Ted Walsh hails retiring hero Any Second Now: 'He's off to The Savoy or The Ritz for horses'
TED WALSH HAS described training Any Second Now as 'a privilege' after the chasing stalwart scene brought the curtain down on his career at Fairyhouse on Monday.
Owned by JP McManus, the 13-year-old was bidding to become the first teenager since Overshadow in 1953 to win the Irish Grand National, finishing runner-up for the second successive year, this time behind Rebecca Curtis' Haiti Couleurs – a typically brave effort which would ultimately be his final outing.
'He was a great horse to have and a privilege to have him,' said Walsh.
'We've had him since he was a four-year-old, he's been here for nine seasons and we've had some great days with him.

'He was just a pleasure to be involved with and I get very attached to them. He was here for a long time and I appreciate everything he has done for me. He has always run his heart out and he was good at Fairyhouse on Monday, as he was 12 months ago – he just met a better horse on the day.'
A winner of the Kim Muir at the Cheltenham Festival in 2019, he also ran in the Grand National at Aintree three years running, finishing second in 2021 and again making the podium when third a year later.
'We went to Liverpool for the Grand National on three occasions, twice to Cheltenham, ran in three Irish Nationals and we got a Cheltenham Festival win out of him,' added Walsh.
'When he won the Moscow Flyer over hurdles, with the size of him and the scope he had, you knew he would make a nice chaser and he did that and he became a very good horse and a very sound horse. We had some terrific days.

'The only time I think he was unlucky was in his first Grand National which Rachael (Blackmore) won on Henry de Bromhead's horse (Minella Times). He got very badly baulked and lost a lot of ground and that's probably the only day when you could think if the ball had bounced right he might have won.'
Any Second Now will now join fellow McManus-owned luminaries at the owner's Martinstown Stud in retirement, with Walsh delighted he will head off to what he termed a 'five-star hotel' for horses.
'I just always liked everything about Any Second Now and he had a very good owner in JP, you could do whatever you liked with him,' continued Walsh.
'He would have had a very good home here, but he is going to a five-star hotel at Martinstown.
'I wouldn't mind going down there myself in retirement and JP has a beautiful set up and he's off to The Savoy or The Ritz for horses.'
Walsh also reserved praise for Mark Walsh, who partnered Any Second Now for the majority of his 41-race career.

Lauren Walsh fell four shots off the pace after a difficult third round at the Tenerife Women's Open. The Kildare golfer held a two-stroke overnight lead after rounds of 67 and 68 over the opening two days in Spain, briefly holding a four shot advantage at one stage on Friday. But Walsh endured a tough afternoon on Saturday, beginning with a dropped stroke on the first and then a sequence of bogeys around the turn at 8, 10 and 11. A double-bogey on the 14th saw her fall to three-under and flirting with the 80 mark before she salvaged something with a birdie on the penultimate hole to clamber back into the top 10. Walsh will enter the final round four strokes adrift on four-under, with Czech Republic's Sara Kouskova holding a one shot lead on eight-under after a fine round of 69. She is one clear of a trio of golfers on seven-under, comprised of Spain's Ana Pelaez Trivino, Finland's Noora Komulainen and Singapore's Shannon Tan.

Lauren Walsh takes clubhouse lead in Tenerife
Lauren Walsh has surged into the clubhouse lead at the halfway point of the Tenerife Women's Open at Abama Golf. After an opening round of 67 to share the first-round lead, Walsh fired in a neat 68 to sit three shots clear at the top with nearest challenger Sofie Kibsgaard Nielsen still left with her final nine holes to play. Walsh, chasing her maiden success on the Ladies European Tour, started with a bogey on the first but a run of six birdies in 10 holes saw her temporarily move to 10-under par. Back-to-back bogeys at the 13th and 14th suggested a stumble, but a fine approach at the par-five 17th allowed her to get back to nine-under with a missed birdie putt at the last preventing her from matching Thursday's score. Danish golfer Nielsen, also chasing her first LET win after three triumphs on the Access Tour, birdied her first hole but a bogey at her ninth – the 18th – saw her fall back to six-under par. It was a nightmare day, however, for some of the other Irish golfers in the field, none more so than Anna Foster whose promising opening 71 was followed by a disastrous 82 to leave her on nine-over par, well outside the projected cut-line of three-over. Starting on the 10th, Foster had a triple-bogey and a double-bogey on her card in the first four holes with her scorecard dotted with five further bogeys. After starting with a 75, Canice Screene knew that a good round was required to make the weekend but she ended up one 12-over after an 81 that also included a triple-bogey. Annabel Wilson is also set to miss the cut after carding a 75 to leave her on eight-over par. Sara Byrne, however, shot an excellent 71 to give her an outside chance of making it through to Saturday. She sits on four-over par, just a stroke outside the cut-line at present with a bogey on her penultimate hole – the eighth – possibly proving decisive.

Lauren Walsh shares top spot at Tenerife Women's Open
Kildare's Lauren Walsh sizzled to an opening round of 67 at the Tenerife Women's Open to share the lead at Abama Golf with Denmark's early pacesetter Sofie Kibsgaard Nielsen on five under par. The Dane held the outright advantage for most of the day, but Walsh's late bogey-free charge ensured the two-time Curtis Cup star of a place alongside her at the top of the leaderboard. Walsh birdied three of her first five holes, with further birdies arriving on 10 and 18 on a day when the 24-year-old demonstrated impressive prowess with her putter. "We were last out so it's been a long day, but I played nicely," Walsh said after her round. "I hit it pretty consistently and holed a lot of putts. "There's a couple quirky holes so you have to plod your way around and play smart golf. "It's definitely tricky, but thankfully my coach has been out here quite a lot so he had me briefed on a lot of the golf course before I got here. So I sort of knew what to expect. "In general, it sets things up very well for me and I'm really happy." Kibsgaard Nielsen, who has yet to miss a cut in 2025 on the Ladies European Tour, registered six birdies and one bogey. "It started off a little bit slow," she admitted. "But then I got it going and was able to hit some fairways. "This course is not easy, so I just tried to stay in the moment and take one shot at a time." England's Eleanor Givens recorded six birdies and dropped two shots for a round of 68 to occupy second spot a shot further back, with France's Ariane Klotz and the Dorthea Forbrigd from Norway joint-third on thee under. Order of merit leader Mimi Rhodes stalks the leaders on two under, with the English woman sharing sixth place with 10 of her rivals, after a round of 70 which featured a hole-in-one on the par-three seventh.
