ED raids multiple locations in Goa over Rs 1,000 crore land scam
The
Enforcement Directorate
conducted searches at multiple locations in
Goa
in connection with a
land scam
of Rs 1,000 crore allegedly involving fraudulent transfers of high-value land parcels in prime tourist hotspots, a senior official has said. The official said the searches were conducted on Thursday and Friday based on intelligence and subsequent financial investigation, which revealed that
Rohan Harmalkar
is a key mastermind.
Harmalkar and other associates resorted to a large conspiracy to illegally appropriate land belonging to rightful owners through "fraudulent means including impersonation, creation of fake documents, tampering with revenue records, etc, as per an ED statement issued on Friday evening.
Harmalkar had contested the 2022 Goa legislative assembly election as an Independent candidate from the Cumbharjua constituency.
According to ED, these properties, originally owned by individuals and family estates, were unlawfully sold without their consent, causing serious financial and legal distress to such victims.
The operations were carried out under the
Prevention of Money Laundering Act
, 2002 (PMLA).
The searches uncovered incriminating property documents, the current market value of which exceeds Rs 1,000 crores, including forged title deeds, indicating manipulation of land records and fraudulent transfers of high-value land parcels spanning several lakhs of square meters in prime tourist hotspots like Anjuna, Arpora, and Asagoan in Bardez Taluka, the anti-money laundering agency said.
The ED seized original documents of immovable properties worth more than Rs 600 crore during the search action.
The search revealed that the proceeds of crime were further laundered through various individuals and benami entities and finally invested in real estate, luxury vehicles, and other high-value assets.
Further investigation is ongoing to trace the money trail, identify other beneficiaries, and the roles of others, including government officials, connected with the process of illegal property transactions, the ED added.

CM Naidu for incentives to AP families with more kids
Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh, which once amended its laws to bar people with more than two kids from contesting panchayat and municipal elections, now plans to incentivise having larger families as part of a strategy to combat dropping fertility rates and shift focus to what CM N Chandrababu Naidu terms "investment in human capital". Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "I am looking at giving financial incentives by taking a family as a unit. The bigger families may get higher incentives," Naidu told TOI ahead of completing a year in office on June 12. "As part of the 'Zero Poverty P4' initiative, I have already rolled out an interesting model in which wealthier people will adopt poor families. This will not only bridge income disparities, but also ensure welfare of the entire family," he said. The four-time CM, who has been an advocate of population management, said the current demographics in the southern states require govts to revisit their strategies. "Fertility rates in AP need to increase. At the present rate, AP will face serious problems… That is why I am thinking of bigger families," he said. Naidu announced recently that female employees could avail of maternity leave any number of times. "It was limited to two times only. We have removed the restrictions," he said. The state govt also made it mandatory for every organisation to provide childcare centres at workplaces. Naidu announced financial aid of Rs 15,000 for every schoolchild. "We give this money directly to the mothers of students. Apart from this, the NDA govt in AP is planning to announce financial assistance to couples for having more kids." The two-child policy previously applicable to prospective candidates for panchayat and municipal polls has been reversed. Tamil Nadu CM M K Stalin said recently that with the Centre pushing for population-based delimitation of constituencies, there was a need for people in the state to have more children.

Sanatan Dharma and Jainism are pillars of Indian spirituality: Governor Gehlot
Belagavi: Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot on Sunday described Sanatan Dharma and Jainism as foundational pillars of Indian spirituality that teach self-purification, the path of truth and non-violence. He addressed the Bhattarak Sammelan and Jain Community Conference organised by the 1008 Bhattarak Shri Adinath Digambar Jain Samaj Trust at Ainapur in Athani taluk, where he attended as the chief guest. "Such conferences offer an opportunity to reconnect with moral values and religious traditions in today's fast-paced life," the governor said. He urged the Jain community to take collective steps to provide religious education to the younger generation, preserve pilgrimage sites and hold regular spiritual gatherings. Recalling the timeless message of Lord Mahavira — Ahimsa Parmo Dharma and Live and Let Live — governor Gehlot said, "In an era of increasing unrest, these values are more relevant than ever." He also lauded the Jain community's contributions to social welfare through initiatives such as feeding the poor, running gaushalas (cow shelters), supporting the elderly, and establishing educational and healthcare institutions. The seer criticised the Siddaramaiah-led govt for neglecting the community in welfare schemes and urged the creation of a separate development corporation for Jains. He also demanded the announcement of a dedicated pilgrimage scheme for Jain women to visit Sammed Shikharji in Jharkhand. "If the govt continues to ignore us, I am prepared to go to any extent—even sacrificing my life—for the rights of the community," he declared, also calling for the immediate restoration of scholarships for underprivileged Jain students. Gunadharnandi Munimaharaj further objected to the recent caste census figures, stating that the Jain population is grossly underreported. "According to us, the Jain population in Karnataka exceeds 20 lakh, but the survey shows only 1.66 lakh. This is unacceptable and must be rectified," he said. He also criticised the state's decision to slash the annual development fund for the Jain community from Rs 50 crore to Rs 25 crore, calling it unjust and regressive. MLAs Laxman Savadi, Ganesh Hukkeri, Raju Kage and Abhay Patil, Maharashtra MLA Rajendra Yadraonkar; former MLAs Sanjay Patil, Shrimant Patil, and Veerkumar Patil, Jain community president Sunil Patil and Arihant Udyog Samuh president Uttam Patil were present.

Mysuru: Union minister of state for railways V Somanna, on Sunday urged Karnataka govt to reconsider its decision to drop the Chamarajanagar–Hejjala and Mysuru–Kushalnagar railway projects. Following a review meeting with Mysuru division railway officials, Somanna said he wrote to the state urging it to take up both projects and plans to personally follow up with chief minister Siddaramaiah in the next 15 days. He praised chief minister Siddaramaiah for his cooperation in land acquisition matters, which enabled significant railway infrastructure progress in Karnataka. "Karnataka is seeing the implementation of 13 major projects worth around Rs 39,000 crore, including the Rayadurga–Tumakuru, Tumakuru–Davanagere, Kuduchi–Gadag, and Gadag–Wadi lines," he said. "Under the Viksit Bharat initiative, a greenfield corridor is being planned in Tumakuru, which will connect major factories directly via rail.
