17-year-old remanded over murder of mother, brother
MELAKA: A 17-year-old boy, suspected of fatally stabbing his mother and brother in an incident at Taman Rambai Mutiara, Bukit Rambai, yesterday, has been remanded for seven days, starting today until June 19.
The remand order was issued by Magistrate N. Sivasangari to allow further investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
Yesterday, the media reported that a 51-year-old female teacher and her 21-year-old eldest son were found dead, while her youngest son, 13, sustained serious injuries, believed to have resulted from stab wounds, in an incident at their home.
The incident is believed to have occurred around 5 am, with the single mother and her son found lying in a pool of blood in the living room.
Police arrested the suspect outside the house, where he was found sitting in a daze. A 20-centimetre folding knife, believed to be the weapon used in the attack, was discovered with blood stains in a school bag placed outside the residence.

Police receive 3 reports over alleged confinement of haj pilgrims
KUALA LUMPUR: Police have received three reports in connection with a fraudulent haj package involving a group of senior citizens who were allegedly confined and forced to traverse dangerous routes in Saudi Arabia. Federal police Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) acting director Datuk Seri Muhammed Hasbullah Ali said the reports were lodged by family members of the pilgrims who are still in Malaysia. He said two of the reports were made in Mantin, Negri Sembilan and one in Ayer Hitam, Johor. "The CCID is taking this matter seriously and the investigation covers various elements. At this point, it is still too early to confirm the presence of cross-border fraud. "Statements and evidence are being collected to determine whether a syndicate was working with specific agents," he said in a statement. Hasbullah added that police are still awaiting the return of the victims before recording their statements and taking further action. "In response to the three police reports, the CCID has opened an investigation paper under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, to facilitate evidence gathering and further investigation. "The probe is still at an early stage to identify any individuals or local agencies acting as facilitators or intermediaries in offering haj packages," he said. He added that the CCID will work with the Companies Commission of Malaysia, Lembaga Tabung Haji and the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry to blacklist companies offering unapproved packages. "This step is vital to protect the public from becoming victims of fraud," he said. He also advised the public to always verify offers with authorised agencies before accepting any haj-related promotions. "The CCID appreciates media cooperation in disseminating information to the public that only individuals with a haj visa are permitted by Saudi authorities to perform the pilgrimage. "We are committed to taking firm action against any party found to have deceived pilgrims," he said. It was reported that the journey of 47 senior citizens intending to perform the haj turned into a nightmare after being deceived by a local agent, allegedly involving a well-known religious figure. The pilgrims, misled by promises made to them, claimed they were forced to walk across dangerous routes without documentation to reach Makkah after arriving in Jeddah, due to the strict control by Saudi authorities over pilgrims without haj visas.

Sales manager loses almost RM400,000 to online investment scam
SEREMBAN: A factory sales manager in Nilai lost RM389,000 to an online investment scam advertised on Facebook recently. Nilai district police chief Superintendent Abdul Malik Hasim said the man, in his late 40s, claimed he had engaged with an individual promoting the investment scheme on April 19, and was instructed to download an application on his mobile phone. "He subsequently transferred money into six bank accounts provided by the individual through nine transactions, amounting to RM389,000, for investment purposes. "However, he realised he had been scammed when he could no longer access the app or withdraw his supposed profits," Abdul Malik said in a statement. The victim lodged a police report at 2.50pm yesterday after discovering the deception. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

Melaka police share image to raise awareness of night shift dangers
MELAKA: Melaka police have shared an image of a 20-year-old convenience store employee lying dazed and bloodied after being bludgeoned with a baseball bat during a robbery. The picture aims to raise public awareness about the growing dangers faced by graveyard shift workers at 24-hour outlets. The male victim from Taman Bunga Raya in Bukit Beruang was working the late-night shift at a 24-hour store in Taman Sin Hoe, Bukit Baru, when the lone assailant struck at around 4.40am on Saturday (June 14). Melaka Tengah police chief Asst Comm Christopher Patit said the suspect, believed to be a delivery rider, entered the premises wearing a helmet and face mask. 'The suspect approached the counter under the pretext of requesting an RM50 e-wallet top-up before suddenly grabbing cash from the drawer,' he said late Saturday night. ACP Christopher Patit said the employee resisted when the suspect seized RM300, prompting the attacker to strike him on the head with a baseball bat. 'The victim was rushed to Hospital Melaka with head injuries, and his condition is currently reported as stable,' he added. The incident came to light after the store's supervisor, identified only as "Mr Tong," found the employee in such a condition and alerted authorities. The same suspect is believed to be responsible for a second attempted robbery later the same day at another 24-hour outlet in Taman Saujana Puri in Bukit Katil. "In that incident, the suspect used a similar modus operandi by pretending to request an e-wallet top-up. 'When the 31-year-old male cashier attempted to return the change, the suspect reached into the cash drawer and, when the employee tried to intervene, struck him on the wrist with a camera tripod," he said. The suspect fled on a motorcycle, and the cashier sustained minor injuries. Both cases are being investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code for causing hurt in the course of committing robbery. 'We have obtained the suspect's fingerprint from one of the locations and are confident of arresting him soon,' he added. This is not the first time 24-hour retail outlets in Melaka have been targeted. In August 2023, Melaka police arrested a 32-year-old man in connection with a spree of 20 break-ins involving petrol station convenience stores across Johor, Negeri Sembilan, and Melaka. The suspect used tools to smash glass doors and steal cash and goods worth thousands of ringgit. In July 2021, a 48-year-old woman was detained following a series of smash-and-grab burglaries at petrol station convenience stores in the Melaka Tengah district.
