I keep on learning from this amazing man, and this has been a really special film because together we've all been on this mission to try and tell the world about the power of ocean protection and it's such an uplifting story... And wow! It's just amazing seeing David, a 98-year-old man, giving performances like he did for our film. It's extraordinary." Working with Attenborough for four decades, Keith reveals the new thing he learned from him while working on film Ocean together. He adds: "Well, I think the thing with David is that so much has happened to him in all his life. That when you, when we sit around and tell stories, he always comes up with a new story about something he did. Which you thought, 'wow, you were there'. "You saw that happen, you were part and parcel of that moment in history, and which I thought I had no idea [about], and it's that depth of his experience. He's probably known every prime minister this country's had since Winston Churchill and just that alone [is impressive]. "Another prime minister comes along, they will want to meet him! And it's just, 'I've met a lot of those.' But he has a sort of an amazing insight over so many things way beyond natural history." Also in conversation with Yahoo UK, director Colin Butfield hails Attenborough as a "living legend" and "absolutely brilliant" to work with. "It's all you could have ever hoped for and more," he says. "He's the living legend and I'm sure you did, but I grew up watching David Attenborough from an extremely early age. "And to be working on this with him, directing, producing this really authored personal piece that he says is the greatest message he's ever told is just the biggest privilege ever." Check out Ocean With David Attenborough in pictures below Ocean With David Attenborough released 8th May 2025 Executive Producer, Scientific Advisor and National Geographic Explorer, Enric Sala praises Attenborough as the voice everyone trusts. He explains: "For me, the biggest satisfaction is to see him tell that story in the film, right, to have all that scientific information, all that evidence, told in the voice for nature, the voice of authority, that's such a gift." In the movie, the 99-year-old reflects on his own mortality as he has lived on the planet for nearly 100 years. Butfield explains why this is an important part of the film and absolutely crucial to include. "He [David Attenborough] is the most trusted voice and storyteller in the world so when he says something everyone listens," director Butfield says. "So that's a heck of an attribute to a film. And as you say, this is his journey, [his] discovery as much as anyone else's. This film is a love letter to the world to save the ocean. After nearly 100 years on Earth, he reaches this epic conclusion and that's just amazing. "The film is the end of this big journey of discovery for him. It's a journey of discovery of the ocean and hopefully the beginning of a journey of discovery for all of us. It certainly was for me, it's the beginning of a completely new journey for me. It's changed my life forever, what I found out by making this film." Ocean with David Attenborough ends with the powerful message that there is hope and Attenborough predicts that the ocean "may not just recover but thrive beyond anything anyone alive has ever seen". Ocean with David Attenborough airs Sunday 8 June at 8pm on National Geographic and streams the same day on Disney+.

London's newest and most exclusive hotel penthouses start at $50,000 a night

In travel news this week, the most elite penthouse stays in London's legendary Mayfair, phenomenal natural landscapes from Turkey to Utah, plus the brothers who want to help find you a one-euro home in Sicily. Struggling to find a four-bed suite in London's most upscale and centrally located neighborhood, but with panoramic 180-degree vistas over half the district? The five-star Mandarin Oriental Mayfair hotel, which opened one year ago in storied Hanover Square, has just the ticket. Its newly launched penthouse, on the 11th floor of Mayfair's first new-build hotel in a decade, luxuriates over 5,000 square feet of lofty prime real estate. If the handpainted wallpaper, marble bathtub, array of post-Impressionist art and serenely chic design by Studio Indigo don't entice, perhaps the two levels of view-blessed wraparound terrace might. The cost? Ah well, there's the rub. The starting rate is £40,000 a night (or $54,210), which could get you nearly 15 months at the budget Travelodge hotel in nearby Marylebone, for example. The new offering is at the very top tier of London's accommodation options for super-rich jetsetters with expansive wallets, with the seven-bed Royal Suite at the Lanesborough and the six-room Manor House Wing at the Rosewood being among the ritziest of the glitziest. Prev Next The crown, however, has to go to the £60,000-a-night Penthouse at Claridge's ($81,490), which opened on the rooftop of the 169-year-old Mayfair hotel in November 2023. The 11,840-square-foot suite has four bedrooms, a private garden and swimming pool, 360-degree views over the London skyline, a Steinway piano and the world's largest private collection of works by artist Damien Hirst. Frankly, with all that on offer, I don't know how the global 1% find time on their trip to pick up Tower Bridge fridge magnets or make it down to M&M's World in Leicester Square. To coincide with CNN Original series 'My Happy Place,' CNN's anchors and reporters have been taking us to visit their favorite destinations. Bill Weir's 'happy place' is Utah's Buckskin Gulch, home to one of the longest slot canyons anywhere in the world. The beautiful undulating canyons have been sculpted by water and time and offer a peacefulness rarely found elsewhere – but watch out for the rattlesnakes and scorpions. In southwest Turkey, Lake Salda boasts white-sand beaches and vivid turquoise waters. There's a little more to this body of water than meets the eye, however. Scientists say it's the only place on Earth that's analogous to the Jezero Crater on Mars. How'd this happen? To answer that, we need to go right to the bottom of the ocean and through to the interior of the Earth. There are 24 more of the world's most unusual landscapes to explore in our roundup of must-see phenomena, from colorful sinkholes to waterfalls of molten lava to towering snow 'monsters.' Nearly 10 years after his father died, travel writer Will McGough wanted to honor his memory by scattering his ashes in the pristine wilderness of Antarctica. He made the journey to the White Continent, his father's remains in a bag in his pocket, but the wished-for ceremony did not go ahead as planned. The Mount Kinabalu earthquake of 2015 claimed 18 lives, including Singaporean students and teachers who had traveled to Borneo on a school expedition. A decade later, survivors returned to the mountain to climb again. One told CNN, 'We honored what our friends never got the chance to finish.' Aircraft mechanic Max Comer has built a huge social media following with his fun, quirky and informative 'Airplane Facts with Max' videos. His life as an online star only began in 2022, however, after the unexpected death of his wife turned his world upside down. 'During that time, I had a hard time wanting to just keep going day to day. It gave me something to look forward to — a creative outlet I really needed,' he tells CNN. A family of raccoons recently broke into an Airbus factory in Canada. The momma and five babies reportedly left a trail of urine and chewed wires. There are plenty of one-euro homes hidden all over Sicily. These brothers want to find them for you. American skies may soon open up to supersonic travel. But there's still a big problem.
