Karooooo's CEO outlines ambitious plans for expansion and profitability

Karooooo, which owns the vehicle tracking and fleet management solutions company Cartrack, has four difficult years behind it and is looking to the new financial year to build growth momentum, said the founder and CEO Zak Calisto.
Interviewed on Thursday at the release of the fourth quarter results to February 28, Calisto, who has expanded the group into Asia, Europe and South Africa, said they scaled up in the last two quarters by nearly 1 000 additional staff, and the company had moved into a new head office in Johannesburg, this after a period where operations were impacted by the Covid pandemic for two years, and by the work-from-home trend.
Karooooo's operating profit increased by 30% to R385 million in the fourth quarter and earnings per share increased 19% to R8.11. The number of Cartrack subscribers increased 17% to 2.3 million from 1.97 million. The group is ungeared with some R900m in cash.
Calisto said their biggest business remains in South Africa, and he believes the market still has 'huge opportunities for growth.' The group is aiming to double the size of its South African business in the next four years, he added.
He said there were similar opportunities in their European and Asia markets, and over time, it was likely that Asia would become the group's biggest market.
'We operate in an expanding and largely underpenetrated market globally, fueled by robust and sustained customer demand. This demand is driven by a heightened focus on digitalization, the need to improve operational efficiency and reduce costs, and increasing attention to safety in physical operations,' he said.

A significant goodwill impairment of R43.9m was realised, whch related to the political uncertainty in Mozambique. Calisto said some of their clients had their entire fleets and properties burned through the political riots. He estimated hundreds of vehicles were burned in total, and there was no certainty at this stage how long the political situation would remain resolved.
He said despite the challenges in the fourth quarter, their Mozambique operation continued to support their South African customers who have cross-border operations and has remained profitable with healthy cash generation.
'In the 2026 financial year, we aim to accelerate Cartrack subscription revenue growth by expanding our distribution footprint in existing markets, driving broader platform adoption and capitalising on growing demand for video solutions,' he said.
He said while their targets might be hard to meet, they had a strong and proven track record of execution, sustained growth at scale, and a highly profitable business model supported by a solid balance sheet and a healthy cash position.
'As we expand our distribution footprint in existing markets, we expect lower earnings per share growth in the 2026 year, given our planned upfront investment in sales and marketing for the year,' the group said.
Cartrack's subscription revenue was forecasted to grow between 16% and 21% compared to the 2025 financial year, while Karooooo's earnings per share was expected to be between R32.50 and R35.50.
Karooooo's adjusted earnings per share increased 39% to R9.48. Operating expenses increased 15% to R485m. Of the total, Cartrack accounted for R459m (Q4 2024: R399m) in operating expenses including investments in infrastructure and headcount to support territorial expansion and distribution growth.

Will Suzuki build cars in SA? Minister Tau engaging with carmakers as tariff debate rages
Donald Trump's automotive tariffs, while only affecting the Mercedes-Benz operations in South Africa, have sparked conversations on whether the government is sufficiently protecting own market. According to Lightstone, around 37% of the vehicles that South Africans purchase are locally produced, while a significant 36% are imported from India and 11% from China. At a media event outlining South Africa's response to Donald Trump's tariffs, held in Pretoria on Tuesday, Minister of Trade and Industry, Parks Tau, revealed some interesting insights into the country's plan for the automotive industry. Asked whether the government was considering raising the import tariffs on Indian and Chinese vehicles in order to prevent our market from being flooded, Tau did not rule out such a move but said the Department of Trade, Industry and Commerce (DTIC) was not in favour of punitive measures. 'With regards to Chinese and Indian auto, it is a discussion that we're currently having with the intention of taking a less punitive approach, but rather taking a more proactive approach of getting some of those products manufactured in the country.' Tau said many Chinese manufacturers had expressed interest in establishing themselves in the country and were making contributions towards a revised Automotive Production and Development Program (APDP), which is currently under review. Tau said he could not comment on what the actual decision would be, regarding tariffs, but added that it was the government's intention to accelerate the policy development process and related instruments in the implementation of the APDP. Discussions with Suzuki Auto Earlier this year Naamsa CEO Mikel Mabasa revealed that at least three Chinese car manufacturers were considering setting up vehicle production facilities in South Africa. Interestingly, the DTIC has also been engaging with Suzuki Auto, which recently became the country's second best-selling brand, thanks largely to an affordable product portfolio sourced almost entirely from its Maruti Suzuki division in India. 'I should say that we spoke about the Chinese, but in the next two weeks, we'll also be engaging with both Japan and India. You would know that Suzuki has a great presence in the country right now, and we will be visiting. 'So whilst it's a Japanese company, they're exporting from India to the South African market. So we'll be touching (base with) both the parent company and the company that's exporting into the South African market to see how we can cooperate and collaborate, on the basis of seeking to attract them as an investor into our country. 'So we're not holding the stick as a starting point. We start with the carrot and then balance it with the stick," Tau concluded.

Waste: The silent giant that could transform our economy

We may not talk about it at the dinner table or in boardrooms, but waste shapes our cities, our businesses, our climate, our budgets and indeed, our future. Each of us generates it. Yet few pause to ask: what could this giant become if we engaged with it differently? Drawing on my work in urban waste diversion and biogas systems - areas in which I have published internationally and applied within South African and African city context - I see waste not as a problem to be buried, but as a resource to be activated. In South Africa, waste generation is rising alongside rapid urbanisation. African landfills are projected to receive nearly 244 million tonnes annually by 2025, much of it organic and methane-rich. This is no small environmental issue; it's a massive missed opportunity. Waste is not neutral. It reflects how we consume, how systems are designed, and how value flows or leaks, across supply chains. So, if you are a business leader evaluating supplier contracts, a CFO reviewing ESG risks, a procurement manager sourcing packaging, or an investor seeking impact, that growth in waste represents both risk and possibility. Waste as a silent giant means it works in the background: default behaviours produce it, and only dramatic disruption brings it to light. But we don't need spectacle, what we need is awareness. Awareness shifts decisions: packaging ambitions, operations, procurement, logistics. It seeds circular economy thinking. Conscious and intentional organisations ask: Can this waste be reused? Resold? Composted? Upcycled? Bioconverted into energy? Through our work and on our podcast titled Not Wasting a Single Story, we interact with and interview informal collectors, policy makers, educators, social entrepreneurs and more. Their lived experiences remind us that what looks like rubbish to one is raw material to another. These stories illuminate systemic gaps and spark imagination in boardrooms and classrooms alike. How we choose to engage with this giant determines whether it remains a silent burden, or a breakthrough.
