Verstappen would welcome Vettel having a role at Red Bull
SPIELBERG, Austria, June 26 (Reuters) - Max Verstappen said he would welcome fellow four-times Formula One champion Sebastian Vettel back to Red Bull after the German spoke of possibly succeeding consultant Helmut Marko at the team.
Austrian Marko, 82 and a former racer who was blinded in one eye after a stone pierced his visor during the 1972 French Grand Prix in Clermont-Ferrand, has a contract until the end of next year.
Vettel, 37, won consecutive titles with Red Bull from 2010-13 and retired in 2022 after stints at Ferrari and Aston Martin.
"It's more than normal that someone that has achieved so much with Red Bull, has been brought up by Red Bull (should return)," Verstappen told reporters at the Austrian Grand Prix on Thursday when asked for his thoughts.
"In a sense there's always a spot available, right?
"I think also Seb always kept a really good relationship with Helmut anyway, even when he left. I didn't know that of course they were talking but I'm sure that there's always a space for Seb in any kind of form."
Marko was a close confidant of the team's late Austrian owner Dietrich Mateschitz, serving as his trusted representative in the paddock as well as also taking charge of the young driver programme.
During Vettel's era the outspoken advisor was part of a leading trio with principal Christian Horner and technical ace Adrian Newey, who is now at Aston Martin.
"We're in contact about this, though maybe not so intensively or in-depth yet, but it's possible," Vettel told Austria's ORF television recently.
"He's already said a few times that he'd stop, but he's still here, and I wish him all the best so that he stays around for a very long time."
Marko told Austria's Kleine Zeitung on Wednesday that Vettel was following everything very closely.
"The question of succession is also one of the issues," he said.

Lando Norris admits to ‘not the most joyful' talks after Oscar Piastri clash
Lando Norris has admitted that conversations with his McLaren team were 'not the most joyful' after colliding with his team-mate Oscar Piastri and failing to finish the Canadian Grand Prix. Andrea Stella, the team principal, said that 'tough' talks would be had in the days following that race and before arriving here in Austria, after Norris had broken McLaren's most important rule: that their drivers would not make contact with one another. Battling for fourth on the pit straight, four laps from the end of the race this month, Norris drove into the back of his Australian team-mate in a misjudged attempt to find a gap that did not exist. Damage meant the Briton had to retire, while Piastri continued, miraculously unscathed. 'There's been good understanding of everything, realising my thoughts and understanding things from both my side and explaining that to the team,' Norris said. 'But I made it clear from the immediate moment that I misjudged it and I took the fault for it. Of course, not the most joyful conversations, but conversations that needed to be had clearly and obviously from us as a team, because it's not just about myself, it is how we perform as a team and we all know what rule No1 was [to not crash] and [that] continues and will always be. 'In the unfortunate way, but a good way, I think many things have come out stronger than I would say they were prior to the weekend, which you might not expect, but is a good outcome.' French clubs circling but Rangers will hold out for £15m for striker Igamane
RANGERS will hold out for a fee of around £15million for Hamza Igamane, with Lille and Marseille both preparing bids for the Ibrox attacker. The 22-year-old Moroccan forward has been the subject of strong interest from clubs in France after an impressive debut season in Glasgow saw him score 16 goals. Igamane joined Rangers for an initial £1.7m last summer from AS FAR in his homeland after agreeing a five-year deal. But it now looks increasingly likely that Rangers will cash-in after just one season and bank a hefty profit. Lille are understood to have already made contact with Igamane's representatives and thrashed out personal terms, but Rangers are yet to receive a formal bid. The French side are in the market for a new striker to replace Canada international Jonathan David, who is being chased by several top clubs across Europe. They are keen to press ahead with a deal for Igamane and are expected to test the waters with an opening bid over the coming days. Rangers are under no obligation or pressure to sell, but sources have indicated that the Ibrox club will hold firm on their valuation and look for a fee of around £15m for the talented attacker. Whilst they are not against the deal being structured with add-ons and a sell-on fee, Rangers would prefer the bulk of the fee paid up front in order to reinvest it into the playing squad. Despite agreeing personal terms with Igamane's camp, Lille are unlikely to have it all their own way as Marseille have also registered an interest in taking him to France. Cyriel Dessers also remains a target for AEK Athens but the Greek side have thus far fallen a long way short of Rangers' valuation. If Igamane is eventually sold, the financial boost would allow Russell Martin more freedom in his efforts to revamp the squad. It is understood that Dor Turgeman still features highly on a list of potential targets for a new striker, with Maccabi Tel Aviv likely to demand a fee of around £4m plus add-ons. Reports in Israel over recent days have claimed that Turgeman is keen on a move to Ibrox and has already expressed a desire to his current employers that he would like to leave as and when a bid is received.
