Alabama priest accused of having a sexual relationship with teen stripper, paying her thousands in hush money
Robert Sullivan, 61, is on leave as pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Homewood, Alabama, after he was publicly accused of initiating a relationship with Heather Jones, now 33, when she was a vulnerable teenager in 2009.
Jones said in a letter to the Diocese of Birmingham — and shared with The Guardian — that she first met Sullivan while she was dancing at a strip club he frequented.

While tipping her, he offered her $273,000 to sign a non-disclosure agreement in exchange for 'an ongoing relationship that would include financial support in exchange for private companionship,' Jones alleged, telling the Guardian the agreement included sex.
Jones, who was raised in foster care due to her mother's 'severe neglect,' said she 'was hesitant but ultimately agreed due to his persistence and the state [of mind] I was in,' according to her letter to the diocese.

Days later, she received two wire transfers of $136,500 each under the name of an attorney's office, she alleged.
Sullivan, initially posing as a doctor, took her out to shop, eat, drink and stay at hotels in at least six different Alabama cities over the course of the relationship, which lasted until this year, she alleged.

The priest bought her a phone and even paid for her to go to rehab while she suffered from addiction and depression, the accuser claimed.
Between just July 18, 2024 to March of this year, a Venmo account under Jones' name had paid Jones almost $120,000, she told the Guardian.
Jones said she felt compelled to go public with the allegations because Sullivan works so closely with families and their children at his church.

'Others may be vulnerable to the same type of manipulation and exploitation,' she told the paper.
Sullivan has been a priest for more than 32 years and was formerly president of John Carroll High School for six years, according to Al.com.
He announced on Aug. 2 that he was taking personal leave as pastor.
Bishop Steven Raica, head of the Catholic Diocese of Birmingham, addressed the allegations in a letter to the diocese this week, noting that there is not enough evidence for a criminal investigation into Sullivan's conduct.
'While the Alabama Department of Human Resources determined that the allegations did not match the requirements for opening an investigation, a diocese investigation was initiated, again, according to Church law and our diocesan policies and guidelines,' Raica wrote.

New Orleans mayor indicted on federal corruption charges
The New Orleans mayor, LaToya Cantrell, was indicted on Friday on federal corruption charges after spending roughly three years under investigation. The indictment against Cantrell came after the September 2024 indictment of local businessman Randy Farrell, who was charged with exchanging gifts with the mayor so that she would allegedly fire a municipal employee who was investigating Farrell's building inspection company. Among the alleged gifts were tickets to a January 2019 New Orleans Saints football game, which was being played with an appearance at the Super Bowl on the line, a cellphone and lunch at an upscale Ruth's Chris Steak House in the city. Cantrell had also drawn scrutiny for an alleged affair with a now retired New Orleans police officer who had served as her bodyguard. The bodyguard, Jeffrey Vappie, allegedly claimed he was at work while he was actually engaging in 'a personal and romantic relationship' with the mayor. Vappie was charged as a co-defendant in Friday's indictment against Cantrell, full details of which were not immediately available, as Guardian reporting partner WWL Louisiana reported. He had previously been charged with wire fraud and lying to FBI agents in July 2024, shortly after he retired from New Orleans' police force. The allegations called to mind the 2018 scandal that cost the Nashville mayor, Megan Barry, her job and centered on an affair with her bodyguard, Robert Forrest. Prosecutors who had obtained the 2024 charges against Vappie have alleged he researched that case online two years earlier. Both Vappie and Farrell have pleaded not guilty to the charges previously filed against them. By Sam Tobin LONDON (Reuters) -A British councillor was on Friday acquitted of encouraging violent disorder for saying far-right activists should have their throats cut amid riots last year, drawing claims from right-wing politicians of a hypocritical "two-tier" justice system. Ricky Jones made the comments at a counter-protest in London after three girls were murdered in the north English town of Southport and was suspended by the ruling Labour party. Misinformation on social media said the teenager who committed the murders at a Taylor Swift-themed dance event was an Islamist migrant, fuelling days of violent riots including attacks on mosques and hotels housing asylum seekers. Jones, 58, was cleared by a jury following a trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court. He had made the remarks to a crowd gathered near an immigration advice centre in London after reports that far-right supporters were planning a protest. "They are disgusting Nazi fascists ... Disturbing details of clergy abuse at the elite Delbarton school in New Jersey could be made public thanks to a recent court decision — placing the spotlight on a former top church leader who could be the state's next cardinal, The Post has learned. Auxiliary Bishop Elias R. Lorenzo — a potential successor to Newark Cardinal Joseph Tobin, who will reach the mandatory retirement age in May 2027 — served for three decades as a teacher and clergy leader at the all-boys Catholic school in Morristown. During his time, at least 30 students came forward with sexual abuse allegations against Delbarton clergy, the Survivors Network of those Abused By Priests said — some with lurid claims of being brutally abused hundreds of times by Benedictine monks.
